Virtual Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Honoring + Believing Survivors’ Stories (Week 3) Round-Up

In the absence of physical space to learn, create, and come together, the Women’s Center is taking Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) 2020 online. Each week during April, we will focus on a specific topic/theme as it relates to sexual violence awareness and prevention (see image below). Together, via out social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, we can watch videos, read articles, and engage in other content for learning and skill-building.

UMBC’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month online calendar includes weekly themes to help explore important concepts related to sexual violence awareness and prevention.

Were you taking a break from social media last week? That’s great! But it doesn’t mean you have to miss anything. In addition to posting on social media throughout the month, at the end of each week, we’ll provide a round-up of all the content we shared along with some action items to consider doing.

We just wrapped up week three of SAAM and spent the last several days discussing the importance of believing and honoring survivors stories through the following content:

1. Have you heard of the Clothesline Project? Every year students, faculty, and staff make t-shirts describing their experience with relationship violence and sexual assault. Typically these t-shirts would be hung shoulder-to-shoulder on a clothesline for public viewing, as if the survivors are there themselves, telling us their stories. The Clothesline Project gives voice to the experiences of survivors, victims, family, and friends who have been affected by violence. This year, we are creating a virtual Clothesline Project as a way of continuing to honor survivors stories. Submissions can be found on our social media.

2. Take Back The Night

Take Back the Night is an annual event that brings awareness to sexual violence and creates public space for survivors of sexual violence to share their stories. It’s something many of us look forward to every year as a time for community, strength, and healing. It would have been held on April 16th. Although we couldn’t come together in person, we still wanted to honor the stories of survivors at UMBC. Watch this video to learn more.

3. Chanel Miller’s book “Know My Name”

Chanel Miller’s book is a powerful memoir of strength and survival. Read her words and honor her story, and the stories of all survivors.

Important Take-Away:

→ Listen to Survivors stories. Without judgement and without questions.

→ Believe Survivors. No matter what they were wearing, what they were drinking, or what they did afterwards. Believe them.

Now that you’ve got some good items in your tool kit, what will you do with them? Here’s some Action Items:

Watch a movie or TV show centered on survivors’ experiences. “The Hunting Ground” and “Unbelievable” are unflinching looks into the reality of the sexual assault crisis in the United States. “Nanette” and “Rape Jokes” are hilarious comedy specials that critique rape culture from a survivors perspective.

Listen to Chanel Millers “Give a Damn Speech”. Delivered at the Glamour Woman of the Year awards, her speech is an important reminder to not just believe survivors, but give a damn about them. The speech can be found here.

Reflect on how you interact with the survivors in your life. Take what you’ve learned and implement it!

Revature is currently seeking candidates for the following entry-level positions:

9315748 – Junior Software Developer

9315748 – Software Engineer

9315749 – Technology Consultant

Levi May, a member of Revature’s Mid-Atlantic recruiting team, shares his thoughts about the organization:

If you had to describe Revature in three words, what would they be?

Inclusive. Innovative. Trend-Setting.

What is the number one thing you look for in a new team member?

Team players who are eager to learn in-demand technical skills and comfortable with nationwide relocation.

What do you want people interested in working at Revature to know about the company?

We have a demand-driven business model, which enables us to produce entry-level tech talent who are job ready from day one post-training!

Why did you originally choose to work for Revature?

The Tech Revolution has shaken up the labor market, with many entry-level jobs out there requiring 2-3 years of hard-core technical skills. I saw Revature’s model as extremely attractive, in that it hires associates of ALL MAJORS (regardless of GPA) and is able to equip trainees with the experience needed in just a 10-12 week period. After learning this, I had to apply!

Do you have any examples or remember a specific time that you loved working with your team?

The team works hard and loves laughing! I know I’m making a difference and helping both career beginners and career changers!

If you remember anything specific, can you talk about your interviewing/hiring process when you started at Revature?

Applicants go through a multi-step screen process for general aptitude, technical skills background, and soft skills. Our screening process ultimately determines their training pathway at Revature!

