The dashboard provides timely data about the prevalence of COVID-19 within our main campus, based on UMBC’s on-campus testing and reported results from off-campus testing among UMBC faculty, staff, and students who are approved to be on campus this fall. </li></ul></div><h4>Limited Dine-In Option Now Available at True Grit’s</h4><div><ul><li>Starting October 1, a <a href="https://dineoncampus.com/UMBC" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">limited dine-in option will be available at True Grit’s dining hall</a> for community members approved to be on campus this fall. Please keep these safety measures in mind as we begin this process: </li><ul><li>Please do not move tables or chairs. </li><li>Please be mindful of your time spent in the dining hall since others may be waiting for a seat. </li><li>Masks are required unless you are actively eating. </li><li>Each table will have stickers with guidelines on how many guests are allowed at the table.</li><li>Each table will have a seating card with a red "Do Not Sit" side; guests will need to turn these seating cards when they leave to alert our associates that the table needs to be sanitized.</li></ul></ul></div><div>Thank you for your cooperation as we work to keep our campus community safe.</div><div><br></div><h4>UMBC Together</h4><div><ul><li>Visit the <a href="https://www.umbc.edu/together/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Together website</a> for recent social media posts and the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/umbctogether" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Together myUMBC group</a> for information on upcoming events.</li></ul></div></div>

  <Title>2019-20 Hrabowski Innovation Fund Award Winners</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><table border="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td><table border="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td><table border="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td><div><div><span>UMBC is proud to announce the projects selected to receive grants in the 2019-2020 rounds of the <em>Hrabowski Fund for Innovation</em> competition.</span></div><div><span><strong>IMPLEMENTATION &amp; RESEARCH AWARD (Spring 2020)</strong></span></div><div><span><strong>Enhancing Student Engagement in Internationalization at Home: Towards Inclusiveness and Intercultural Dialogue</strong> — A multidisciplinary team led by Irina Golubeva (Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication) will develop the intercultural communication skills of undergraduate and graduate students in order to foster intercultural dialogues on campus and to enhance their preparedness for working in a culturally diverse world. The team will conduct a campus-wide needs analysis survey with a focus on campus climate; design and develop innovative online intercultural training curriculum; pilot the training; and measure the results with the Intercultural Development Inventory assessment tool. This initiative will support UMBC’s institutional strategic plan of internationalization, with a special focus on internationalization at home. This project will offer an intercultural learning opportunity to all students regardless of whether they set foot outside of the United States, and is designed to specifically address the intercultural communication needs of our diverse campus community in alignment with other existing initiatives that celebrate cultural diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.</span></div><div><span><strong>ADAPTATION AWARDS (Spring 2020)</strong></span></div><div><span><strong>Synchronous IRL/DL Technologies for Innovative Teaching</strong> — A team led by Diane Alonso, Eileen O’Brien, and Anne Brodsky (Psychology) will investigate innovative options to reach all students by connecting campuses via technology to create a dynamic hands-on experience at both the main UMBC and Universities at Shady Grove (USG) campuses. The Psychology Department has limited resources, two campuses, and multiple external settings (e.g., the Kennedy Krieger Institute) to cover, and a large number of students required to take their courses. The team planned to offer PSYC 335 in Summer 2020 as a cross-campus, two section course at USG and the main UMBC campus with WebEx providing the technological link for this class, which was taught by a faculty member and a TA using active learning. They aim to create a remote shared classroom and meeting room for use in providing better access and technological support than the traditional lecture classrooms that could also be used for remote meetings, interviews, community collaboration, and to help better incorporate the USG and Kennedy Krieger faculty.</span></div><div><span><strong>The Accelerated Math 106 Program</strong> — A multidisciplinary team led by William LaCourse and Beatrice Lauman (College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences) will provide supplemental support for Math 106: Algebra and Elementary Functions students through intensive instruction and practice in key algebra concepts and topics. The Accelerated Math 106 Program (AMP) will provide students in Math 106 who score below a 40 percent on a pre-assessment with an additional research-based opportunity to learn Math 106 content through a six-week supplemental session. The supplemental session will use undergraduate learning assistants to support problem solving activities and group work and to provide peer mentoring. AMP will be based on the hypotheses that effectively learning algebra involves identifying misconceptions, learning the correct conceptual underpinnings, and doing extensive problem solving followed by reflection. The effects of the program will be assessed by comparing participants’ and non-participants’ content knowledge and attitudes toward mathematics learning, as well as the participants’ beliefs about the impact of the learning assistants.