Brown Center for Entrepreneurship as their Social Media Marketing Intern. Each week, I create and post material on our Instagram, Twitter, and myUMBC groups. I am also responsible for updating/enhancing the website through WordPress. In addition, I attend all of our events and take photos of our guest speakers.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard of this position on UMBCworks last spring. Once I saw the application come out, I did not hesitate to apply because I knew this was going to be something I would really enjoy doing. Prior to applying, I went to the Career Center a few times to ensure that my resume was good to go and my interview skills were ready. Later, I heard back right away after applying and followed through with the process of obtaining my position through two more interviews before receiving the final offer.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I love working with my boss and having the freedom to create content on all social media platforms. The people I have met through this internship have inspired me to continue my career in this field.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

The content I have created has really helped our organization increase event attendance by spreading the word about entrepreneurship and has even influenced people to add our minor. More and more students have been more interested in the Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship, and I’m looking forward to the Spring semester.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Don't be afraid to create and work on something that you haven’t before. Prior to this internship, I thought that I would struggle using the software to update the website, but after some practice it actually became easy and now I have another skill to add to my resume.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
Academic Year 2020-2021 Computer Replacement Initiative

Dear Faculty and Staff,

This is to announce the Computer Replacement Initiative (CRI) for the Academic Year 2020-2021. CRI is being extended across the campus to all faculty and staff; each division has developed the criteria to be used in that division. This continues to be an important initiative as we strive to provide our faculty and staff with the technology tools needed to carry out our academic mission.

Funds available for the CRI continue to be limited and consequently we anticipate that we will not be able to fund all the meritorious applications. Within Academic Affairs, the procedures for this year’s CRI will be the same as last year’s and we will also maintain the same subsidy levels as before. Specifically, the subsidy for a laptop is $1,000 and the subsidy for a desktop is $600. The goal for this differential is to promote the purchase of laptops by faculty and staff based on the advantages provided by laptops in the areas of academic continuity, sustainability, portability, and teaching with technology as we continue to enhance our pool of classrooms. Those wishing to purchase a different configuration may apply the subsidy amount toward the purchase of a customized computer configuration. All computers should minimally be purchased with a three-year warranty.

In order to ensure delivery and installation is completed in advance of the start of the fall 2020 semester, the schedule for this CRI cycle is again rather compressed. The new machines will be ordered in early June 2020, with installations planned for completion by the start of the fall semester. Given the success achieved during the previous years with a single procurement and mass distribution of PCs, we will continue with a similar program this year. As in the past, we will have several “standard” configurations included in this procurement. The minimum and recommended configurations for desktops and laptops can be found here.

The CRI has always required cost sharing of new computers. As indicated above, we will provide a subsidy of $600 for a desktop and $1,000 for a laptop.

We will place a bulk purchase with Dell so machines can be delivered and installed in advance of the start of the fall 2020 semester. Individuals will have the option of using the bulk purchase or ordering their customized unit from either Dell or another vendor. I encourage you to participate in this bulk purchase plan given the benefits we have seen in the past. Your department will be charged a one-time amount depending on which option you select. The options available and the exact department cost share for each option will be announced in March 2020 as soon as we have the information from Dell.

The timeline for this year’s CRI is:

February 10, 2020: Announcement sent to campus

March 27, 2020: Deadline for submitting the CRI application via the DoIT web form

April 10, 2020: Notification to chairs/directors of award recommendations from the review committee

April 17, 2020: Feedback from chairs/directors on the award recommendations

April 22, 2020: Review by the deans of the awards list

May 1, 2020: Awards are announced

May 31, 2020: Deadline for awardees to make their computer options selection

Early June 2020: Computer order will be placed

The application form is available here. First priority for funding is given to requestors with a computer that falls below the minimum standard and who have explained the need for a new computer under the mandatory narrative on the form. If you have questions about the CRI or these instructions, please contact Vice Provost Tony Moreira at (410) 455-6576, or Executive Administrative Assistant Susan Mocko at (410) 455-6577.

Philip Rous, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Staying Healthy This Flu Season

<Tagline>UMBC Family Connection Newsletter Article - Feb 2020</Tagline>

By Leslie MacManus, Dietetic Intern

We are just about at the midway point through the winter season and I’m sure for most of us out there, that means halfway through the sick season. It seems almost everyone will feel under the weather or get a cold at some point over the winter. Because of this, I wanted to seek out some nutrition tips to share with you that will help you stay healthy during the cold season. As an added bonus, having a strong and healthy immune system will help fight against other health problems such as arthritis, allergies, abnormal cell development and cancers. Although a well-rounded, balanced diet will be good for immune support, there are a few nutrients in particular that will give you that extra boost.

Protein: protein is an essential part of a healthy immune system. protein helps build and repair body tissues while also fighting off viral and bacterial infections. Therefore, protein aids in healing and recovery from an illness or damage. Good sources of protein include lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy products, soy products like tofu, nuts, seeds, beans and legumes.

Vitamin A: vitamin A works to regulate the immune system. This micronutrient helps protect against infections by keeping skin and tissues of different areas of the body healthy. These areas include in the mouth, stomach, intestines and respiratory system. Good sources of vitamin A include sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, eggs, apricots and broccoli.

Vitamin C: generally, when people think of cold-fighting nutrients, vitamin C is one of the first to come to mind. Vitamin C helps protect against infections by boosting immunity and stimulating the formation of different antibodies. Good sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit, red bell peppers, strawberries and tomato juice.

Vitamin E: this micronutrient works as an antioxidant. It is thought to improve immunity and neutralize free radicals. Good sources of vitamin E include fortified cereals, sunflower seeds, almonds, hazelnuts and peanut butter.

Zinc: zinc is an excellent micronutrient to include in your diet to help aid in wound healing. You can add some zinc to your diet by including foods like lean meat, seafood, poultry, milk, beans, nuts, and seeds.

Bottom line, it is more ideal to get these nutrients through your diet instead of through supplements. If you have further questions on how to boost your immunity and stay healthy this winter through nutrition, ask your dietitian on campus to help you out!
