    <p><strong><em><span>Tell us about your internship, co-op, or
    research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.</span></em></strong><span></span></p>
    
    <p><span>I was handling a temporary project looking into
    characterizing ZNF503 zebrafish mutants by CRIPSR CAS9 mutagenesis and
    identifying a viable male and female mutant to produce 100% mutant offspring.
    ZNF503 is a gene associated with optic coloboma, defects in eye development.
    Specifically, it causes the malformation of the optic fissure closure, which
    prevents a complete fusion of the optic cup that leads to blindness. My duties
    included setting up multiple breeding pairs on a weekly basis, collection of
    any embryos from the breedings, performing PCR to amplify the desired deletion
    mutation, and performing gel electrophoresis to identify any mutants and
    confirm whether the pair is viable to produce mutants. Afterwards, I set up
    some of the embryos for cryosectioning and, using those slides, I immunostained
    them with specific antibodies that are prevalent in the eye. </span><span></span></p>
    
    <p><strong><em><span>Describe the process of obtaining your position.
    When did you hear of the position and submit your application?</span></em></strong><span></span></p>
    
    <p><span>I heard about the internship
    last summer from my neighbor. He told me that the National Eye Institute has a
    DIVRO program focused on diversity in visual research and ophthalmology which
    sounded like an amazing opportunity for me. The application window ran
    throughout the winter where I applied sometime in February, and by late March I
    received an email with a position offer. </span><span></span></p>
    
    <p><strong><em><span>What have you enjoyed the most about your
    position or organization? </span></em></strong><span></span></p>
    
    <p><span>Getting to know everyone at the
    branch and learning about the research that they have dedicated many years to.
    Much of this research has direct impact on human lives. </span><span></span></p>
    
    <p><strong><em><span>How do you believe you have made an impact
    through your work?</span></em></strong><span></span></p>
    
    <p><span>Although my work was
    preliminary, it has provided the foundation for further studies down the line.</span><span></span></p>
    
    <p><strong><em><span>What advice would you give to another student
    who is seeking an internship or similar experience? </span></em></strong><span></span></p>
    
    <p><span>Reach out and get connections with people in the
    area of research that interests you. Look into the research that the Private
    Investigators are working on to get an idea of their work and show similar
    interest when you reach out. Also, fill out the application early to get a
    better chance of getting a position.</span><span></span></p>