</span></div><div><span><strong>Metacognitive Media Literacy: Modules Supporting Self-Regulated Learners in MCS 101</strong> — A team led by Donald Snyder (Media and Communication Studies) will create a series of modules for the introductory MCS 101: Media Literacy course modeled after those created in Jean A. Cardinale and Bethany C. Johnson’s “Metacognition Modules: A Scaffolded Series of Online Assignments Designed to Improve Students’ Study Skills.” The team will create content and assignments for the modules focused on providing students with resources to increase their ability to self-regulate and develop metacognitive skills. The team anticipates that this intervention will produce a measurable impact on students’ ability to work independently, to critically reflect on their own learning processes, and to articulate these gains in written and oral form.</span></div><div><span><strong><span>SEED AWARD (Spring 2020)</span></strong></span></div><div><span><strong>Evaluation and Enhancement of a Learning Unit on Quantum Algorithms</strong> — A multidisciplinary team led by Alan Sherman (Computer Science and Electrical Engineering) will assess and enhance materials for a two-week learning unit for quantum algorithms created by Sherman which is being field tested in CMSC 641: Design &amp; Analysis of Algorithms. This unit introduces the new transformative paradigm of quantum algorithms, which offers tremendous potential for solving important complex problems. This project will make this learning unit, including its six videos and other materials, freely available after they are revised and enhanced based on reviews by three experts.</span></div><div><span><strong>IMPLEMENTATION &amp; RESEARCH AWARD (Fall 2019)</strong></span></div><div><span><strong>Learning Teaching as an Interpretive Process in Urban Schools </strong>— A multidisciplinary team led by Kindel Nash (Education) will conduct a qualitative investigation of the Learning Teaching as an Interpretive Process (LTIP) framework’s impact on the learning outcomes of teacher candidates who are in the Sherman Scholars Program. This framework is designed to prepare teachers to adequately support the learning of students from culturally and linguistically diverse groups, who often attend urban schools. The proposed project will impact Sherman Scholars’ abilities to navigate the complexities of teaching during their education programs and as they enter the teaching profession.</span></div><div><span><strong>SEED AWARD (Fall 2019)</strong></span></div><div><span><strong>Climate Change and Society: Global Change in the Context of Maryland</strong> — A team led by Dawn Biehler (Geography and Environmental Systems) will institute a course, Climate Change and Society, accessible to all UMBC students, which will develop students’ knowledge of the causes, effects, inequities, and responses of climate change, and heighten their confidence in communicating with others about it. The team will begin by teaching an incubator course focused on climate change issues in Maryland which will cover content, feature expert guest speakers, and consist of team research to produce components of a Maryland Atlas of Climate Change. The team will analyze the results of the assessment, update course materials, and modify and develop new course modules for a larger class at a lower level for a future semester.</span></div><div><span>Proposals for the next round of Innovation Fund grants are due by <strong>October 30, 2020</strong>.   <Title>Looking in the Mirror</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span>Dear UMBC Community,<br></span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Two years ago, a lawsuit alleging UMBC mishandled several sexual assault complaints focused campus attention on our community’s culture and processes related to sexual assault prevention and response. Administrative and shared governance leaders, faculty, staff, and students joined together in the <strong>Retriever Courage</strong> initiative to better understand implementation of the <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/vqmkff/jdozdbc/734gv2" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Sexual Misconduct Policy</a> and hold ourselves accountable to our value of inclusive excellence. This deep look in the mirror strengthened the campus in important ways, leading to the creation of our new <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/vqmkff/jdozdbc/nw5gv2" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Office of Equity and Inclusion</a>, establishment of an <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/vqmkff/jdozdbc/3o6gv2" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Inclusion Council</a> charged to support all members of the community affected by discrimination, and enhanced Title IX training required for all students, faculty, and staff.