University Health Services and the Counseling Center completely denounce the deplorable acts committed in the U.S. capitol on January 6, 2021. These violent, threatening, and racially and culturally intimidating acts are disturbing, and we must not normalize this horrifying behavior. It is not lost on us that the nature of the response to this insurrection compared to law enforcement response to peaceful protests in the past may be triggering for many. We acknowledge the impact on our community and recognize that direct or indirect exposure to such events can be troubling, concerning, or traumatizing and result in many emotional reactions, included but not limited to those of fear, astonishment, frustration, hopelessness, anger, distrust, and distraught.

Counseling Center Resources:

As always, if you are in distress, please know we are here to help. Due to the COVID-related campus closure, URCAD XXV will be held online again this spring. You will be able to view presentations, watch films, see video of dance and music performances, view artwork, and interact with presenters during the asynchronous event.

Last April, 251 students presented their research and creative work, and thousands of visitors logged on the URCAD online via an interactive platform called VoiceThread. Nothing can compare to being together to be able to celebrate all of the research, scholarship, and creative work of our talented UMBC undergraduate students. Experiencing the live dance performances, being able to talk face to face with students about their research, or being able to take a ride on a kinetic sculpture are things that are meant to be experienced in person, and the energy of hosting URCAD on campus is irreplaceable. But last year’s online event provided a unique experience for visitors to explore the presentations and to interact with presenters in really meaningful ways. The online format also expanded URCAD to a global event- visitors logged on from as far away as Korea and the U.K.

Mark your calendars for the week of April 19-23, 2021 for URCAD XXV Online!

You can still view the presentations form 2020 here: https://urcad.umbc.edu/departments/

We will host several workshop to help students prepare their online presentations.

Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits, performances, and film. Over 300 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects. They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated. This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

All current undergraduates who have conducted research, scholarship or creative work in the last year may apply to present their results at URCAD. Mentors, fellow students, friends, family members, high school teachers and students, graduate school recruiters, and the general public are invited to attend.

URCAD 2021 Alumni Keynote Speaker

Klaudine Wakasa

Green Economy Advisor to International Governments

’08 B.S.
After the U.S. Capitol Attack,

 <Tagline>Increased Urgency and Expanded Hope</Tagline>

Dear UMBC Community,

We condemn the attack on the heart of our democracy yesterday. In America, votes, not violence, must determine who will govern. While many expected the 2020 national election would test the strength of our democracy, few of us were prepared for the horrifying images of rioters inside the U.S. Capitol. The reactions of shock, sadness, anger, and fear sweeping through our campus community and so many others across the nation are difficult and make the powerful point that attacks on our democratic values will not be tolerated or normalized.

Our American democracy has withstood many challenges, and its resilience stands as a beacon of hope for many around the world. We are heartened that politically diverse voices across our country are unified in condemning the lawless acts in the U.S. Capitol. We are also encouraged that record numbers of Americans participated in the election and that the vote has now been certified in accordance with the Constitution of the United States. The voice of the people has been heard, and the expected peaceful transition of power on January 20 will ensure continued stability of our democratic process.

We share the concerns expressed by University System of Maryland Chancellor Jay Perman and agree that universities—particularly public universities—have an even more vital role to play in educating and developing engaged citizens.

We approach the spring semester with both increased urgency and expanded hope. In this time of divided politics, the thoughts, words, and actions of the UMBC community continue to inspire us. The campus’s commitment to inclusive excellence and shared governance builds individual and collective capacity for listening to and learning from diverse perspectives—skills that are essential to addressing the disparities and differences our country has avoided for too long.

The Center for Democracy and Civic Life will sponsor several virtual gatherings in the coming weeks that will give community members opportunities to reflect on current events and discuss the issues facing our country.
UPDATE! ALERT! FRAUDULENT JOB SCAM WITH A CHECK

<Tagline>"UMBC Student Job"- With Upfront Check?? DO NOT BE FOOLED</Tagline>

The Career Center works very hard to ensure that job postings in UMBCworks are legitimate positions, however, scammers are becoming more and more creative, especially in these difficult economic times.

If you encounter a position that you fear may be fraudulent, don’t hesitate to reach out to us careers@umbc.edu

Please see the following helpful information to assist you with spotting scams before engaging with them.

● Look at the email domain of the sender (john@gmail vs. john@avalidcompany) Be CAUTIOUS if the domain does not match the domain of the company.

● NEVER provide your credit card, bank account numbers, social security number or other financial documentation.

● BE CAUTIOUS of an employer offering a check before work has commenced and NEVER deposit a check before work has commenced. This is almost always a scam.

● NEVER engage with an employer that requires an initial investment, such as a payment by wire.

● BE CAUTIOUS of an employer whose posting includes many spelling and grammatical errors.

● BE CAUTIOUS of an employer who asks for anything out of the ordinary such as a picture of you or who is not operating by normal hiring procedures, such as hiring you without interviewing you.

● Google the employer’s phone number, fax number and/or email address. If it does not appear connected to an actual business organization, this is a red flag. Better Business Bureau (http://www.bbb.org/us/consumers/), Hoovers (http://www.hoovers.com/) and AT&T’s Anywho (http://www.anywho.com/) can be used to verify organizations.

Scammers often use phishing emails. Some key things to note are:

● The FROM address on an email can easily be spoofed/faked. Just because an email you receive looks like it came from an “@umbc.edu” address or someone you know, does not always mean it actually came from that person.

● Some people may ask, “How does a scammer get my UMBC email address in the first place?” Your email address is not private information. If someone knows your name, they can look up your UMBC email address in the campus directory, or if you have your email address attached to social media or other online accounts and those get hacked, or if someone you know has had

their email hacked, etc. There are many different ways your email address can end up in the hands of a scammer.

● Never click on the links in a phishing message. Just by clicking on the link, you may download a malicious program onto your computer.

If you feel that you have already been scammed, there are important steps you should take.

●If you have already given your personal information, you should follow DoIT's recommendations. You may want to alert the campus police about your particular concerns.

● ***In order to assist the DoIT Security Team's investigation, recipients of the email should send security@umbc.edu a notification including the full header set of the message. These headers are not normally displayed but can be easily accessed. For more instruction on how to send the

full header set of the message, please refer to:

https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=1867970

● If you have already fallen victim to this scam and transferred funds to someone, please file a complaint with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center. They can be reached at the following

web address: Internet Crime Complaint Center

● If you have not wired money to the criminals, please stop communicating with them. You should still report the situation to the campus police and follow DoIT’s instructions. There is no need to report it to the FBI.

Disclaimer

UMBC is not responsible for employers’ representations or guarantees with regard to job postings, nor is it responsible for wages, working conditions, safety, or other work-related issues that may arise after placement with an employer.