          <div class="html-content"><div>The National Security Agency (NSA) is now accepting applications for the Cooperative Education Program! Our application will be closing on November 15th, 2019. </div><div><br></div><div><strong>What is the Co-op Program? </strong></div><div><br></div><div>The Cooperative Education Program is a rotational program, in which students will alternate semesters between full-time SCHOOL and full-time WORK (including the Summer) until graduating with their Bachelor’s Degree for a minimum of 52 weeks worked with the Agency. In this type of program, they will be able to gain a wealth of knowledge and experience the many aspects of the Agency as it relates to their intended career path.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Who is eligible?</strong></div><div><br></div><div>The Cooperative Education program (Co-op) is offered to second semester freshman and sophomores.   <Title>Latest grants from the Hrabowski Fund for Innovation</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span>UMBC is proud to announce the projects selected to receive grants in the 2018-2019 rounds of the <em>Hrabowski Fund for Innovation competition</em>.<br><br><strong>IMPLEMENTATION &amp; RESEARCH AWARDS (Spring 2019)</strong></span></div><div><span><strong><br></strong></span></div><div><span><strong>Ethical considerations in data science curricula</strong> — A multidisciplinary team led by Vandana Janeja (Information Systems) will develop a pedagogical module to infuse ethics into data science and related curricula. The team will work with faculty partners across campus to design lectures (in person and online) to discuss ethical considerations in data science, particularly focused on decision making throughout the data life cycle. The modules will be evaluated by pre- and post-surveys, including scenarios of decision making during the development of a data science project. Colleagues from other academic units involved in ethical reasoning and data science education will be invited to participate throughout the round-tables and utilize the module for their own classes. This project will provide leadership opportunities to engage with partners across the country in future opportunities.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><strong>Understanding, Assessing and Improving Student Teamwork</strong> — A multidisciplinary team led by Simon Stacey (Honors College) aims to understand, assess and improve student teamwork skills and behaviors. The team will focus primarily on the textual interactions of students collaborating through online platforms and will also transcribe a limited set of face-to-face interactions in the later stages of the project. The interactions will be analyzed by 1) generating statistical data focusing on the form of the interactions and 2) exploring the content of the interactions by identifying the characteristics and behaviors of successful interactions using qualitative content analysis and machine learning techniques. The ultimate goal will be to use the qualitatively coded interactions to train a neural network to perform qualitative coding. The team will provide information to instructors, teams, and team members in real time to allow for changes in behavior, adaptations, support and interventions.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><strong>SEED AWARD (Spring 2019)</strong></span></div><div><span><strong><br></strong></span></div><div><span><strong>Text + Code = Better Machine Learning Education</strong> — Tim Oates (Computer Science and Electrical Engineering) will write the first several chapters of a Machine Learning textbook in a format that allows free intermingling of code, data, interactive visualizations, and professional quality typesetting. The tools used to write and represent the book are based on the default technology stack for modern machine learning, which enables active experimentation with live examples. Students can read about a concept or algorithm and then text their understanding interactively inside the textbook. Tim will use surveys to evaluate the utility of the proposed format by measuring differences in engagement and understanding between the proposed format and a standard print textbook.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><strong>SCHOLARSHIP OF TEACHING &amp; LEARNING AWARDS (Spring 2019)</strong></span></div><div><span><strong><br></strong></span></div><div><span><strong>The Influence of the “Seeing White” Podcast Course on Racial Knowledge, Attitudes, and Skills among Undergraduate Students</strong> — A team led by M. Nicole Belfiore (Social Work) will evaluate the effect of a semester long course based on the “Seeing White” podcast on undergraduate students’ racial attitudes, knowledge, and skills. The course requires listening to podcast episodes, attending integrative seminars, reflective journaling, and completing a self-evaluation analysis paper. The team is interested in the innovative use of a podcast for content delivery, as well as the effect on student growth and commitment to social justice around race issues. The team ultimately hopes to develop coursework on race, discrimination, and oppression issues for undergraduate students guided by this study for integration into the curriculum.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><strong>Effectiveness of Disciplinary-Decoupled Mathematical Reasoning</strong> — A team led by Kathleen Hoffman (Mathematics and Statistics) will decouple the foundational proof-writing skills from the disciplinary course of real analysis, Math 301, and develop a new course in Mathematical Reasoning that will focus on  fundamental skill development in the area of proofs in order to increase success in Math 301 and upper level mathematics courses. Much of the material taught in the lower level mathematics courses is “calculational” in nature and does not prepare students for the theorem-proof based classes at the upper level. As a result, in the “bridge” class to the upper level courses, Math 301, students are required to learn the foundational skills of proof writing at the same time they master the disciplinary topic of real analysis. The team will collaborate with an active researcher in mathematics education to study course effectiveness with an approach that includes active learning and contemporary pedagogical techniques.