Networking 101

<Tagline>How to make connections to help with your job search!</Tagline>

According to career specialists, 70-80 percent of jobs are never posted online. This means most jobs are filled through word of mouth or other private communication, otherwise known as a professional network. I don’t know about you, but whenever I’m faced with someone 10-15 years older than me wearing a power suit, I freeze. Everything interesting I’ve ever said or thought flies out of my head. It isn’t optimal. I’ve had to find resources to teach and prepare me for those awkward handshakes and first meetings. It is important to develop your own professional network while you’re in school so that you have contacts to reach out to when you begin looking for an internship and full-time job.

When to Network:

“Networking” sometimes sounds like a special skill that everyone seems to know except you. Actually, networking is pretty basic. It can happen with friends, family, or strangers, at a career event, in the classroom, on the job, or anywhere you run into someone with an interesting career path, similar career interests, or skills you find interesting. Just be approachable, open, and willing to talk about your education, background, and career goals, and you’ll be networking in no time!

How to Network:

Again, networking isn’t a special skill you unlock after you obtain a secret adult card. It's just talking and connecting to people in your field. That being said, there are a few things you can do to prepare for the dreaded question: “So what do you want to do?” First, create a 30-second commercial. We have a guide here on on website. Next, remember that networking is a conversation. Have a few interesting questions to ask the other person about their work or career path. Finally, be yourself. People want to work with people who are friendly and competent at what they do. Show that you know what you’re talking about and how to work in a team, and you’ll be good to go!

Where to Network:
Like I said before, networking can be done anywhere. But, there are a few spaces dedicated to making professional connections. Online, you can join Linkedin. We have a student-alumni group you can participate in, and adding your classmates as professional contacts can’t hurt either. Once a semester, the Career Center hosts a huge Career Fair. Check out our tips on navigating that here. Finally, we have events happening at least once a week, where you can interview alums, meet with company recruiters, or visit corporate offices. Check out our calendar for the comprehensive list!

This new center is the latest result of two years of work to realign the structure within the Division of Student Affairs to support both UMBC’s strategic plan and our divisional priorities.

The Center for Democracy and Civic Life’s launch comes at a critical time for our nation, when our divisions and challenges dominate the news and hope for democracy’s future can seem elusive. The center will work with partners to help students develop knowledge, skills, dispositions, and practices for deep and effective civic involvement in diverse communities. It will generate, inspire, and share innovations in civic and democratic engagement, and support collaborative activity that helps to build thriving civic cultures at UMBC and in communities involved in the center’s work.

David Hoffman joined the UMBC community in 2003. In Campus Life, he guided leadership and engagement initiatives, student organization support, and student government advising. He has led the development and implementation of UMBC’s BreakingGround initiative, which has fostered civic agency and democratic engagement through programs, courses, and partnerships. As a member of the inaugural cohort of American Democracy Project Civic Fellows, David led the development of the influential Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Emergent Theory of Change. She has also served as a key strategist for the UMBC BreakingGround initiative, and written about experiential learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, institutional change, career preparation for community engagement professionals, and graduate students’ civic engagement. Romy has held fellowships with Campus Compact, the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict, and Imagining America. Romy received her UMBC degrees in modern languages and linguistics (B.A.), intercultural communication (M.A.), and language, literacy, and culture (Ph.D.).

Please join me in congratulating David and Romy as they take on these new roles.

Nancy Young, Vice President for Student Affairs

Researcher of the Week: Collin David

<Tagline>Performing music in Sao Paulo, Brazil!</Tagline>

Collin David is a Music Composition major and a merit scholar who will graduate in 2019. With the help of a UMBC Travel Award, he traveled to Sao Paulo, Brazil, for the Sao Paulo Contemporary Composers Festival, to present his original music compositions.

Describe your project: I wrote two pieces of classical music, one for orchestra and one for chamber ensemble. These two pieces were performed and recorded.

Who is your mentor for your project?: Dr. Linda Dusman. Composition Faculty, Music Department.

How did you find your mentor? Why did you choose them?:

She has been my composition teacher/mentor since I came to UMBC in 2016. I chose her because she wrote music that I thought was interesting and that I could learn from.

How did you become interested in this project?:Dr. Dusman made me aware of this opportunity and I submitted an application.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing?:

The hardest part for me was accepting that I will not get perfect recordings or performances. I was hoping for a perfect recording, but although it was good, it was not exactly what I was thinking. The most unexpected thing was the music of the other festival participants. I had certain expectations of what I thought people would be doing, but I was quite far off.

What has been the most rewarding part?:

The most rewarding part was meeting people from all over the world and making connections that will last. The experience of traveling so far away and learning about the culture was also a rewarding experience. I have already begun using things I learned in Brazil in my music.

How will you disseminate your research?:I gave a presentation to the music composition students on October 31.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research/creative work?:

I cannot speak for standard research, but I think music festivals like the one I attended are more beneficial and possibly even necessary for music students, since they help you make important connections and get professional recordings both of which will help further your career. I plan to attend many more festivals in the future.

What are your career goals?:

My goals are to be a proficient musician in multiple instruments and to be a composer of music in many different genres. I also plan to teach music privately as well as potentially at schools from elementary to higher education.

Photo: The photo was taken at the Sao Paulo Composers Festival. Collin is second from right (blue shirt).

Update on sexual violence/misconduct prevention and response

Update on campus initiative for sexual violence/misconduct prevention and response

The UMBC community has opened a vital conversation about sexual violence/misconduct prevention and response on our campus. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni are speaking out and offering recommendations and partnership on these issues. The discussion has expanded to include healthy relationships and community safety and support more broadly. We are listening, and this input is guiding us as we move forward.

In September, President Hrabowski appointed a team to address some immediate needs in response to student concerns, while laying the groundwork to create a process for long-term change. This process has included ongoing meetings with shared governance groups, the We Believe You sexual violence survivors advocacy group, and other groups across the university.

We share below a new structure that is the outcome of this collective discussion as we move into the next phase of our work as a community. This initiative—based on input from shared governance groups and members across the UMBC community—is named Retriever Courage, reflecting our commitment as a campus to make a lasting impact on sexual violence/misconduct prevention and response at UMBC and beyond. Change requires the courage to speak out, to listen, to learn, and to take action. We must fully live our campus values—inclusive excellence, collaboration, innovation, and impact—to make UMBC a safer, more caring living, learning, and working environment for all. A new Retriever Courage website will document our community’s progress in this work and serve as a platform for ongoing communication, and we look forward to sharing it with you tomorrow.

In order to live out our campus values and do this work effectively, it is essential that we carry out this initiative with members of our community whose lives have been impacted by sexual violence, professionals who have dedicated their careers to understanding the nuances of these complex issues, and all interested individuals who are motivated to help work toward a better understanding of these issues on our campus.

Please contact your senate president (see below) to share feedback on the structure and to volunteer. If you are not represented through shared governance, please contact retrievercourage@umbc.edu. As the structure and membership of each group is finalized, it will be updated on the Retriever Courage website.

We encourage those who have observed or experienced sexual violence/misconduct to seek support as needed at any time. There are many resources available on campus and in the community that offer confidential medical support, confidential psychological/emotional support, and interim protective measures (e.g., no-contact orders, housing adjustments, academic concerns). For emergency situations, contact campus police via 410-455-5555 or local police via 911.

Through continued work together, UMBC will become a stronger community, and we know this work will have a lasting impact on campus and beyond. We look forward to hearing your feedback.
