COVID-19 Health & Safety

  • UMBC’s Public Health Dashboard provides timely data about the prevalence of COVID-19 within our main campus, based on UMBC’s on-campus testing and reported results from off-campus testing among UMBC faculty, staff, and students who are approved to be on campus this fall. UMBC’s current positivity rate is 0.7%.

New Service-Learning Opportunity: Apply for the Reach Together Program

  • Students: UMBC’s Sherman STEM Teacher Scholars Program, in collaboration with The Shriver Center, is seeking applicants for the Reach Together Program. This new program engages UMBC students in mentoring and tutoring Baltimore City youth. Applicants should be in their second year at UMBC or beyond. Mentor-tutors will each provide targeted math tutoring for five students through an eight-week program (September 28 – November 20) with a week of training starting on September 21. Submit your application as soon as possible through this Google form and schedule a 15-minute interview between now and September 18.

Dear Colleagues,

We have faced many challenges as a community through the spring and summer, working together to support both academic continuity and campus health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please know that you have our deepest gratitude for the hard work and commitment you have shown in preparing for a fall semester like no other.

While state officials and University System of Maryland leaders appropriately focused first on public health, Maryland and its public higher education institutions must also now respond to the severe impact of the pandemic on both the state’s economy and university finances. USM Chancellor Jay Perman announced Wednesday the need for campuses to take a number of budget actions to close a significant FY 2021 budget gap.

Like other USM campuses, UMBC finds virtually all of our revenue sources under pressure, and we anticipate a nearly $65 million, or 13 percent, decrease from the budget originally projected for this fiscal year. 

The State has cut the USM base budget appropriation by $117 million, which has been passed on to all the institutions. UMBC’s share of this reduction is $11.8 million.
While this is one of the most challenging fiscal environments our campus has faced, we are firm in our commitment to our guiding principles of supporting the people who are part of the UMBC community and protecting the academic program. Our strategy is to avoid layoffs, if at all possible, and we have conferred with shared governance leaders about a financial path forward through these very difficult times.

Our revised FY 2021 budget process takes the following steps:
Finally, knowing that nearly 70 percent of the University operating budget is for personnel costs, we have necessarily had to turn to strategies to reduce those expenditures as well, including the following steps:
While these circumstances are serious and unfortunate, we know our UMBC community will navigate through successfully by continuing to work together. Maya Mueller, who graduated in August, 2020 and was a URA scholar, presented a poster at the 41st Annual Conference of the International Society for Clinical Biostatistics organized virtually in Krakow, Poland (https://iscb2020.info/).

The title of the poster was "Application of an SEIRD model to track the spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria".

 

 

 

Maya's poster was selected as one of the top 3 presentations at the conference!

 

As a URA Scholar, Maya conducted undergraduate research mentored by Dr. Bedrich Sousedik, "Comparing Predictive Data Assimilation Methods on S-I-R Epidemic Forecasts”.  

Maya is currently an assistant researcher for Drexel under Dr. Simi Hoque on applying an Integrated Urban Metabolism Analysis Tool (https://nextcity.org/daily/entry/math-tool-big-data-planning-solution).

The Multicultural Leadership Experience (MLE) is a collaboration between Campus Life and the Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging. The purpose of MLE is to provide a space for students and student leaders who identify with culturally, racially and ethnically diverse or marginalized backgrounds to discover their own capacity to lead, while also promoting a better understanding of their experiences, challenges, and outcomes in navigating their own collegiate careers.
 
The MLE Mini-Series will include three different sessions that you are welcome to register for. You have the option to register for one, some, or all of the sessions being offered. Each session will provide participants with:
  • connections to campus and resources
  • meaning-making through reflection and group discussions
  • leadership learning through the lens of multiculturalism, diversity and inclusion 
  • opportunities to engage with other students across different areas of campus involvement 

The following are the sessions that are being offered for the fall 2020 term:

Session #1 - Who Do You Think You Are? 
Tuesday, Sep. 22 @ 3pm - 4pm
This session focuses on self-awareness and identity development. Participants will connect their understanding of themselves to their leadership approach.

Session #2 - Building Inclusive Communities
Wednesday, Oct. 14 @ 12pm - 1pm
This session focuses on otherness and inclusivity. Participants will connect their values and beliefs to their approach with relationships, building teams, and fostering a sense of belonging. 

Session #3 - Breaking Barriers & Taking Action
Thursday, Nov. 12 @ 6pm - 7pm
This session focuses on context, socialization, and creating change. Participants will connect the Social Change wheel to their approach in creating the positive impact they wish to see, while also identifying systems or barriers in place that may need to be challenged. 


To participate in the MLE Mini-Series, you must select the session(s) you wish to attend. Once registered, you will be expected to attend the session(s) you signed up for. Did you know that every student at UMBC has an assigned academic advisor?

For most students, this will be a professor in your academic major department. Others will work with a professional (full-time) advisor, at least until they have reached their junior year or selected a major (in the case of our office who work with undecided/exploratory students).

Something a bit unique to UMBC is that all students are required to meet with their advisor at least once a semester, prior to registration.

But let’s back up a bit. What exactly is academic advising?

An academic advisor’s role is to assist you in planning your academic career at UMBC. You can talk to your advisor about:

As you may surmise from this list, your advisor is a vital member of your academic support team and someone we recommend you connect with regularly, beyond the required mid-semester check in, to take full advantage of this support.

So how do you find out who your advisor is? Easy.

Below is a link to the department contacts for all majors. The person listed as “advising coordinator” or “advising contact” can help you find out who your advisor is, or assign you an advisor. 

In preparation for an advising appointment, it’s helpful to review your degree card on your myUMBC Profile. Here you can:

  • Develop and update your degree plan
  • Check your degree progress
  • See how coursework transferred over from your previous institution
  • Access suggested four-year pathways for completing your degree program 

Additionally, you will want to develop a list of questions/topics to discuss with your advisor in order to give the meeting some structure. 

In terms of spring advising and registration (I know, we just started the fall semester, but time flies!), the schedule of classes will be available on Monday, October 26th. You can review the course offerings and discuss them with your academic advisor when you meet.   

Be ready to discuss any outstanding items or questions you might have from previous advising meetings. We also recommend that you take notes (your advisor will as well and you have the ability to access these notes in your Advising History on myUMBC)!

Spring 2020 registration begins Tuesday, November 3. Your exact registration date depends on the total amount of credits earned. Information regarding your exact registration time will be available in early October.
