New Employee Profile: Anna Pittinger

<Tagline>Welcome to the Career Center team!</Tagline>

Although COVID-19
has been a crazy time for everyone, we have been fortunate to have recently
hired Anna Pittinger as a new member of the Career Center team. While we are disappointed
that we can’t welcome her to UMBC’s physical campus right now, we are excited
to have her on board and look forward to having her join us in Math/Psych 201 in
the future! Take a look at the profile below to learn a little bit more about
          Anna.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where
are you from? Where did you go to school?

I am originally from Baltimore Maryland
but currently live in Annapolis MD. I went to Baltimore School for the Arts
High School and graduated from Towson University with a degree in Sociology and
          minor in Psychology.

What did you do before coming to the
          Career Center?

I worked for Hyatt and Marriott Hotels
as an Event and Sales Manager. I also worked for some smaller organizations as
a Director of Programs and Events. In addition, I enjoy cooking and owned a
small Catering Company in Arnold that did small local events.

What will you be working on at UMBC?

Career Services and Events with a focus
          on service and employer relationships.

What are you most excited about for your
          new role?

The people at UMBC! The Institution is
wonderful- students, staff, employers, alumni, everyone. It is an incredible
place to work because of the values and people.

Do you have a secret talent?

I was a dancer at Baltimore School for
the Arts when I went to high school there and I love to cook. I was the chef
and owner of my own tiny catering business.

What was your first job or internship?

First Job - TJ Maxx.

First Internship - I was and am an
          Albert Schweitzer Fellow.

How are you spending your COVID-19
          quarantine?

Learning more about UMBC, adapting to
two children at home and how to assist their awesome teachers “e-teach,” more
family time, and exploring things I haven't had time to do before.

Please join us in welcoming Anna to the
team! We are so happy to have her with us during this crazy time and even more
excited to see her on campus.

Dear Members of the UMBC Research Community,

Thanks to all of you for quickly adapting to the challenges we now face and for your thoughtful approach in adjusting to the various rules that have been put in place to keep you and the rest of the campus community safe and healthy during this difficult period.

We recognize that the changes are significantly impacting progress in research, scholarship, and creative activities conducted by students and faculty and that we must take steps to mitigate this interruption in research activity.

As you know, UMBC, in coordination with the other research institutions in the University System of Maryland, transitioned into Research Maintenance Mode on March 18. Details on this transition are available on the UMBC Research web site. As a result, almost all of our research and studio facilities are currently in hibernation mode, with important specimens stored in freezers, valuable instruments placed in suspension mode, and countless experiments delayed or canceled. A very limited number of faculty and staff are currently accessing laboratories on an occasional basis to see that key research resources are secure and expensive instrumentation is maintained.

We are preparing for a dedicated Research Town Hall for Friday, April 17, to provide updates and answer your questions. Watch out for more details on this Research Town Hall shortly.

We thank the many of you who have looked for ways to help, including those involved in a grassroots effort to collect masks and other protective equipment and donate them for use by doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers who are on the frontlines fighting this disease.

We are working closely with colleagues across the state and the nation – through APLU and other national organizations – to communicate with the federal agencies and explore options for supporting research, including supplements to existing awards. We are also tracking new opportunities for research directly related to COVID-19. For instance, UMB’s Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) has launched a new call specifically for collaborative ATIP proposals related to COVID-19 research, including prevention, control, and response efforts.

The Research Office continues to be open for business – all of our OVPR staff are well versed in working remotely.
URCAD Sneak Peek: Emily Godfrey

  <Tagline>"terminal": Contemporary Choreographic Perspectives</Tagline>

Emily is a URA Scholar and a Linehan Artist Scholar. Her dance performance, "terminal," will be viewable at at Virtual URCAD 2020!

Abstract:

“terminal” is a dance that explores the individual choice forced upon family members when a family dynamic is drastically changed forever. The work was researched and created for the Senior Dance Concert (November 2019), performed at the Fall Dance Showcase (December 2019), and will perform again at the “American College Dance Association” in March 2020. The inspiration of the work derived from observing the different ways a family reacts to the slow passing of a loved one that once connected the community. While the movement and placement of the dancers should somewhat show the original and intended message the choreographer envisioned, the audience is given the choice to create their own meaning to the dance, derived from what they experienced. Emphasizing the dimensionality from a range of minimalistic gestures to athletic locomotion, four dancers show a wide range of movement vocabulary to express confrontation, intimacy, and the feeling of imbalance. The piece is intentionally left open-ended, leaving the audience to reflect, react, and invoke discussion. So long as the work resonates with the viewer, the experience is what matters, not the presentation of a theme.

