Four Simple Steps to Apply for Graduation

The end is
in sight! If you've earned 90 or more
academic credits, you received a message from the Registrar's Office informing
you that you are eligible to apply for graduation.

However,
eligibility is only the start of the graduation application process. Below are
four simple steps you can take now to ensure that you’ll soon be shaking hands
with Dr. Hrabowski as you receive your UMBC diploma.

Note: Even if you do not plan to attend
the commencement ceremony, you still need to apply to graduate in order to earn
    your degree.

Step 1: Apply for
    Graduation!

Friday, February
14th is the last day undergraduates can apply for May Graduation.

Only those
students who have every single requirement needed for degree completion on
their spring semester schedules will be permitted to participate in the
    Commencement ceremony.

If you are
taking a course at another institution that you plan to transfer, you must have
    an approved Verification of
    Transferability formon file with
the Registrar’s Office and be prepared to submit a copy of your
    schedule.

Step 2:
    Embrace your degree audit!

Your degree
audit indicates your progress toward degree completion. If you see
“unsatisfied” items, these are requirements that need to be addressed immediately. Your degree audit is located on your profile in myUMBC, under "Degree."

Makesure
any substitutions or waivers of major requirements are documented in your
degree audit; you may need to submit a Help/RT ticket to
the Registrar’s Office to add these notations to your record.

Step 3:
Wrap up any outstanding details ASAP!

If you have
Advanced Placement or CLEP scores, transfer transcripts, 201 lever language
substitutions, or other items you need to provide to UMBC, delay no
longer! If the major, minor, or
certificate program on your record is out of date, or if you have additional
majors or minors that you need to remove, submit a new Declaration
of Major form. Any of these
items could prevent you from being able to graduate.

Step 4:
    Let the celebration begin!

Participating
in the commencement ceremony* and other celebratory activities on campus is the
culmination of all of your hard work. Take time to recognize all it took to get
you to this moment and be proud of your accomplishments!

Finally, use
    this link
    to check your Honors eligibility.

UMBC’s Participation in the ACE Internationalization

Dear UMBC Community,

Since the time of UMBC’s founding, our university community has recognized the benefits of international and global engagement, and the ways in which these activities support and enhance our mission as a research university. Many of our current students, faculty, and staff both facilitate and benefit from strong academic, personal, and professional connections around the world.

In 2018, UMBC was one of only eleven institutions in the nation selected to participate in the American Council on Education's (ACE) Internationalization Laboratory. This cohort-based program provides a guided process for higher education institutions to assess their current state of internationalization and also develop a plan for advancing the intercultural, international, and global dimensions of their mission, focusing in particular on the areas of education, research, and community engagement.

Since fall 2018, UMBC’s Internationalization Steering Committee and six subcommittees have led a campus-wide effort involving a rigorous self-study and wide-ranging conversations with the campus community focused on internationalization at UMBC. Today we are pleased to share with you UMBC’s Interim Report on Internationalization, a document that provides a snapshot of internationalization as it exists at UMBC today and proposes a number of recommendations as we consider the nature and scale of our international activities in the future.

We wish to thank the more than 400 students, faculty, and staff who helped guide the development of this report through active participation in subcommittee meetings, surveys, and/or focus groups. We also would like to thank the nearly 300 people who participated in the 2019 University Retreat and discussed and reviewed the initial findings and recommendations of the subcommittees. For your reference, background materials, including posters and session handouts that were provided to retreat participants, are available online.

As we develop a final report and recommendations in summer 2020, we hope that you will take this opportunity to read the interim report and provide feedback and further points of consideration using this short survey. We recognize that not every activity, partnership, and program of an international nature involving members of our community could be captured by the subcommittees because of the organic nature of many international initiatives. Therefore, we are also asking for your help in identifying in the survey any current missing international elements or activities.

This anonymous survey will be available until February 28, 2020.

President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous

New Year, New Diet?

<Tagline>UMBC Family Connection News Article - January 2020</Tagline>

By, Adam Sachs, RD

Campus Dietician

                Many people feel compelled to
start s new habit or make a lifestyle change starting after the first of the
year. A considerable percentage of people will try a new diet trend for their
new year’s resolution. This practice usually is brought on by the desire for
weight loss, compensating for indulging over the holidays, or just a general
desire to be healthier. Many diet trends from 2019 will carry over into 2020,
but a few new ones are popping up just in time for the New Year.

While there
is nothing wrong with wanting to improve your health through diet, many diet
trends are not based in science and research and can usually fall into the
category of “fad diets.” On another note, changing your diet in a major way
after the first of the year can sometimes not be very beneficial. Drastic
changes of diet can result in a major shift in your lifestyle and routine. So
much so that it can be very difficult to stick to your new plan. Many fad diets
offer unrealistic results in a very short amount of time, but usually come with
some extreme food and dietary restrictions, making them very difficult to
maintain. The best practice for changing your diet is to find small components
that you can alter and then build off of that. This helps to promote helpful
changes in gradual steps, making it much more achievable.

Now we can
take a look at some of the current and up and coming diet trends and some
          actual research surrounding them…

Ketogenic Diet

This popular
diet has been trending for the past 2-3 years, and will most likely continue
into 2020. Keto was never designed to be a diet for weight loss or healthy
eating. The ketogenic diet was originally a treatment for young children with
seizure disorder and epilepsy. Eating mostly fat and protein, with very little
carbs changes the way your brain uses fuel in your body. This process
drastically reduced the amount of seizures many young children were having. The
diet has since been taken up by many health and fitness communities as a way to
lose weight quickly. Keto requires a drastic change in most people’s usual
diet, which makes it very hard to maintain. Are bodies are meant to eat carbs,
they are not “bad” or “toxic.” Moderating and variety is key with any food, and
          that includes carbohydrates.

Food Combining

A relatively
new diet trend, food combing states that you will benefit from combining
certain food types, where as other food combinations are unhealthy and should
be avoided. For example, on this diet carbs and protein should never be eaten
together, and fruit and dairy should always be consumed on an empty stomach.
There is no research that supports the claims of this diet for the purposes of
weight loss or otherwise. Your body digests all food types the same way whether
they are eating together or not.

Meat analogs (beyond/impossible meats)

This trend
became popular towards the end of 2019, and will mostly likely continue to grow
this year. The concept is to have 100% plant based products that taste and look
identical to an animal protein product. The best example is the impossible
burger or the beyond meat burger. Eating more plant-based foods can be very
beneficial to your health and is also very sustainable. That being said, these
specific products are meant to very closely resemble the animal protein
product. For example the impossible burger is almost nutritionally identical to
a beef burger in terms of calories, sodium, fat, and protein. These products
are great if you would like to eat less total animal proteins, but they are not
always very different from a health standpoint.
