It Takes A Village

  <Tagline>Family Connection Newsletter - November 2019</Tagline>

By Mandi Koch, Graduate Coordinator, Internships & Employment, UMBC Career Center

When we think of career development, we typically think of an individual affair involving deep introspection and soul searching, but in reality, career development is most effective when students receive support from a multitude of sources. Essentially, effective career development takes a village. That village includes the UMBC Career Center and faculty, but it also importantly includes you as parents and family members.

So, as we prepare to come together as families and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving, it is an opportune time for you to connect with your student about career development.

Yeah, Yeah, I know. When you attended orientation, we told you to let your student be independent, make their own decisions, and for goodness sake do not hover over them like helicopters! True, we don’t want you to hover, but you are still a vital source of support to your student. The ultimate goal is to involve parents and family members in a way that encourages students to actively engage in career development.

So, what can you do as a parent or family member to encourage your student to do just that? The answer is quite a bit! The most effective route is to start an on-going conversation (not an inquisition). Approach your student with curiosity and the intention to empower them to begin and/or continue the career development process. The UMBC Career Center has a great timelineon our web site detailing recommended benchmarks by class level: Check this source out together to help guide your conversation today and in the future.

How else can you help this holiday? Students don’t know what they don’t know, so sharing your own story of your career trajectory can be immensely helpful. It provides students with information about real experiences in the working world, which will help them see career development as an ongoing process where perfection is not realistic. Don’t be afraid to put the Thanksgiving holiday to work on this matter. You and your student can create a larger family conversation about career development over turkey and stuffing with relatives sharing their experiences for all younger family members to hear. It may just make for better, more pleasant dinner conversation than the state of politics or the weather.

Need other ideas? Let us count the ways! Check out this guide for parents provided by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

Dietitian Tips: Navigating a Nutrition Facts Label

  <Tagline>November 2019 Newsletter Article</Tagline>

By Adam Sachs, RD with contributions from David Fitzgerald, Nutrition Intern

The
nutrition facts label can be a great way to examine the nutrition of certain
products before you purchase them. The information displayed on the label can
be overwhelming at times, but once you know what to look for, it can become a
very useful tool. In 2015 the FDA made changes to the required appearance and
content of the nutrition facts label. All food producers have until 2020 to
change over the labels on all of their products, but there is a good chance you
have seen the new label already on your usual food items.

A couple major
changes to take note of is the portion size and font size of servings,
calories, and major nutrients. The serving size was made to be more accurate
for a realistic servings. For example, on the previous label sometimes things
like a candy bar would be split into two servings, and it is unlikely for
someone to eat just half a candy bar. The font size of the serving size and
calorie amounts was also bolded and increased to make them easier to spot on a
label at the store. Another important distinction on the new label is the
inclusion of the “added sugars” section of the label. This tells consumers how
much sugar is put into the product that is not naturally found there.

Overconsumption of added sugars is linked to many health problems, so being
able to recognize it easily on a label can allow people to be more health
conscious. Keeping 80% of the products you buy below 10g of added sugar is a
good practice to reduce your overall intake. Some other things to look for in a
food label is fiber amount. The daily recommendations for fiber is 25-35 grams
per day, and many people fall short of this goal. Fiber can be good for Heart
and digestive health, while also reducing the impact of added sugars in many
foods. Great sources of fiber include whole grains, Legumes, nuts/seeds, and
fruits & vegetables. Just being more conscious of the food label and the
products you buy can lead you to making overall healthier purchased, and can
contribute to more mindful eating practices.

A student’s Perspective

Growing
up, my ideas of what food should be on my plate and how it affected my body was
related to the perception my family and friends had on food. They only knew
what school, or the news taught them about food but never realized the
consequences of eating excessive amounts of food containing harmful additives.
My family and friends mainly believed that as long as it tastes good you should
eat it. This act of nonchalantly ingesting food due to this reasoning can cause
future problems in our bodies as we only have one body to carry us the rest of
    our lives.

Over two years ago I switched to be more health-conscious about my
body and watching what I ate. I became pescatarian and tried to avoid added
sugars in food products. Not only did I do this, but I continued researching
ways to preserve your body and the effects they have are great. I have told my
family and friends about my research and at first they weren’t receptive, but
over time they realized that doing this will change how your body reacts. This
journey of re-teaching yourself about healthier eating and obtaining an
alternative lifestyle is challenging, but it is worth it in the long run.

Some important questions to ask when grocery shopping; "is there a better
alternative to this product that I frequently buy? How would my life
change without it?" These are important questions because it shows that you have
a health-oriented mindset and care about your body’s overall health. Consuming
excess sugars can reduce our intake of other healthy foods. Intake of large
quantities of added sugars can also be detrimental to your health in the long
term. These refined sugars can be found in a lot of your favorite items such as
condiments, fruit juices, granola bars and etc. Understanding the logistics of
food and how each ingredient plays a part into the preservation of the product
and how it affects your body will make you an informed consumer. It will help
you understand that food is the fuel for our bodies and if we don’t eat the
right foods to boost our vitamin and mineral counts then we will be missing out
on obtaining a better version of ourselves.