Mentor: Carol Hess, Dance

Come see Emily's performance, and other undergraduate research and creative work , April 22-29th at URCAD.umbc.edu!

REPOST: Counseling Center Statement on COVID-19 & Xenophobia

Reposting to amplify and stand in solidarity with our Counseling Center colleagues.

--

In these uncertain times, it is important as a community and a nation that we don’t lose sight of our identities, our purpose, and our impact. As such, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s (UMBC) Counseling Center is taking a firm stance against the recent increase in xenophobia and racism that has been perpetrated against Chinese and Asian communities.

While the coronavirus (COVID-19) was declared by the World Health Organization as a global pandemic on March 11, 2020, some have chosen to refer to it as the “Chinese Virus,” the “Wuhan Virus,” or a “foreign virus.” This language falsely suggests that Chinese or Asian people are the sole carriers of the disease, while also dangerously ignoring the fact that any person, of any race or ethnicity, may be a carrier. Further, this misinformation racializes a public health emergency and perpetuates discrimination against ethnic Chinese (or other Asian) people, reflecting a long-standing history of xenophobia – a form of prejudice against people from other countries. Acts of discrimination, harassment, violence, and verbal aggression towards Chinese and Asian people in the U.S. have increased as a result and have imbued hate and fearmongering into an atmosphere already rife with uncertainty and anxiety.

UMBC draws its strength from its diversity of thought, cultures, backgrounds, and the importance with which inclusivity is upheld and championed. Asian and Asian American (especially Chinese and Chinese American) students, staff, and faculty are valued members of the UMBC community. UMBC’s Counseling Center decries racist or xenophobic rhetoric, behavior, or ideology. Furthermore, as mental health providers, we understand the negative psychological, physiological, and sociological effects of scapegoating, victim blaming, and bias in a time where we all need to find ways to be supported, connected, and truly informed.

Research shows that experiences of discrimination can lead to confusion, self-doubt, anxiety, sadness, loneliness, and depression, along with a host of physical ailments. While it is understandable that these times of uncertainty have led to anxiety and fear, engaging in blame and othering behaviors only increases paranoia, mistrust, and emotional distancing, which in turn fuel anxiety and fear. Simply put, increasing belonging and connection helps us all, spreading division and distrust hurts us all. For a community built on inclusive excellence, we know the choice to make, so we hope you join us in denouncing discrimination and addressing xenophobia and racism in all its forms.

For tips and resources please visit: Counseling Center Website.

URCAD Sneak Peek: Liam Garrett

<Tagline>UMBC's "Tiger King" exhibits art about endangered animals</Tagline>

As the founder of The Digital Art Movement at UMBC, it has been my ambition for almost three years now to create digital art pieces that reflect who we are now, and the issues our generation faces. Using metaphorical imagery, and patterns (chosen because these are visual attributes we are built to scan and read into,) I have created a series about endangered animals that is built to be interpreted, and affordable. With 15% of profit going to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), my hope is that digital art can play a role in the cause to better our environment and protect its animals. In this presentation I will share my experience with the digital art medium and its role in the future of art. With the world delving deeper into the digital realm every day, it is my belief that digital art will soon be of major interest to the art world. Art is the practice of exploration and expression, and the digital world is the new frontier.

Come see Liam's artwork and other undergraduate research and creative work, April 22-29th at URCAD.umbc.edu!

Through reflecting, I discovered my struggle to remain true to my identity, in this age of rampant technology. For my final project I desired to have it change me. I challenged myself to document days without my phone, to De-Cyborg. Initially, I spent more time by myself than usual. Making plans with friends couldn't be instant anymore. The isolation created loneliness, however, I soon found joy in thinking and processing without distraction. I wrote poetry and surrounded myself with nature; my mind was clear for the first time in awhile. This four minute video invites the audience to explore my internal conversation with my phone, as I refer to it as “you”. In a broader scope I hope the audience will begin to challenge their own thoughts, and question the impact their phone has on them. In the end, I give the final question of “Do I need you?” During college, I have chosen convenience over mental health, in choosing to keep my phone. My aspiration for the future is being able to balance life without it, and focusing on what matters.

Mentor: Tania Lizarazo

Come see Julia's film and other undergraduate research and creative work, April 22-29th at URCAD.umbc.edu!
