Update on Armed Robbery of UMBC Student

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

I am writing to follow up on the campus alert sent earlier this week about the robbery of a student at knifepoint between Commons Drive and Administration Drive. This incident naturally creates anxiety, and I want to reassure you UMBC Police takes every incident seriously, and this crime is being fully investigated.

In instances such as this, UMBC Police works with our partners in Student Affairs, including Residential Life and Off-Campus Student Services, to ensure that students who have been the victims of crime are connected with any and all services they may need.

This type of incident is unusual for our campus. Armed robberies on our campus increased from zero in 2017 to three in 2018. While the number of robberies is relatively low, one crime is too many. We investigate all crime reports that we receive. As a result of the investigation into a robbery on campus in September 2018 involving an online sales transaction, we have identified a suspect and will be filing charges.

We are working to increase UMBC Police visibility on our campus, and our partners in Facilities Management have projects underway to improve lighting, including:

Installing new lighting on both sides of Commons Drive;

Installing new lighting on the inside of Hilltop Circle from the bus stop near Administration Drive to Hilltop Road; and

Installing new lighting in the area between Commons Drive and Administration Drive, where the incident occurred earlier this week.

Safety Tips:

UMBC Police provides an escort service for anyone who feels unsafe when walking on or near campus. If you would like an escort, please call 410-455-5555. If you observe suspicious activity or behavior, contact the police immediately by calling 410-455-5555.

The UMBC Counseling Center provides free confidential services for UMBC students. If you are in need of counseling services or would like to learn more about available services, please call 410-455-2472 or visit the Counseling Center’s website.

The UMBC Police Station is a safe trade location. If you are going to buy or sell items online and make face-to-face transactions, you can make a safe trade by meeting the individual(s) at the UMBC Police Station.

We encourage members of the UMBC community to keep themselves safe. However, please recognize that conduct violations and criminal acts are never the victim’s fault. UMBC students, faculty, staff members, or visitors who choose to violate relevant policies and laws are solely responsible for their actions. University authorities will make every effort to sanction individuals who violate those policies and laws.

Paul Dillon, UMBC Chief of Police

March 1 session with sexual misconduct consultant team

After a brief introduction to Shipper and Scricca and their work on campus, participants will be invited to share ideas, experiences, and concerns with the consultants in order to inform their work at UMBC. This will not be a traditional Q&A format. Rather, the consultants will be listening for direct input from the UMBC community.

For those who prefer not to share publicly or are unable to attend the information gathering session, you may use this anonymous Google form and your feedback will be shared with Shipper and Scricca.

Throughout the spring semester, Shipper and Scricca will review current university processes, policies, procedures, and practices regarding sexual misconduct. This effort will have a broad scope, beyond the specifics of Title IX alone, also including models for prevention and training for students, faculty, and staff, and best practices for providing support to those impacted by sexual violence. Their recommendations to UMBC will be presented to the campus in May.

Thank you for your commitment to Retriever Courage and for the input and suggestions you are sharing to inform this work. While some important actions are already underway, this work is just the beginning. There are many different ways to be involved, such as joining an advisory committee, participating in educational workshops and training, becoming an advocate for survivors, and committing to being an observant, vocal community member.

We encourage those who have observed or experienced sexual violence/misconduct to seek support as needed at any time.
Rise to the Top and Become a Student Leader!

Holding a student leadership position provides you with an opportunity
to make a meaningful impact in the UMBC community.

As a student leader, you’ll be able to gain valuable professional
experience (that you’ll be able to add to your resume), develop new friendships
    and make great college memories!

While there are countless ways to get involved in student
leadership roles, including holding positions in student organizations, we’d
like to highlight some unique “peer advisor” positions on campus that will give
you the opportunity to share your experiences and wisdom with new students and
students in transition, and play an important role in supporting student success.

Orientation Peer Advisor
(OPA) – Be a part of a close-knit team of students who welcome
new students and their families to campus during the summer and winter terms
    during New Student Orientation.

Welcome Week Leaders
(Woolies) – As part of the Woolie team you will serve as a resource to all
incoming students during Welcome Week, supporting students in their transition
to campus and helping them connect to events and upcoming opportunities.
Application for 2019 will be available in early March!

IHU Peer Facilitator
    – IHU Peer Facilitators are an integral part of all Introduction to an Honor’s
University (IHU) courses, assisting instructors in course preparation, lesson
implementation and serving as a resource to students throughout their time in
the course. Application for 2019 will be available in early March!

OAPA Peer Advisor
    – *Shameless plug for our office, the Office for Academic &
    Pre-Professional Advising!*

We will be taking applications in late February/March from
students interested in helping to staff our front desk, providing informal
advising to students, and assisting in the planning and implementation of
various office-sponsored events, primarily targeting students who are exploring
majors or who are interest in allied health professions.

Undergraduate
Admissions A-Team – Do you have an interest in sharing your UMBC
spirit with prospective and incoming students? The Office of Undergraduate
Admissions has a variety of positions for students interested in promoting UMBC
and helping students navigate the admissions process.

Resident Student Association (RSA)
    – Be a part of a student-run, representative organization that works alongside
Residential Life staff to advocate for the needs and well-being of students
living on campus, as well as encouraging students to engage in their housing
    community.

Transfer
Student Network (TSN) Leaders – TSN Leaders will assist prospective, incoming, and current
transfer students with their transition into UMBC by leading workshops and
other programs, and serving as the face of OCSS at the front desk. Application
will be available at the end of the semester via UMBC Works!