From this purge, the gay rights movement emerged to fight vigorously for LGBTQ individuals’ ability to work, regardless of their sexual orientation. By examining both government documents and the manuscripts of those involved in the budding gay rights movement, I evaluate how the Lavender Scare came into play and the reverberating effects on the LGBTQ community in the 1950s and 1960s. The Lavender Scare blossomed out of the anti-communist and homophobic paranoia of the McCarthy era and resulted in the termination of thousands of homosexual government employees and major panic in the LGBT community due to the loss of people’s sense of security, but the aftermath gave way to unity in the community and helped lay the foundation for equal LGBT rights in the United States. This research is increasingly relevant at a time when the Supreme Court is deciding a case on whether employees can be discriminated against based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Mentor: Meredith Oyen, History

This work was funded, in part, through an Undergraduate Research Award from the UMBC Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs.

Come see Rosie's presentation at URCAD, April 22-29! While these victims must be remembered and honored, history must also acknowledge the women who participated in protest and disobedience against Japanese imperialism. This research is conducted with the goal to tell the stories of the women often overlooked in the history of Colonial Korea in terms of their contributions toward Korean independence. Further, this research aims to discuss the unique obstacles Korean culture and society would pose to women of the era in context. Examination of text archiving the lives of notable figures and translated memoirs alongside prior studies will set the foundation of this research and reveal the complex and varied lives of women during Colonial Era Korea. Most importantly, this research will reveal the impact women had progressing Korean independence often overlooked in favor of and perhaps despite their male counterparts.

Mentor: Kyung-Eun Yoon, MLLI

Come see Ashley's presentation and other undergraduate research and creative work, April 22-29th at URCAD.umbc.edu!

URCAD Sneak Peek: Kelly McVicker

<Tagline>The effects of contaminates on the ecosystem</Tagline>

There is evidence to suggest that an effect might be the alteration of food web dynamics; when riparian spiders, especially those of the genus Tetragnatha, consume emerging aquatic insects, PPCPs move into terrestrial systems. To observe the effect on urbanization on prey availability, spiders were collected, and sticky traps were set out for insects along the Gwynns Falls watershed along a gradient from urban to rural. The data suggest that there are more prey available to spiders in urban riparian systems than in rural riparian systems, and that the prey available in urban riparian systems is a higher proportion of aquatic species than terrestrial species. This is supported by the fact that the spiders in urban areas were significantly longer from cephalothorax to abdomen. Because the spiders were not significantly larger in mass, the data implies that the prey available in urban areas, though more abundant, are smaller. Thus, contamination in urban streams will have a higher impact on tetragnathids and on urban terrestrial systems.

Mentor: Chris Hawn

Come see Kelly's presentation and other undergraduate research and creative work, April 22-29th at URCAD.umbc.edu!

Hidden throughout the compact lines and curves, you will find a mixture of bold and minute details that expose my internal thoughts and emotions in their most raw form. Common inspiration for my art style tends to draw from the stark contrast between nature and technology, along with depictions of isolation, introversion, and overthinking. A major source of gratification for me is listening to what people see when they look at my art; It is as if I am alongside the creation of a new piece each time. Every single person thus far has abstracted a meaning unique to their own personal experiences, desires, and emotions. My mediums usually consist of portrait paper, touched with varying thicknesses of black ink pens, and sometimes filled with colored pencil. The more recent of my works combine digital editing, musical underlays, colorful tones, and movement, creating newfound dimensions to the abstracts. My need to create is an ultimate function of my coping mechanism to the pushes and pulls on my experiences.

Come see Jaylan's artwork and other undergraduate research and creative work, April 22-29th at URCAD.umbc.edu!

