Stress is a part of everyday life. However, there are certain situations that can cause stress specifically for college students.
The first year of college brings the stress of something new.
For returning students, there could be the stress of taking more challenging classes in their major and finding the perfect internship,
Some students are managing classes and work while being active in one of UMBC’s many campus organizations.
Outside of college life, sources of stress can come from family and world events, such as natural disasters or the political climate.
Right now, COVID-19 has an impact on our everyday life, as well as academics and work.
But not all stress is bad.
A healthy level of stress can serve as a motivator.
Positive stress, called eustress, can help you focus and improve your performance on activities such as tests, playing sports, or interviewing for a job.
Stress can turn into a major problem if it is not managed properly. It can have serious consequences on your school performance, body, and mind.
Difficulty concentrating
Increased worrying
Trouble completing assignments on time
Not going to class
Short temper or increased agitation
So what can we do about stress?
One useful method in managing stress is Mindfulness.
Mindfulness is the practice of being fully aware of where you are and what you are doing.
If you have never tried mindfulness, the best way to start is by incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine.
Activities such as walking, eating, or breathing can be done mindfully. Here is a 7-minute mindful practice that can help you to reduce stress.
The Counseling Center is offering virtual 30-minute mindfulness practices Monday – Friday, 12 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., beginning April 22. Check out their myUMBC group for updates and to access the Webex link.

]]>Caleb Cagle (he/him/his), is a Junior Information Systems major here at UMBC. Caleb’s favorite colors are blue and forest/emerald green and he loves healthy foods like granola bars, fresh fruit and vegetables but is always down for some candy. Caleb believes that leadership is setting the example and maintaining integrity both of yourself and your communities. Doing what is "right" even if it goes against the rules. His goals as a Leadership Peer Facilitator (LPF) are to really branch out and be really active within UMBC as a whole. He was recently hired to be apart of the election board of SGA but also would like to get involved with SEB, join more clubs and discover more about other cultures as well as aspects of myself that I may have overlooked. Outside of being a LPF, Caleb works two jobs, plays soccer, and is a member of the Hispanic Culture Club, ChewMBC, Sailing Team and an IHU peer facilitator. For those with degrees in science or math, teaching might be a next step. Through the WW Teaching Fellowship, they can receive a $32,000 stipend, discounted tuition, and mentoring.
A few spots are still open at West Chester University, one of our partner universities, where WW Teaching Fellows complete a clinically based preparation program for STEM teachers that leads to a master’s degree. The program focuses on preparing teachers for success in high-need middle or high schools in the School District of Philadelphia.

Abstract:
Goop! is a fun thirty-second looping exploration of beats, shapes, and colors. The objective of this piece was to capture everything I thought made animation fun to watch: bright and deliberate color palettes, fluid movement, and visual rhythm. I’ve always found pieces of animation paired with music to be incredibly satisfying to watch when done right, and I wanted to try making one myself in the limited amount of time that I had. By creating a looping piece, I’ve made it easier for me to enjoy those key moments where the animation and the music match up perfectly. Not having a theme gave me the freedom to work intuitively and spontaneously with the music, which was chosen before starting the animation so I could carefully plan the visuals. I chose and edited a song titled “Cute Monsters” by Hani Koi because I thought it best complimented my vision of what I wanted my piece to look and sound like. Each frame was drawn by hand in Photoshop, and the limited color palettes were chosen with creating a specific visual effect in mind. Each palette had two “transition” colors that allowed it to connect with the palettes before and after.
