Featured Employer: NuHarbor Security

    what would they be?

Security, Passion, and Education

What is the number one thing you look for in a new team
    member?

We are
looking for passionate people that are excited to work for a cyber security
company. We look for a new team
member to fit our companies’ culture! We look for a new team member who will always
put their team first, strive to do better for our customers, and continue to
    learn and grow.

What qualities do your coworkers possess that make them
    enjoyable to work with?

We think that getting to spend time with the awesome people
we work with is one of the best perks of the job. NuHarbor Security employees
are very easy to talk to! We use slack for interoffice communication and always
have several conversations going on from division specific conversations to a
watercooler where we encourage random conversation from weekend plans to
favorite beers. In our Vermont office we
frequently host lunch events from potlucks to pizza and beverages of choice
days. What makes our coworkers so
great to work alongside is their passion for what they do, their
openness to welcoming new members, and their drive for the company as a whole,
to be the best that they can be for the good of each other and the company!

What makes
you enjoy going to work and how does the culture promote that? What about the office encourages that
    supportive environment and culture?

What makes me
enjoy working for NuHarbor is not only that we are located in the beautiful
state of Vermont and get to see the mountains everyday on our way to work. It’s
the fact that when you are hired and are going through onboarding you are never
a stranger for long. For new students who have just graduated the first day let
alone first week may seem scary. Have no fear, by the end of the first week
everyone has stopped by to say welcome and introduce themselves to you. The
communication is amazing at NuHarbor, there isn’t the need to feel like you are
bothering someone when you send a Slack message over to them! Something that makes NuHarbor stand out is how we follow
our values. Everyone is on the same page when it comes to our them, protect the
house, help our clients win, and always be learning are the three values that
    all our employees model

Why did you originally choose to work for NuHarbor
    Security?

I choose to work for NuHarbor because of the great things Iheard about the company. I came from a huge companyand I was yearning for a smallercompany
with a “family” feel! We were voted #4 for “Best Places to Work” in Vermont for
2018, we are waiting on the 2019 results but we already know we are somewhere within
    the first 50!

Do you have any examples or remember a specific time that
you loved working with your team?

Currently our
company had to transition from working at the office to 100% working remote. At
a time where the unknown was frightening our company really kept us together. Justin
our CEO has put on a couple events to keep us updated and at ease. He put on a virtual
“town hall” where he updated everyone about what was happening at NuHarbor! Our
departments managers all gave an update on their departments! I really enjoyed
and found it important to get together as a company. On Fridays we have been
doing a “virtual happy hour” as a company! The last two weeks we have had
themes for the zoom meetings, everyone joins with fun virtual backgrounds! This
upcoming Friday is our first Bingo game!!! Even though we are all separated and
not in the office environment we are kept in the loop of what’s happening and
able to still enjoy each other’s company!

If you remember anything specific, can you talk about
your interviewing/hiring process when you started at (NAME OF COMPANY)?

The hiring process at NuHarbor was very personable! They
clearly love what they do! Kathie Cheney the HR director started the interview
process with a pre-screen phone call “trying to get to know me” were we just
chatted about what I currently did and what interested me in this opportunity. We
then had a “face to face” with another person from the HR team. They asked me
about what they were looking for and asked me some questions regarding the
position, I was able to ask question about the company too! The next step I was
brought back in for another face-to-face where I had a full panel interview
with a couple people from the different departments! They asked me more
technical questions and opened it up for me to ask the managers questions. They
even gave me the grand tour of the offices! From
there I heard back within the next 12 hours about the verdict!

What internal mobility is available, and how soon can
employees take advantage of growth opportunities?

Our company is growing! We are taking on more clients and
expanding our boundaries across the East Coast! There are a lot of
opportunities for internal mobility within our company! If you are successful
and are doing a great job you will not go unnoticed. We keep a lot of our
employee’s strengths and aspirations into our recruiting mind frame.

Why do you hire UMBC students?

We see that
there is a lot of correlation between what UMBC students focus on and what we
do daily at NuHarbor Security and are excited about the opportunities to hire
    within the University! We have
researched the Cybersecurity Track and Cybersecurity Analytics certificates and
feel these individuals would be able to hit the ground running at NuHarbor
    Security!

URCAD Sneak Peek: Crystal Parry

<Tagline>Therapies for Blood Vessel Deposits and Inflammation</Tagline>

Crystal is a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major, an LSAMP participant, a Meyerhoff Scholar, and an HHMI Scholar. Her research, "IL-1β-VEGF-A Signaling Axis In Atherosclerotic Calcification" will be presented as part of at Virtual URCAD 2020!

Abstract:

Atherosclerosis is characterized by lipid and calcium deposition and inflammation in blood vessels. Pro-inflammatory cytokine IL -1β contributes to inflammation that is characteristic of atherosclerosis. Previous research on signal transducers RAC1 and RAC2 demonstrated that RAC2 knockout mice had increased RAC1 activity, resulting in increased levels of IL-1β and calcification. These studies also focused on studying the growth factor VEGF-A, which promotes blood vessel formation. Preliminary data suggests the promoter region of the gene encoding VEGF-A is activated by IL-1β signaling. The goal of this study is to assess the relationship between VEGF-A, IL-1β, and atherosclerotic calcification. Our hypothesis is that increased levels of IL-1β associated with increased VEGF-A expression and calcification. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were used to determine the levels of IL-1β and VEGF-A in blood serum samples from the mice. Macrophage knockdown of IL-1β expression in ApOE mice led to reduced VEGF-A expression and atherosclerotic calcification. These results were validated by comparing levels of IL-1β, VEGF-A, and calcification in human subjects. Future studies are underway to demonstrate that VEGF-A causes calcification, using knockdown of VEGF-A expression. By understanding the relationship between IL-1β, VEGF-A, and atherosclerotic calcification, therapeutic strategies can be developed to combat atherosclerosis.

