Hello! We are Chew-MBC, the cooking club here at UMBC. Cooks of any skill level are welcome. Normally, we meet weekly in the kitchens on campus to cook dishes suggested by our members. Our club is focused on the connections food brings, whether between neighbors or people on different continents; we’ve done collabs with the Filipino Student Association, the Anime Society, and the hot beverage club among others because we value meeting people with diverse perspectives and interests. There are no fees required to join, and we’d be glad to welcome anybody who wants to share experiences, broaden their knowledge of food, and be a part of a community.

Ouriel Ndalamba is a Sophomore Chemical Engineering major. She is a CWIT Scholar, member of the Honors College, a summer LSAMP participant, and a URA Scholar.

Title of your research project: 
Dissolved carbon dioxide flotation for nutrient extraction and recovery from poultry litter.

Describe your project: 
Land application of poultry litter and other agricultural wastes by farmers causes nutrient runoff into water bodies and creates dead zones, which negatively impact water quality and aquatic life. My research aims to develop a new technology to effectively remove and recover the nutrients in poultry litter and agricultural waste to not only protect the environment, but also generate valuable fertilizers and soil amendments that can be sold to offset operating costs.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project? 
My mentors are Dr. Lee Blaney and Michael Fleming in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering (CBEE). I was introduced to Dr. Blaney by Dr. Miller and Dr. Wagner as I expressed an interest in engineering after I graduated high school. In the lab, I work alongside Michael Fleming, a graduate student. I asked Dr. Blaney to mentor me for this project, because I am interested in solving water pollution problems. 

How did you become interested in this project? 
I became interested in this project after learning more about different types of water pollution and, in particular, how nutrients were dangerous to the aquatic life of many rivers in the US and other parts of the world. The recycling aspect of the project, namely turning a waste source like poultry litter into a high-quality fertilizer, also fascinated me.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher? 
The most unexpected thing about being a researcher was understanding that the answer to one question just leads to more questions.  Every day of working in the lab (or reading the literature) brings me motivation to seek more understanding about my research project, allowing my work to progress and evolve.

What has been the most rewarding part? 
The most rewarding part has been seeing how much I can learn from working in the lab and using that knowledge to help people and the planet.

How will you disseminate your research (URCAD presentation, conference, publication, etc?) 
I will present my research at URCAD next April!

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research? 
Do not be afraid of trying new experiences, even if you do not feel ready. You can learn if you put in the work and time.

What are your professional goals? 
My goal is to go to graduate school.

Business Continuity and Staff Support

  • Effective immediately, Contingent I positions will no longer require hiring exception approval. Both new and renewal contracts may be submitted following standard procedures. Information about the hiring freeze and hiring exception process is available through Human Resources.
  • Phase 2 of the Return to On-Campus Work plan will begin on August 3. Most employees will continue to work remotely; some will be needed on campus. Whether working remotely or on campus, employees might face childcare and/or family care challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Supervisors and department heads are asked to make every effort to be flexible in accommodating the needs of their employees. Supportive measures, resources, and leave options may include the following:
    • Frequent well-being check-ins
    • Temporary modified work schedules
    • Leave under Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA)
      • Emergency Family Medical Leave (EFML)
      • Emergency Paid Sick Leave (EPSL)
    • Consideration of on-campus childcare (Y Preschool)
  • If employees test positive for COVID-19 or have reason to self-isolate, they may be eligible for Emergency Paid Sick Leave. Please contact HR for more details.

Campus Access

  • UMBC’s buildings are secured, with some employees and research teams on campus and taking appropriate health and safety precautions. Only employees with permission from their supervisor, approved researchers, and/or approved students should be on campus.
  • Faculty Summer Access Requests: If you need to access the campus to prepare course materials for a class that you are teaching this fall, or access to your office to teach online during the summer, please submit a Summer 2020 Campus Access Request Form.
  • Faculty Fall Access Survey: Please respond to this quick Fall 2020 Faculty Office Access Interest Survey by July 28.
  • If you have a one-time emergency need to visit campus and have gained appropriate approval(s) but do not have keys to gain access to the building/office that you need to visit, please call UMBC Police Deputy Chief Bruce Perry at (443) 677-2195 or Lieutenant Derrick Johns at (410) 207-0850.

For Challenge Day 2 we will focus on seeking feedback. Surrounding yourself with peers and mentors who are willing to give you honest feedback will significantly impact your ability to be self-aware and enhance your self-understanding. We all have blind spots, and others are likely to identify things we normally don’t see in ourselves.

In this challenge we will be doing an activity that will help you gain feedback from your friends and family. Your challenge is to complete an online self-assessment based on the Johari Window, a psychological instrument used to demonstrate your knowledge of yourself in comparison to how others perceive you.

Here are the steps:

2. Email your unique link to a few friends and family. Ask them to complete the assessment about you. Tell them to be honest because this feedback will help you grow and giving helpful, constructive feedback is a sign of love for another person.

Retrievers!! We want YOU to take on the Online Leadership Challenge, which starts TODAY! Navigate the different paths to leadership, practice articulating your journey as a leader, and engage in meaningful discussions with other UMBC students. 

Challenge questions will be posted on the Campus Life Instagram (@umbccampuslife) and myUMBC page every Tuesday and Thursday until August 13th. The student who accumulates the most points throughout the challenge will receive a $50 UMBC Bookstore gift card! The Online Leadership Challenge is dedicated to helping students reflect on the intersection of academics, personal experiences & campus involvement to answer the question: What is a leader? And what does leadership look like?

Stop for a minute and reflect on your life leading up to this point. You probably noted moments of great achievement, overcoming obstacles, as well as lessons learned. I’m willing to bet that you’ve even grown and developed in many ways in the last three years alone! 

At UMBC we believe leadership is a process of knowing yourself, what you contribute, and how you can best work with others to make a change in your community. The leadership learning process is about inner work and self-development just as much as it is about learning how to work with others. A pivotal tool for continual and ongoing self-development is: reflection. Far too often we are busy or dwell on situations rather than seek to learn from them. When you take the time to reflect on your actions, behaviors, thoughts and feelings you give yourself the opportunity to enhance your self-understanding and further propel your own personal development.