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Yesterday, we learned that the civil lawsuit filed against UMBC and individual defendants at the university has been dismissed by U.S. District Court Judge Deborah Chasanow, who ruled that UMBC fulfilled its obligations under all aspects of the law.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>In all matters of equity and inclusion, compliance with the law is essential but certainly not sufficient. We are proud of the thoughtful and transparent approach our campus community is continuing to take to more fully understand the issue of sexual assault prevention and response. We deeply appreciate the many shared governance leaders, students, and colleagues who devote their time and expertise not only to the <strong><a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/vqmkff/jdozdbc/jh7gv2" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Retriever Courage</a></strong> work, but also to other urgent equity issues, including anti-racism and support for the LGBTQ, religious, immigrant, and international communities.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>We are stronger as a campus because of this work, and we know that each of us has an important role to play as the work continues. October is Relationship Violence Awareness Month, and we encourage you to view the Women’s Center’s <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/vqmkff/jdozdbc/z97gv2" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">programs and resources</a>.     <Title>October is LGBTQ+ History Month!</Title>
    <Tagline>Recognizing the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community</Tagline>

          <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>LGBTQ+ History Month originated in the United States, and was first celebrated in 1994. This month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer history celebrates role models, and the history of the LGBTQ+ rights and related civil rights movements. In the United States, it is celebrated in October to coincide with <a href="https://nationaltoday.com/national-coming-out-day/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Coming Out Day </a>on October 11. However, countries recognize this month at different times of the year according to their specific significant events (e.g. United Kingdom recognizes this in February)</span></p><p><span>It was founded by Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson. Many gay and lesbian organizations supported the concept early on as did Governors William Weld of Massachusetts and Lowell Weicker of Connecticut, who recognized the inaugural month with official proclamations. In 1995, the National Education Association indicated support of LGBTQ+ History Month as well as other history months by resolution at its General Assembly.</span></p><p><span><em><strong>So why do we have Pride Month in June and LGBTQ+ History Month in October?</strong></em></span></p><p><span>Wilson chose October as the month for the celebration due to National Coming Out Day. It was established as a widely known event, on October 11, the date of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights that took place in 1987. While providing support and care to survivors of relationship violence is an everyday action, this awareness month also carves out intentional moments to honor and believe survivors’ stories and experiences. As we continue this work throughout the pandemic, it is also critical for us to consider how the intersections of covid-19 and social isolation have exacerbated relationship violence over the past several months.  </div><div><br></div><div>Since most of campus remains learning and working remotely, we won’t be able to physically come together this October to do this critical work in person. The Women’s Center and all of our campus partners including the Office of Equity and Inclusion, University Health Services, the Counseling Center, <a href="https://conduct.umbc.edu/programs/what-is-green-dot/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Green Dot,</a> We Believe You, and Retriever Courage, and more will nonetheless continue to promote awareness and prevention this month. </div><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><strong><em>We are inviting our UMBC community to join our efforts.</em></strong></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Get Involved:</strong></div><div><br></div><div><strong><u>Learn</u></strong> - Throughout the month of October, the Women’s Center will be focusing on various topics and issues related to relationship violence awareness and prevention. While providing support and care to survivors of relationship violence is an everyday action, this awareness month also carves out intentional moments to honor and believe survivors’ stories and experiences. As we continue this work throughout the pandemic, it is also critical for us to consider how the intersections of covid-19 and social isolation have exacerbated relationship violence over the past several months.  </div><div><br></div><div>Since most of campus remains learning and working remotely, we won’t be able to physically come together this October to do this critical work in person. The Women’s Center and all of our campus partners including the Office of Equity and Inclusion, University Health Services, the Counseling Center, <a href="https://conduct.umbc.edu/programs/what-is-green-dot/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Green Dot,</a> We Believe You, and Retriever Courage, and more will nonetheless continue to promote awareness and prevention this month. </div><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><strong><em>We are inviting our UMBC community to join our efforts.