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><strong>IMPLEMENTATION &amp; RESEARCH AWARD (Fall 2018)</strong></span></div><div><span><strong><br></strong></span></div><div><span><strong>Development and evaluation of a supplemental hands-on social statistics training materials using the open source application – R Commander</strong> — A multidisciplinary team led by Takashi Yamashita (Sociology, Anthropology, and Health Administration and Policy) will develop ready-to-use supplemental social statistics training materials with the open source statistics application, R Commander. Students’ lack of statistical analytical/reasoning skills, often referred to as the “quantitative gap,” has been a serious concern in social science programs. This project combines two known strategies for improving learning outcomes as well as students’ attitudes toward statistics: development of teaching materials focusing on concepts rather than the mathematics and increasing opportunities for students to practice statistical analysis.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><strong>SEED AWARD (Fall 2018)</strong></span></div><div><span><strong><br></strong></span></div><div><span><strong>Competitive active learning games for inclusive computer science classrooms</strong>— Benjamin Johnson (Computer Science and Electrical Engineering) will create competitive active learning exercises as hands-on games to allow students to practice abstract skills. While many of the abstract concepts covered in high level computer science classes are easy to grasp from an explanation, they require a great deal of practice before they can be intuitively understood by students.           <div class="html-content"><p><span>This semester Event &amp; Conference Services is rolling out a series of Event Planning Roundtables!  We wanted to provide a space where student organizations with similar missions and interests can come together to plan and execute events for the Spring 2020 semester based on the timeline for SGA Finance Board budget proposals in tandem with the Large Scale Event Planning Timeline.   <Title>Researcher of the Week: Maya Mueller</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Say hello to Maya Mueller, a URA Scholar and Mathematics major, who will graduate in 2020!<div><br></div><div><p><strong><span>Title of your research project: </span></strong><strong><span></span></strong></p><p><em><span>“</span></em><em><span>Comparing Predictive Data Assimilation Methods on S-I-R Epidemic Forecasts</span></em><em><span>”</span></em><em><span></span></em></p><p><span> </span></p><p><strong><span>Describe your project:</span></strong><span><span></span></span></p><p><strong><span> </span></strong><span><span>My objectives are to compare two statistical tracking methods, specifically the </span></span><span><span>Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) </span></span><span><span>and the Ensemble Optimal Statistical Interpolation (EnOSI) method, to see which one more accurately predicts the spread of a S-I-R epidemic model for airborne infectious diseases.</span></span><strong><span></span></strong></p><p><span><span> </span></span></p><p><strong><span>Who is your mentor(s) for your project? </span></strong><strong><span>Why did you choose them?</span></strong></p><p><span>I took Dr. Sousedik’s Math 341 (Computational Methods) class. Dr. Sousedik teaches in a way that I don’t feel like I just learned the textbook material, but rather a better comprehension of mathematical logic and problem solving methods in general, so I knew Dr. Sousedik would be a perfect research mentor for me. My advisor also was invaluable for steering me in the right direction for who to ask for research opportunities. </span><span></span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><strong><span>How did you become interested in this project?</span></strong><span><span></span></span></p><p><span>I’ve always been interested in classes that involved math modeling or data prediction, particularly when the variables dealt with demographic data. When Dr. Sousedik proposed a research topic about statistical tracking for epidemic models, I was very enthusiastic as the topic encapsulated all of my favorite math concepts. </span><span></span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span><span> </span></span></p><p><strong><span>What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?</span></strong><strong><span> </span></strong><span><span></span></span></p><p><strong><span> </span></strong><span><span>There isn’t a website or a book that tells you clearly how to write the code for your program, or how to adapt an equation to the problem, so there were many hours where Dr. Sousedik and I just had to work things out on pen and paper, or invent a new way of dealing with an error from scratch. It can be unsettling to think there isn’t one right answer to a problem, but I was left with insight to how researchers apply math to real world problems. </span></span><strong><span></span></strong></p><p><span><span> </span></span></p><p><strong><span>What has been the most rewarding part?</span></strong><span><span></span></span></p><p><strong><span> </span></strong><span><span>When I first started the research, the related studies I read seemed at times like another language, but after some effort and time I realized I was capable of understanding and applying mathematical concepts that were incomprehensible a few months ago. This research opportunity gave me confidence in my potential to have a STEM career in the future. </span></span><span><span></span></span></p><p><span><span> </span></span></p><p><strong><span>How will you disseminate your research?</span></strong><span><span></span></span></p><p><span> </span><span>I intend to submit the research paper to the UMBC review and the SIAM Undergraduate Research Online. Ideally, our research will add enough novelty to existing methods to lead to a regular research journal publication. </span><span></span></p><p><span><span> </span></span></p><p><strong><span><br></span></strong></p><p><strong><span>What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?</span></strong><span><span> </span></span><span><span></span></span></p><p><span><span>I would advise any student getting involved in undergraduate research to speak with the faculty in their department. The professors and advisors will more than likely be willing to go the extra mile to make any ideas for projects you have a reality. </span></span><span><span></span></span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><strong><span>What are your career goals?</span></strong><strong><span></span></strong></p><p><span>After more research experience, I ultimately want to apply mathematical models to the planning of urban infrastructure.