Presenters and Guests:

umbc.edu/go/urcadonline (to create/submit a VT to urcadonline)

umbc.edu/go/urcadonline-faq (for information on how to create/view/comment in VT)

COVID-19 Student Refunds

Dear UMBC Students,

Thank you for your patience as we navigated systems and created a process to administer refunds to students and families for costs paid for services and facilities they can no longer access given the University’s necessary shift to distance education due the COVID-19 pandemic. While these service contracts and licenses have been terminated due to the COVID-19 force majeure event, we found it appropriate and reasonable to reimburse students and families. As we shared at the end of March, the University System of Maryland Board of Regents gave us their approval to refund room, board, and certain fees, on a pro rata basis.

We are pleased to announce that refund amounts will be credited to student accounts by Monday, April 20 and most students will receive refunds within the next two weeks. UMBC students will receive a prorated refund for on-campus housing and meal plans and the following fees: Athletic, University Commons, Auxiliary Facilities, Transportation, and 50 percent of the prorated Undergraduate Student Activities fee and Graduate Program fee. Details on our calculations are provided below.

Your refund will be posted as a credit to your student account, and will be applied first to any outstanding balances. Remaining balances will be disbursed to students using BankMobile, our refund partner, through your preselected refund preference.

We appreciate BankMobile’s partnership in signing up large numbers of our students so that you can receive your refund quickly. If you are among the very few students who have not already done so, instructions for selecting a refund preference can be found here. Electronic delivery of refunds is the fastest and most secure method of receiving your funds.

If you have questions, please submit a help ticket to Student Business Services.

Lynne Schaefer, Vice President, Finance and Administration, and Nancy Young, Vice President for Student Affairs

Co-Chairs, UMBC Crisis Management Executive Team

Refund Calculations

Mandatory Fees Refund

UMBC is refunding 55% of the total Athletic, University Commons, Auxiliary Facilities, and Transportation fees. This calculation is based on 59 distance education days out of 107 semester days. Refunds will not be issued for the Technology fee as these services are still available and in use by students.

The undergraduate Student Activities fee and the Graduate Program fee are being refunded at 27.5%, half of 55%. This is at the request of the Student Government Association and Graduate Student Association, as student organizations are still receiving and using the funds provided by these fees for the benefit of students.

Housing Refund

Residential Life refunds are prorated by calculating the daily room rate (Semester Rate /115 days in the semester). Refunds reflect the days that Residential Life was unable to honor the terms of the housing license, based on student’s assignment in either a 9-month or 8-month community. Students that were approved to remain on campus will receive a refund calculated based on their last day of occupancy.

Nine-month housing permits students to remain during break periods. These students vacated campus on March 14, 2020 and had 67 unavailable days. These communities include: West Hill, Terrace, Hillside, Potomac and designated Harbor rooms.

Eight-month housing requires students to vacate during break periods. These students left during the normal break closing period, but were unable to return as planned on March 23. They had 58 unavailable days. These communities include: Patapsco, Susquehanna, Chesapeake, Erickson, and designated Harbor Hall rooms.

The housing refund does not include the $175 semester communication fee that covers Xfinity Streaming IPTV which continues to be available to students.

Walker Avenue Apartments are managed by CapStone On-Campus Management, who will directly issue prorated refunds to eligible residents. Room charges for Walker Avenue Apartments are not posted to student accounts and will be managed by CapStone.

Meal Plan Refund

Student Recurring meal plan refunds are based on the daily rate for Spring 2020. Meal plans were scheduled to resume on March 22 when students would have moved back to campus, which left 60 days remaining in the Spring 2020 semester that will be credited as refunds.

Recurring meal plan daily rates are as follows: Ultimate - $21.52; Savvy 16 - $21.29; Flexible 14 - $23.54; Terrific 12 - $18.39; Flexible 10 - $19.58; and the Flexible 5 - $7.90.

Student Block meal plans are based on the remaining number of meals not used from the plan purchased. The per meal rate for Block Plans are as follows:

Super 225 - $ 9.13

Mega 50 - $ 9.52

Mini 25 - $10.12

In addition, refunded amounts will include any remaining meal plan flex dollar balances.

For questions concerning meal plan refunds, please submit a help request.