</em></strong></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Get Involved:</strong></div><div><br></div><div><strong><u>Learn</u></strong> - Throughout the month of October, the Women’s Center will be focusing on various topics and issues related to relationship violence awareness and prevention. Key themes we will be exploring include: <em>The Covid-Crossings of Relationship Violence, Relationship Violence’s Matrix of Oppression, and Un/Healthy Relationships for Young Adults. </em></div><div>We’ll be sharing weekly postings to help guide your self-learning that will include relevant webinars or events, podcasts or blogs, and on and off-campus resources. The stories, the poems, and images are timeless and are relevant today as they were in April. Please help us bear witness to the experiences of survivors by reading <em><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/womenscenter/posts/92679" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Survivors to the Front: A Call to Witness. </a></em>We will also reshare images from our virtual Clothesline Project and post images from past<a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/womenscenter/files/4591" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Clothesline Project </a>displays hosted on campus. </div><div><br></div><div><strong><u>Come Together </u></strong>- The <em>We Believe You discussion group</em> meets weekly on Wednesdays at 4pm.   <Title>October is Relationship Violence Awareness Month</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Relationship Violence Awareness Month (RVAM) brings people together to create and generate discussion and skill-building on how to prevent relationship violence in our schools, workplaces, and communities. While providing support and care to survivors of relationship violence is an everyday action, this awareness month also carves out intentional moments to honor and believe survivors’ stories and experiences. As we continue this work throughout the pandemic, it is also critical for us to consider how the intersections of covid-19 and social isolation have exacerbated relationship violence over the past several months.  </div><div><br></div><div>Since most of campus remains learning and working remotely, we won’t be able to physically come together this October to do this critical work in person. The Women’s Center and all of our campus partners including the Office of Equity and Inclusion, University Health Services, the Counseling Center, <a href="https://conduct.umbc.edu/programs/what-is-green-dot/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Green Dot,</a> We Believe You, and Retriever Courage, and more will nonetheless continue to promote awareness and prevention this month. </div><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><strong><em>We are inviting our UMBC community to join our efforts.</em></strong></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Get Involved:</strong></div><div><br></div><div><strong><u>Learn</u></strong> - Throughout the month of October, the Women’s Center will be focusing on various topics and issues related to relationship violence awareness and prevention. Key themes we will be exploring include: <em>The Covid-Crossings of Relationship Violence, Relationship Violence’s Matrix of Oppression, and Un/Healthy Relationships for Young Adults. </em></div><div>We’ll be sharing weekly postings to help guide your self-learning that will include relevant webinars or events, podcasts or blogs, and on and off-campus resources. Leave us comments or ask questions. </div><div><br></div><div><em><strong>Learning Reminder!</strong> </em></div><div><em>All undergraduate and graduate students are required to complete mandatory annual student training that addresses UMBC's policies around sexual and gender based violence from the Office of Equity and Inclusion by November 1st!</em></div><div><br></div><div><strong><u>Witness </u></strong>- Last April, the Women’s Center in partnership with survivors created a zine in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The stories, the poems, and images are timeless and are relevant today as they were in April. Please help us bear witness to the experiences of survivors by reading <em><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/womenscenter/posts/92679" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Survivors to the Front: A Call to Witness. </a></em>We will also reshare images from our virtual Clothesline Project and post images from past<a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/womenscenter/files/4591" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Clothesline Project </a>displays hosted on campus. </div><div><br></div><div><strong><u>Come Together </u></strong>- The <em>We Believe You discussion group</em> meets weekly on Wednesdays at 4pm. Survivors of power-based violence are welcomed to join this<a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/womenscenter/events/84765" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> virtual community </a>hosted by the Women’s Center with support from the We Believe You student org.
