The Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities is pleased to announce its 2018-19 research fellows, lead investigator, Dr. Susan Sonnenschein, Professor of Psychology, and co-investigator, Dr. Claudia Galindo, Associate Professor of Education, University of Maryland, College Park.

In a multi-year study, Improving Outcomes for Underserved Populations: An Examination of the Literacy Fellows Program, Dr. Sonnenschein and Dr. Galindo will investigate the implementation and effects of the Sherman Center/Shriver Center Literacy Fellows Program (LFP). The LFP is a volunteer program that places UMBC undergraduate students in early childhood classrooms to support young children’s literacy and language development. The mixed methods study will address the following research questions:

How is the LFP implemented? Does implementation vary across classrooms and/or schools? And, if so, why?

What are the challenges faced by the teachers and volunteers in implementing the LFP?

What are the literacy outcomes for children who participated in the LFP?

Are the potential benefits from the LFP comparable across different groups of children (e.g., English learners, children who start school "not ready" in reading) or do certain groups benefit more than others?

The Sherman Center award will allow Drs. Sonnenschein and Galindo to advance the Center’s work while also contributing to existing research on the role of community volunteers and school-university partnerships in improving young students’ educational experiences and outcomes. Please join us in congratulating them.

The Sherman Center request for proposals for the 2019-20 funding cycle will be announced in September 2019 and proposals will be due in January 2020.
Teresa Lupinek Announces Retirement

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

After more than 35 years of service to UMBC, Executive Administrative Assistant to the President Teresa Lupinek has announced she will retire, effective April 1, 2019. Please join us in celebrating her career and outstanding service to the UMBC community at a reception on Wednesday, March 6, 4-5:30 p.m. in the Library Gallery. Light refreshments will be available.

Throughout her career at UMBC, Ms. Lupinek has approached each of her roles with incredible professionalism, integrity, and poise. She has worked in several key administrative positions since joining the UMBC community in 1984, starting in the Biology Department and moving to the Career Center shortly after. An integral member of the Career Center team, Ms. Lupinek was responsible for all business services and office manager duties for the growing department, including management and training of student workers and support staff. Her attention to detail and strong background in art and design led to the expansion of her role to include handling the design and print production of invitations and marketing materials for high-profile Career Center events and job fairs.

In 2012, she served as interim executive administrative assistant to the Provost’s Office before advancing to the role of executive administrative assistant to the president. Using her extensive experience in office management and strong business acumen, Ms. Lupinek excelled in supporting the President's Office with scheduling and the creation of meeting briefings and agendas in a highly demanding, fast-paced environment. In collaboration with colleagues, she helped introduce several technologies to streamline elements of the office, making it more efficient and organized.

Ms. Lupinek also was very active in supporting and representing the campus community. She worked with campus leaders to recognize non-exempt staff as part of the UMBC Plan of Organization, resulting in the creation of the Non-Exempt Excluded Staff Senate shared governance group. In addition, she served as a member of the University Staff Development Committee, where she helped shape professional development programs for community members. She also served on the Financial Advisory Board and was an important voice in the implementation of PeopleSoft.

Outside of UMBC, Ms. Lupinek continually practiced her passion of art. She taught calligraphy and exhibited mixed media art in juried art shows through the Baltimore Women's Art Community. Her work was included in the "Her Hands" art exhibition and displayed in UMBC’s Library Gallery. A gifted calligrapher, she hand-lettered invitations for President Ronald Reagan's second inauguration through her involvement in the Howard County Calligraphers' Guild.

Over the past seven years I have had the distinct pleasure of working with Ms. Lupinek each day. She regularly goes above and beyond the requirements of her position to find ways of supporting others. Her kindness and collaborative spirit are an inspiration to us all and reflect the values and culture of our wonderful UMBC community. Ms. Lupinek will be greatly missed as a colleague and a friend. I hope you will join me in expressing our thanks for all she has done for the UMBC community.

President Freeman Hrabowski

Intern of the Week: Sean Jordan for Mathematics!

<Tagline>Check out his internship with Johns Hopkins APL</Tagline>

Name:Sean Jordan

Internship, Co-op or Research Site:Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory

Position Title: Software Engineering Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s):Mathematical Statistics Major, Computer Science / Judaic Studies Minor

Work Term:Summer 2018, Winter 2019

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

At my internship, I work to develop computer algorithms for a graph analytics platform that helps to detect anomalies in big data. In the past, I wrote code in Java that helped researchers analyze a biopharmaceutical dataset that dealt with patients who are suffering from schizophrenia, in the hopes that better data analysis tactics could help determine which single nucleotide polymorphisms correlated most heavily with the disease. Currently, I am writing code that helps analyze data taken from NAVAIR flights in order to help determine the cause of certain cases of hypoxia and other illnesses experienced when pilots embark on flights.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I first heard about the possibility of an internship with the Applied Physics Laboratory from my grandfather, who worked there in the past. In the spring of my junior year of high school, I applied to their ASPIRE high school internship program, and luckily got accepted. After completing the internship during my senior year of high school, I got hired back as a college intern for the summer, and have been going back between semesters ever since.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I have really enjoyed meeting and networking with coworkers that have master's and doctorate level experience in the fields that I am interested in. I have been able to gain valuable insight from them regarding the undergraduate and graduate college experience required to work at such a place as the Applied Physics Laboratory. I have also thoroughly enjoyed working alongside the full-time staff to solve challenging problems that require innovative solutions. The Applied Physics Laboratory also has a variety of events geared specifically at interns, so my experience was filled with fun activities that made me feel like I belonged there.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I think that I have written long-lasting code that researchers at the Applied Physics Laboratory can use for years to come on multiple other projects. I have also helped synthesize new datasets and use them to draw significant conclusions, which helps further the missions of the projects that I was working on. Additionally, I believe that I have brought positivity and enthusiasm to the workplace, which has brightened my coworkers' moods.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Don't be dissuaded if you find out that your internship isn't what you thought it was. Give it your all anyways, and if you don't like it, move on to a different career focus. Internships are as much about finding what you DON'T like as they are about finding what you DO like.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