Internships

  <Tagline>Internships can be super helpful!</Tagline>

Are you looking to gain experience within a field you’ve never worked in? Your solution may be to get an internship! Internships are temporary jobs that are geared towards supplementing your education with in-the-field experience. Internships often include mentorships and other learning opportunities while on the job. They’re a great way to get that first taste of what your field is like in practice rather than just in the classroom. Sometimes you may even get paid for this awesome learning experience!

The Career Center has plenty of resources dedicated to helping you find and score the perfect internship. You can schedule an appointment with an internship coordinator for your major to discuss the internship search, and the steps to landing that internship.

The first step is to update your resume. Important sections to include are a skills section, academic coursework you’ve completed, and any work experience or internships you’ve had in the past. Don’t worry if you don’t have a lot of experience in your field of choice, that’s the point of an internship! Come into the Career Center to get your resume reviewed and approved for UMBCWorks. Our drop-in hours are Monday through Thursday from 2 pm to 4 pm and on Fridays from 12 pm to 4 pm. You can also always schedule an appointment with a Career Specialist to go over your resume in more detail.

The second step is to go into the Career Center to discuss internships, how to look for one, and the different kinds of internships within your field of choice that may be available to you. The internship coordinator you speak with will be determined by your major, so you’ll get specialized and specific help within your interests. You can schedule an appointment through UMBCWorks, or by calling (410)-455-2216.

Finally, begin your internship search using UMBCWorks! UMBCWorks has a job board with plenty of internship opportunities available for all majors. Your resume must be approved in order to apply through UMBCWorks, so don’t skip step one! Your resume will automatically be approved once you go in to have your resume reviewed, so come by for drop-ins any day of the week.

Coming up in the spring semester, the Career Center is hosting the Spring Internship and Career Fair on February 7th. The Career Fair will have lots of employers coming to campus to network with students and potentially hire them for internships or full-time job positions. If you’re looking for an internship, the Spring Internship and Career Fair is a great place to start! Be sure to bring copies of your resume to hand out to potential employers and come dressed to impress.

Internships are super helpful in getting those important first experiences within your field of study. Just because they’re not full-time jobs, don’t overlook them! They’re a great learning experience and networking opportunity and can lead to a full-time job offer.

Researcher of the Week: Emily Godfrey

  <Tagline>Choreographing her Passions Through Dance</Tagline>

Emily Godfrey is a Dance major with a minor in Psychology, who will graduate in May, 2020. She is a URA Scholar and a Linehan Artists Scholar. She performed her piece, "stoP ActiNg hysterICal” at last year's URCAD, and will present again this year.

Title of your research project:
Contemporary Choreographic Perspectives

Describe your project:
My project is to research performance and choreographic techniques from various contemporary/modern companies and utilizes that information to create my Senior Capstone Work, a twelve-minute dance performed by four dancers. Over the summer, I studied with the Paul Taylor Modern Dance Company (founded in 1954) and the Peridance Contemporary Dance Company (founded in 1984). This winter, I will be studying abroad with Ann Sofie Clemmensen to Denmark to research international contemporary techniques.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project?
Professor Carol Hess is the chair of the dance department and has mentored me throughout my university experience, offering guidance from course work to compositional ideas. I have a very trusting relationship with her and I really value her advice and input.

How did you become interested in this project?
I wanted to gather as much research and experience in the process of creating my senior capstone work. I wanted to continue my dance technique training while jumping in to a company lifestyle to gain a better understanding of the career I was pursuing. I learned of the Paul Taylor Modern Dance Company through a UMBC faculty member, Constance Dinapoli, and I discovered the work of the Peridance Contemporary Dance Company when a UMBC alumni became an apprentice there.
Those companies, though vastly different in style, carry choreographic ideas and themes that captured my attention.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?
A natural change in creating a new choreographic work is translating my artistic vision to my dancers while allowing their own artistry and interpretation. All the dancers I am working with are inexperienced learning movement created by a student choreographer and performing in the modern-contemporary genre. During the process of creating the work, I had to take my time and have patience explaining the different movement styles because what was natural to me was foreign to them. Another challenge, while expected was nevertheless difficult, was working within a constrained amount of time, to complete and premier the work.

What has been the most rewarding part?
The work premiered November 8th and 9th, and when I was able to watch the piece in full performance mode, I felt fulfilled. I had been focusing on tiny (but important) details and giving my cast reminders right before the show, unsure if they would be able to embody everything. Watching the piece and hearing the audiences reaction, everyone taking their own meaning but the movement still resonating within them, was the most rewarding.

How will you disseminate your research?
I plan to present my research at URCAD 2020 by premiering my senior capstone piece again. Prior to the next performance, I plan to look over the piece and discuss with my mentor any changes or adjustments I can make.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Research derives from your passion(s), the need to explore, discover, and create. The work is never quite done, but that is what makes the research thrilling. For myself, dance is forever evolving and changing, and I know that there will always be new inspiration and the need to share my creative outlook.

What are your career goals?
After I graduate in Spring 2020, I plan to work with a professional dance company under contract while still creating pieces to gain a choreographic fellowship.
