Intern of the Week: Shrijana Khanal for Economics!

Major(s)/Minor(s): Economics

Current Class Level: Junior

Work Term: Summer 2019

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or
research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

This summer, I interned at The Brookings
Institution, a think-tank in Washington, D.C. that conducts research in the
social science field focusing on economics, foreign policy, governance,
metropolitan policy, and the global economy. I was part of the Global Economy
and Development program at Brookings. I worked as an intern under Senior Fellow
John McArthur to conduct research, collect and analyze data regarding how
powerful Canada is, in eight categories (Economic resources, Military
capability, Resilience, Future resources, Diplomatic influence, Economic
relationships, Defence networks, and Cultural influence) through the published
work of the Lowy Institute Asia Power Index. I was able to replicate the Lowy
Institute Asia’s methodology to calculate Canada's power score and finished a
10-page report, which detailed my research and the data mining process. At the
internship, I also collected data for the Southeast Asia Korea US Aid Project.
Lastly, I helped organize and plan the Brookings Blum Roundtable, an annual
forum for global leaders such as John Allen and Madeleine Albright to explore
various facets of global poverty with a focus on how technology and innovation
          promotes economic growth.

Describe the process of obtaining your position.
When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about the position
through different outlets: the Sondheim Scholars Program, Dr. Mitch (the
department chair of the Economics Department at UMBC), and the Career Center. I
applied through myUMBC, submitting my resume, transcript, cover letter, and
writing sample around March. Afterwards, I completed a phone call interview
with Brookings, which went well. Weeks later, I received an email instructing
me to complete a background check and submit two letters of recommendation.
Then, I finally got the offer letter!

What have you enjoyed the most about your
          position or organization?

This internship has a very
special place in my heart because it revealed the power of data and ignited my
passion for data science and statistics. I became exposed to the power of big
data and how I can combine my interest in economics and math. On a personal
note, the other thing I enjoyed the most about my internship was the
connections I made with my supervisor and my fellow interns. My supervisor was
a great mentor who helped me become a better writer, a better researcher, and a
better learner. He gave me a lot of insight into the directions that I could take
my career. The friends that I made at the internship will remain in my life
forever because we all learned a lot from each other and supported each other’s
goals. And finally, living in the heart of our nation’s capital was a
life-changing experience. D.C. is so diverse and I hope to work there one day!

How do you believe you have made an impact
          through your work?

At the beginning of my internship, I was feeling
somewhat discouraged because I could not see the big picture of my project.
However, through the amazing mentorship of my supervisor and the connections I
fostered with the other interns, I was able to see the impact of my work by
talking more about my research with others and seeing other indexes like the
Global Hunger Index or the Human Development Index, which portrayed similar
work. Through my research about Canada, my supervisor will be able to see the
strengths and weaknesses in Canada's power, which will help dissect Canada's
role in the US-China Trade war.

What advice would you give to another student
who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would tell everyone to network, no matter how
uncomfortable it may make you feel.

And to remember that the 9AM-5PM lifestyle might
take you a while to adjust to; therefore, prioritizing self-care is just as
important as focusing on your professional growth.

This is a tremendous loss for our community, the State of Maryland, and our country.

Congressman Cummings showed the nation how to lead with both authenticity and dignity. He represented Baltimore and Maryland masterfully. We know he cared deeply about us, and he understood the power of education to transform lives.

Congressman Cummings was born, raised, and lived in Baltimore, and his dedication to the city he loved was evident in everything he did. Cummings began his distinguished career as an attorney, then served the people of Baltimore in the Maryland House of Delegates, where he became the first African-American Speaker Pro Tem. He was elected to represent Maryland’s Seventh District in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996, and he represented this district with integrity and passion.

For more than two decades, we have deeply appreciated the support Congressman Cummings has offered to students and families—at UMBC and across our state. University System of Maryland Board Chair Linda Gooden and Chancellor Robert L. Caret have also shared their reflections on Congressman Cummings’ incredible dedication to the State of Maryland.
Today is the 2nd annual International Pronouns Day!

<Tagline>recognizing the dignity of another human being</Tagline>

The International Pronoun Day campaign encourages everyone of any gender to share their pronouns on social media as a way to celebrate and support the day.

Pronouns are terms we use to describe ourselves in the third person in place of our name. These can include:

• he/him/his

• she/her/hers

• they/them/theirs

• gender-neutral pronouns, such as ze/hir/hirs

Everyone has the right to be addressed by the name and pronouns that correspond to their gender identity. For many - though not all - people who are trans, a shift in pronouns is an affirming part of the transition process and can have positive health outcomes. It can help a trans person and the people in their lives start to see them as their affirmed gender. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns, otherwise known as misgendering, particularly affects trans & gender nonconforming people and can be devastating. Using the right pronouns is a critical step in acknowledging the humanity of trans and gender nonconforming individuals.

Sadly, anti-trans violence is on the rise and disproportionately affects trans women and femmes of color. It is our shared responsibility to make sure that the most vulnerable members of our communities are respected, supported and feel safe. Sharing your pronouns, regardless of your gender, normalizes the practice so it’s not just on transgender and non-binary people to do it. In solidarity, you can also add your pronouns to your email signature and social media profiles year-round. Sharing pronouns might seem like such a small thing to do if your pronouns align with the gender identity you were assigned at birth, but it can be life-changing to someone who constantly has to deal with being misgendered.

