All-Gender Restrooms

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

As a campus community that is committed to inclusion and diversity, one of our shared values is having respect for the dignity of every member of our UMBC community. All members of our community and visitors to our campus should have access to safe restroom facilities that are configured and located in such a manner that no one has to be late to class, meetings, or campus events or to walk long distances across campus to find a restroom. Now is the time when we must put our values into action by moving forward on our commitment to making all-gender restroom facilities more widely available at UMBC.

In collaboration with the University Steering Committee and an All-Gender Restroom Steering Committee that will be comprised of students, faculty, and staff, including representatives from UMBC’s LGBTQ community, campus leadership will develop guidelines and implementation plans for moving towards this goal. These guidelines and implementation plans will apply to conversion of existing facilities, renovations, and new construction. This consultation process and resulting actions will enable us to move forward with appropriate rapidity, understanding that we will learn as we go and make adjustments as needed, to ensure that these changes meet the needs of our campus community.

In 2018, we completed designating all single-user restrooms on campus as all-gender restrooms. Currently there are 41 single-user all-gender restrooms in administration, academic, and student life facilities open to students and visitors, 16 single-user all-gender restrooms adjacent to shared areas in residence halls, and additional single-user all-gender restrooms located in buildings or areas of buildings not typically open to the public. A map highlighting public all-gender restrooms is available here. In addition, UMBC Facilities Management is continuing efforts to add more single-user all-gender restrooms in the University Center and the Retriever Learning Center in the Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery. And the new Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building, which is scheduled to open in time for the Fall 2019 semester, will have one single-user and two multi-user all gender restrooms.

Our next step will be to expand the availability of all-gender restrooms by identifying opportunities to designate existing multi-user restrooms as all-gender restrooms in campus buildings that currently lack single-user all-gender restrooms. Beginning this semester, we will develop initial guidelines to designate a small number of multi-user restrooms as all-gender restrooms. These guidelines and related implementation plans will serve as the starting point for assessing the best process for moving forward with this important effort.

We are committed to making all-gender restrooms available across our campus. We invite you to provide input or ask questions. If you would like to volunteer to be part of the process, please contact the All-Gender Restroom Steering Committee at agr@umbc.edu.

President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous

Researcher of the Week: Scott Sainz

  <Tagline>Lights! Theatre! Music!</Tagline>

Scott Sainz is a Theatre major, specializing in Design and Production, who will graduate in December, 2019.

Title of your research project: Alternative Theatrical Lighting Control System

Describe your project: I am researching a lighting control system called GrandMA2. The GrandMA2 is mostly used to program lights for concerts and other live performances, rather than Theatre.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project?

My mentor for my project is Mr. Adam Mendelson, Lecturer in Lighting and Sound Design, Theatre. I have had classes with my mentor previously. I chose him, because he understands the technical aspects of lighting systems. He is also hands-on with his students and takes interest in their development and projects. I knew he would be committed to my project, inspire me, push me to work harder, and be able to give quality feedback on my progress.

How did you become interested in this project?

My interest for lighting has existed my entire life. In 5th grade I wrote to myself that "I want to do light shows for a living". I have been in pursuit of my childhood dream since. Once I found out about the GrandMA2 system, I knew I had to learn it to advance my dreams to the next stage.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

I have had a lot trouble estimating how long things will take. By its nature research is doing something you have never done before. I would plan for something to take 2 hours, for example, but in reality, it would take 6. This would be difficult when I would try to plan my schedule. As a researcher, I did not expect the overwhelming support I would receive. Many times, I received support from people and companies, only through sharing that I am researcher. The best example was I shared with an usher at a Cirque Du Soleil that I am doing research on lighting and she moved my seat from the last row in the building, to the closest section.

What has been the most rewarding part?

My research took me to different places, one being a lighting conference in Las Vegas. At this conference I was able to sit in on presentations of professionals in the industry who are doing extremely innovative things. This sparked my inspiration and made me want to explore the boundaries of existing technology, and imagine what/ who will be the things/ones to break those boundaries. I also was able to see shows that feature the highest level of lighting design. These sparked my interest and were extremely rewarding to spectate.

How will you disseminate your research (URCAD presentation, conference, publication, etc?)

I will be sharing my research on February 15th. I am hosting a public light show, as well as programming lights for a live band. This exercises two different strengths this system has over others. The console has the ability to easily program to music in "timecode" while also being able to be used for live playback with a band "busking". After the show I am hosting a master class about my research and the GrandMA2 for other interested students, or members of the public.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

The best advice I could give to interested students is to just start. I will process information in my head for a long time, but it wasn't until I started to ask questions and find people who share my interests that my research began to take off. Everyone's research will be different in many ways, and in my case I had many challenges. Every obstacle has the potential to be another triumph, but you will never know unless you start. I found that setting deadlines would require me to get started on things promptly. I broke my research into many incremental deadlines, the times I stuck to the deadlines I was successful; the times I wasn't my research was less fruitful.

What are your career goals?