Mentor: Alan Morrison, Brown University

Come see Crystal's poster, and other undergraduate research and creative work, April 22-29th at URCAD.umbc.edu!

Counseling Center Statement on COVID-19 and Xenophobia

In these uncertain times, it is important as a community and a nation that we don’t lose sight of our identities, our purpose, and our impact. As such, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s (UMBC) Counseling Center is taking a firm stance against the recent increase in xenophobia and racism that has been perpetrated against Chinese and Asian communities.

While the coronavirus (COVID-19) was declared by the World Health Organization as a global pandemic on March 11, 2020, some have chosen to refer to it as the “Chinese Virus,” the “Wuhan Virus,” or a “foreign virus.” This language falsely suggests that Chinese or Asian people are the sole carriers of the disease, while also dangerously ignoring the fact that any person, of any race or ethnicity, may be a carrier. Further, this misinformation racializes a public health emergency and perpetuates discrimination against ethnic Chinese (or other Asian) people, reflecting a long-standing history of xenophobia – a form of prejudice against people from other countries. Acts of discrimination, harassment, violence, and verbal aggression towards Chinese and Asian people in the U.S. have increased as a result and have imbued hate and fearmongering into an atmosphere already rife with uncertainty and anxiety.

UMBC draws its strength from its diversity of thought, cultures, backgrounds, and the importance with which inclusivity is upheld and championed. Asian and Asian American (especially Chinese and Chinese American) students, staff, and faculty are valued members of the UMBC community. UMBC’s Counseling Center decries racist or xenophobic rhetoric, behavior, or ideology. Furthermore, as mental health providers, we understand the negative psychological, physiological, and sociological effects of scapegoating, victim blaming, and bias in a time where we all need to find ways to be supported, connected, and truly informed.

Research shows that experiences of discrimination can lead to confusion, self-doubt, anxiety, sadness, loneliness, and depression, along with a host of physical ailments. While it is understandable that these times of uncertainty have led to anxiety and fear, engaging in blame and othering behaviors only increases paranoia, mistrust, and emotional distancing, which in turn fuel anxiety and fear. Simply put, increasing belonging and connection helps us all, spreading division and distrust hurts us all. For a community built on inclusive excellence, we know the choice to make, so we hope you join us in denouncing discrimination and addressing xenophobia and racism in all its forms.

For tips and resources please visit: Counseling
    Center Website

The Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities
is pleased to announce its 2019-20 research fellows. Two projects were selected
for funding - one led by Dr. Patricia
Young, associate professor of education, and the other led by Dr. Jane Lincove, associate professor
    of public policy at UMBC.

Dr. Young and co-investigator, Ms. Deborah Kariuki (Master
of Arts in Education Graduate Program, UMBC), will conduct a yearlong study
    entitled, Infusing a Culture-based
Computational Thinking Curriculum in Urban Preschools. They will work with
Judy Center faculty and staff at Lakeland Elementary/Middle School to improve young
learners’ computational thinking, thereby enhancing their problem solving
skills and creativity. Dr. Young and Ms. Kariuki will develop, and with
preschool teachers, test the Culture-based Computational Thinking Curriculum and
instructional materials. In addition, they will design a parents’ guide to computational
    thinking for young learners.

Dr. Lincove with co-investigators, Dr. Lieny Jeon (Johns
Hopkins University) and Ms. Sarah Bollard (Baltimore City Public Schools), will
conduct a three-year study entitled, Judy
Centers in Baltimore: Improving Data-Informed Decisions. This study will
develop a new database from existing sources to investigate the effect of Judy
Center services on young children’s kindergarten readiness, the relative
effectiveness of different Judy Center programs and services, and the potential
for measuring outcomes for children before
they enter kindergarten. In addition to improving early childhood data systems
and infrastructure, this project will produce relevant research for policy and
    program improvements.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Young, Dr. Lincove, and
    their co-investigators.

Over the past few weeks, we have seen you demonstrate resilience, perseverance, and an unwavering resolve to help solve problems. We’ve watched as students, faculty, and staff have found new ways to build and sustain community during these uncertain times. Thank you for your creativity, patience, and compassion.

It’s been nearly three weeks since we wrote to share the unfortunate and disappointing news that we will not be able to hold in-person commencement ceremonies this spring. We invited you to work with us to find the best way to celebrate the many achievements of the Class of 2020, and we’ve been inspired by the thoughtful response. Over the past few weeks, we have heard from many students, parents, and colleagues about their concerns, and also their visions for how we recognize our graduates. More than 600 students responded to a survey and shared a range of ideas that have helped our team make important decisions and move forward.

Overwhelmingly, our students still want to celebrate in May, and we agree. We will be using a novel technology platform to host virtual commencement celebrations in May. We will keep you informed as we explore these alternatives. Know that we—like you—want to have an in-person event so we can celebrate your accomplishments together, and we will find a way to make it happen. We will be in contact soon.

This is a generation-defining moment. We know that the Class of 2020 includes compassionate leaders and creative problem solvers. We need thinkers and experts across disciplines who can help us navigate our current and future challenges. We know that this is our Class of 2020. We shared your promise and potential with the world in a recent op-ed in The Baltimore Sun.

With our students as our inspiration, we cannot help but find reasons to be hopeful for the future.
