RVAM: Self-Guided Learning Week 1 (Oct 6)

Relationship Violence Awareness Month (RVAM) brings people together to create and generate discussion and skill-building on how to prevent relationship violence in our schools, workplaces, and communities, Since most of our campus remains learning and working remotely, we won’t be able to physically come together this October to do this critical work in person… but it doesn’t mean that learning is cancelled!

The Women’s Center is creating weekly postings to help guide your self-learning that we’ll share with you each week in October. Below is a short list of relevant webinars or events, podcasts or blogs, and on and off-campus resources dedicated to cultivating awareness about relationship violence, posting your skills and knowledge around the intersecting issues, and increasing access to important resources.

While some of the learning content we’re sharing is all-encompassing, we’re also narrowing down on few key themes this year to include: The Covid-Crossings of Relationship Violence, Relationship Violence’s Matrix of Oppression, and Un/Healthy Relationships for Young Adults. Through self-guided learning, you can dig deeper by listening to a podcast, reading a blog, attending a webinar and more.

We’ll also be sharing this content on social media so let us know what you’re learning or what questions you have in the comments!

Extension of modifications of promotion timelines & SEEQs

<Tagline>Tenure track faculty and librarian faculty</Tagline>

Provost’s
extension of modifications of tenure track faculty and librarian faculty
promotion timelines and general use of SEEQs for teaching evaluation

In recognition
of the continuing circumstances we are experiencing, and in an effort to
mitigate some of the impact on our faculty (including librarian faculty), we
are extending the following policy modifications related to the promotion and
tenure process for current tenure-track and librarian faculty for 2021-2022.

Modifications for Tenure Track Assistant
    Professors

Upon request,
all Assistant Professors who have not
yet undergone third-year contract renewal will be granted a one-year
extension for their contract renewal review. Per UMBC’s usual protocol,
Assistant Professors who request this extension and successfully complete their
third-year contract renewaltwill be automatically granted a one-year
extension for their promotion and tenure review.

Upon
    request, all Assistant Professors who
have successfully completed their third-year contract renewal will be
granted a one-year extension for their promotion and tenure review.

Requests
should be submitted to your department chair and will be forwarded via the Dean
to the Provost for final action.

Assistant Professors
who are scheduled for third-year contract renewal, or for promotion and tenure
review, during academic year 2021-22 are asked to submit their request on or before
    April 21, 2021.

Modifications
for Associate Professors hired without tenure

Upon
request, all Associate Professors hired without tenure will be granted a
one-year extension of their scheduled tenure review. Requests should be
submitted to your department chair and will be forwarded via the Dean to the
    Provost for final action.

Modifications
for Librarian I and Librarian II Faculty

Upon request, all Librarian I and Librarian II
faculty who have not yet undergone promotion review, will be granted a one-year extension of their scheduled promotion and
permanent status review. Requests should be submitted to the Director of
the Library and will be forwarded to the Provost for final action.

Modifications Related To The Use of
Spring 2020 Teaching Evaluations in P&T For All Tenure Track, Tenured and
    Full-Time Instructional Faculty

As
a reminder, Spring 2020 SEEQs may not be used for any evaluative purpose for
the P&T review of any tenure-track, tenured or full-time instructional
faculty member (including scheduled third-year contract renewals of pre-tenure
faculty). This includes Assistant Professors being considered for promotion and
tenure to the rank of Associate Professor, Associate Professors undergoing
review for promotion to the rank of Professor, Lecturers undergoing review for
promotion to the rank of Senior Lecturer, and Senior Lecturers undergoing
review for promotion to Principal Lecturer.

In addition, Spring 2020 SEEQs may not be included
in P&T dossiers or used in any aspect of such promotion reviews now or in
the future. The Provost will issue instructions to all relevant P&T review
bodies consistent with this policy modification. Faculty may wish to choose to
    reflect upon their Spring 2020 teaching experiences in their self-assessment;
however, the absence of such reflection may not be considered a negative
    indicator of faculty performance.

Intern of the Week: Samuel Bailor for Computer Science!

I created two Python applications including GUI and backend, as well as several Excel macros. All the software that I created was aimed at improving productivity by providing colleagues with automation. I created multiple programs that searched through documents, databases, and excel spreadsheets to present the user with the data that was most meaningful to them. I had to research new data science and GUI libraries, conduct meetings with the intended users, and create code that could be developed by others when I was gone.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

When I felt like I was ready to apply for internships in my sophomore year of college, I was set on applying to as many companies as it took. I had seen UMBCworks mentioned in some emails and figured I might as well get access to it. To get access to UMBCworks I had to get my resume approved by the career center, so I set up an appointment and brought in my resume. The resume approval appointment actually completely changed my resume for the better. The staff member I met with, Jennifer Heilman, pointed out all of the weak points and suggested how to improve it! After approval, I began applying to positions in UMBCworks as well as attending the Spring 2019 career fair. The interactions I had at that career fair brought me to a point where I received two offers, one from General Dynamics Information Technology and one with Leidos. To prepare for both interviews, I used software suggested by the Career Center, Big Interview. This interview preparation course was extremely helpful and I got offers for both positions. I ended up accepting the Leidos position and sticking around with the company for two internships!

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

Seeing how the work I do in my major can be applied to the industry, as well as learning new things from the industry that simply can't be taught in school.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

The multitude of automation software that I created for Leidos saved my colleagues many hours of manual searching and processing, making their lives easier and making the company more profitable.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

First, you should build a strong academic foundation that can be translated into a great resume. UMBC is a tough school and if you do well, recruiters will notice you. You must also believe in yourself and really force yourself to do what you need to do to reach your goal. I applied to over 30 internship positions and only got interviews for two, but that's how I started my career!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