I plan to take the information I received from my research and apply it to my career. I now have a level of proficiency in a lighting system that is incredibly popular, but specialized. The skills I received from my research are in high demand and I have many different ways that I can use those skills in my future work.

** Come see Scott's light show on

    Friday, February 15th, 2019
Proscenium Theater in PAHB - Please no food/ drink in the Theater
    Doors will open at 6:50pm
Light show will start promptly at 7:00pm with doors closing

2019-2020 Computer Replacement Initiative

This memorandum is to announce the Computer Replacement Initiative (CRI) for the Academic Year 2019-2020. CRI is being extended across the campus to all faculty and staff; each division has developed the criteria to be used in that division. This continues to be an important initiative as we strive to provide our faculty and staff with the technology tools needed to carry out our academic mission. Funds available for the CRI continue to be limited and consequently we anticipate that we will not be able to fund all the meritorious applications.

Within Academic Affairs, the procedures for this year’s CRI will be the same as last year’s and we will also maintain the same subsidy levels as before. Specifically, the subsidy for a laptop is $1,000 and the subsidy for a desktop is $600. The goal for this differential is to promote the purchase of laptops by faculty and staff based on the advantages provided by laptops in the areas of academic continuity, sustainability, portability and teaching with technology as we continue to enhance our pool of classrooms. Those wishing to purchase a different configuration may apply the subsidy amount toward the purchase of a customized computer configuration. All computers should minimally be purchased with a three-year warranty.

In order to ensure delivery and installation is completed in advance of the start of Fall 2019 semester, the schedule for this cycle of the CRI is again rather compressed. Ordering of the new machines will occur in early June 2019 with installations planned for completion by the start of the Fall 2019 semester. Given the success achieved during the previous years with a single procurement and mass distribution of PCs, we will continue with a similar program this year. As in the past, we will have several “standard” configurations included in this procurement. The minimum and recommended configurations for a desktop and laptops can be found at:

Recommended Technology for Faculty and Staff

The CRI has always required cost sharing of new computers. As indicated above, we will provide a subsidy of $600 for a desktop computer and $1,000 for a laptop computer.

We will place a bulk purchase with Dell so machines can be delivered and installed in advance of the start of the Fall 2019 semester. Each individual will have the option of using the bulk purchase or ordering their customized unit from either Dell or another vendor. I encourage you to participate in this bulk purchase plan given the benefits we have seen in the past. Your department will be charged a one-time amount depending on which option you should select. The options available and the exact department cost share for each option will be announced in March as soon as we have such information from Dell.

The timeline for this year’s CRI is the following:

February 11, 2019: Announcement sent to campus

March 29, 2019: Deadline for submitting the CRI application via the DoIT web form

April 12, 2019: Notification to chairs/directors of award recommendations from the review committee

April 19, 2019: Feedback from chairs/directors on the award recommendations

April 24, 2019: Review by the deans of the awards list

May 1, 2019: Awards are announced

May 31, 2019: Deadline for awardees to make their computer options selection

Early June 2019: Computer order will be placed

The application form is available on the web http://umbc.edu/go/cri. First priority for funding is given to a requester with a computer that falls below the minimum standard and who has explained the need for a new computer under the mandatory narrative on the form. If you have questions about the CRI or these instructions, please contact Vice Provost Moreira at x56576 (or Executive Assistant, Susan Mocko at x56577).

Career Fair Guide

  <Tagline>Why everyone should come!</Tagline>

Hey everyone! If you’ve been paying any attention, you know that UMBC’s Spring Career Fair is this Friday. And if you haven’t, now you know. It’ll be from 11:30-3:30 in the RAC. Be sure to stop by dressed in business professional and with a few copies of your resume. If you want a longer guide, check out my post from last Fall on what to do before, during, and after the fair. . But this time I’m going to talk about something a little different: why each and every one of you should come to the Career Fair.

If you want a job or internship the answer is kind of obvious. Come apply for jobs! But before you do, make sure you have a good resume. We have online resources on our website, or you can come in and see us in person. Make an appointment or come to drop in hours any weekday from 2 pm - 4 pm. Also look at the Career Fair directory online and decide which companies you want to target. The day of the fair, make it a priority to go to their booths first.

If you have a job or internship look at the Career Fair as an opportunity to practice networking with very few repercussions. You don’t have to worry about getting a job, so a lot of the pressure is off! See it as a chance to talk with hiring managers and professionals in your field, although be sure to tell them that you aren’t looking for employment at this time. And of course, stop by our LinkedIn head shot booth so your picture looks as good as your experience.

If you don’t feel qualified for a job or internship you’re probably wrong (and I mean that in the nicest way possible). Internships are designed for people with little to no experience. If you’re worried that your resume doesn’t have enough content, come see us at drop-ins! We’ll help you showcase what you have. If you feel like you haven’t learned enough, that's okay too. Most employers don’t expect interns to know much at all! You’ll spend a good portion of your time as an intern learning both technical and professional skills. Come to the fair and check out the employers that will be marked “Freshman Friendly.” They are open to people with less experience and happy to take on an intern and train them to do the job right!