Respecting people’s pronouns is an important part of making UMBC a safer, more inclusive and supportive community. International Pronouns Day seeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace. It’s really just about recognizing the dignity of another human being.

For more information or to pick up your own pronoun buttons come visit us at The Mosaic or join us later today for Bagels and Banter Pop-Up #1.

For more information on Mosaic LGBTQA+ centered events, please email Heidy George, Program Associate for Student Diversity and Inclusion at hmg@umbc.edu, or mosaic@umbc.edu.

In Reflection: Indigenous Peoples Day and Columbus Day

<Tagline>The historical erasure of Indigenous People in America</Tagline>

This holiday has been celebrated for over 30 years, South Dakota was the first state to do so in 1987.

But why not Columbus Day?

For centuries, Christopher Columbus has been celebrated in the United States as the person who discovered the New World in 1492. However, this is both wrong and erases the dark history that still impacts the Indigenous community today. The truth is that Columbus was not the first European explorer to discover the Americas. Additionally, he was responsible for the brutal treatment and slaughtering of countless native people, including children. 400 years later, in 1892, Columbus Day was first recognized in school systems across the nation, despite the fact that Columbus never set foot on U.S. soil in his four voyages to the New World.

So, how did Columbus become an American Icon?

During the war of Independence, American revolutionaries looked for a figure to symbolize the rebellious nature of the war, ignoring the brutality against Indigenous people. Italian immigrants in the coming decades would further celebrate him as a hero who shared both their Italian and Catholic identities in a time where these identities were being marginalized. Since then, much of Indigenous history has been omitted from history books.

Why does it matter?

Indigenous People have continued to be erased from American history, and are continually ripped away from their lands and their families for the benefit of colonization and westward expansion. They have been used as mascots for Major League Sport teams, carelessly reduced to caricatures of their culture.

“So if Columbus was a bad person, how can Italians celebrate their heritage?”

There is nothing inherently bad about celebrating any culture. However, we should all reflect on and reevaluate who we cherish as our idols. Christopher Columbus is only one part of the vibrant contributions of Italian Americans. There are many other ways to celebrate heritage while being thoughtful about the impact on other communities.

What should I do as a non-Native person?

Although we should not speak for Native people and their experiences, we should be aware of ways we can help elevate their voices and include them in our conversations. Do we include them in discussions for people of color, or do we default to the other large panethnic groups (i.e. Black/Africana, Latinx/a/o, Asian and Pacific Islanders)? Are we considering inclusive procedures to respect their spiritual and cultural practices, such as smudging? These are just a few examples on how we can move the needle to a more inclusive society.

Upcoming Indigenous Centered Events

November 5th - Mundo Lingo: More Than A Word Film Screening

December 5th - How to Be A Better Ally?: Local Indigenous Communities

For more information on Indigenous centered events, please email Carlos Turcios and Erin Waddles Coordinators for Student Diversity and Inclusion at carlos6@umbc.edu, waddles@umbc.edu, or mosaic@umbc.edu.

Applying to Grad School

<Tagline>Applying to grad school does not have to be so scary</Tagline>

As a second-year grad student in the Public Policy department at UMBC, I remember clearly applying to grad school and all of the anxieties that came with it. It doesn’t have to be so scary. With a little confidence in yourself and plenty of preparation, you can make applying to grad school as stress-free as possible. In addition to this blog post, consider going to the Grad School 101 workshop the Career Center is hosting on October 17th in the Skylight lounge from 4 pm to 8 pm. You must register to get in, but it is a free conference for all UMBC students that are considering applying for grad school. More information here. Also, we have a graduate school guide available on our website!

The first step in applying to grad school is to do your research. What kind of school are you looking for? Do you need to take standardized tests beforehand? If so, which tests? Looking for the right grad school is very similar to looking for your undergrad. What programs are you interested in, is the school the right environment for you, are they nearby or will you need to relocate? These are the questions you should ask yourself when looking for your school. Once you’ve found your school, familiarize yourself with the required documents and applications that the school asks for.

For example, when I was applying to grad school through UMBC’s BA/MPP Accelerated Learning program, I didn’t need to take standardized tests to apply. Medical schools, however, will likely require the MCAT. So, knowing what you need to start is the most important first step. Make a list! Don’t scramble at the last minute to gather everything you need. You should also consider reaching out to the faculty and staff in your program of choice, ask for information, scout for a potential mentor you can connect with, and become informed of how the program is run.

The next step is to consider your letters of recommendation. Choose the mentors and faculty that you feel will give you a good recommendation and connect with them at least a year in advance. Discuss your school choices and programs with them. Be sure to bring a copy of your unofficial transcript and your resume to these meetings. Take advantage of the Career Center to polish that resume! If they agree to write a recommendation letter for you, give them the due dates that their letters should be mailed or emailed by and to whom they are sending them. Be sure to send a reminder a few days before and always follow up with a thank you letter!

When it’s time to apply, prepare for, and take your standardized tests with plenty of time to take them over again. Gather your resume, official transcripts, and personal statement (the Career Center helps with those too!), fill out any online applications and finalize your application. Be sure to stay consistent, use the same legal name on all documents, triple-check for errors, and be knowledgeable of where you’re sending your applications.

Finally, take the leap. Send your documents, test scores, and completed applications to the schools you’ve chosen.
