This year’s STRiVE retreat will take place January 7-11, 2019. STRiVE participants will make new friends, learn about themselves, reflect on values and ethics, work in teams to envision contributions they could make at UMBC, and tackle both simulated and real leadership and social change challenges. Past STRiVE participants have gotten deeply involved in campus organizations and initiatives, and have made phenomenal contributions.

STRiVE: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is STRiVE?

STRiVE is an intensive, engaging and exhilarating off-campus leadership retreat (5 days, 4 nights) developed by UMBC to help students become more effective leaders on campus and throughout their lives. STRiVE participants will make new friends, learn about themselves, reflect on values and ethics, work in teams to envision contributions they could make at UMBC, and tackle both simulated and real leadership and social change challenges. The STRiVE experience will include a bonfire, challenge course, games and other fun activities.


Do I have to be an “involved” student to attend STRiVE?

Absolutely not! STRiVE will be helpful to any student regardless of previous involvement or leadership experience. No prior experience is necessary! We are looking for a diverse group of students committed to developing their leadership skills and applying them to create positive change in the campus community. The application asks about campus involvement only to give the STRiVE planning team a sense of the different perspectives participants will bring to the retreat.


When is STRiVE?

The dates for STRiVE will be January 7 - 11, 2019.


Where is STRiVE being held?

STRiVE will be held at Skycroft Conference Center in Middletown, Maryland. Participants will stay in motel-style rooms (sharing a room with 1 other student) and all activities will be held on site. Bus transportation between UMBC and the retreat site will be provided.


How much does it cost to attend STRiVE?

UMBC covers most of the cost of each participant’s attendance. However, there is a participation fee of $100 that helps cover some of the cost of transportation, lodging and food. Money should not be a barrier to attendance, however, and participants will be able to complete a form to request financial assistance.


When is the application due?

Sunday, November 4, 2018.


When will are accepted applicants informed?

Applicants will receive an email in late November with additional details about participating in STRiVE.

We received word this week that representatives from the State Office of Legislative Audits plan to begin their audit of the campus on Wednesday, October 31, 2018.

The auditors will be on campus for approximately six months reviewing records and processes for the period covering March 19, 2015 through October 30, 2018.

To conduct their review, the auditors will be randomly contacting individual departments to review financial records (e.g., purchasing card, payroll, and cash receipt documentation). The Audit Information Sheet is provided as a general guide for your reference in working with the auditors, should you be contacted.

Your cooperation with the auditors in helping to facilitate their reviews is greatly appreciated. I know that everyone continues to work very hard to strengthen operations across the campus, and we welcome the opportunity to work with the legislative auditors to find ways to be even more effective in our work.

Providing references is often a required step in a job or internship application. Asking someone to vouch for you and your work can be intimidating. A lot of times we feel like there isn’t anyone we can ask. However, developing references isn’t as hard as you think it is! Refer to the quick guide below to help you figure out who you can ask for references.


Professional

This is usually the most obvious choice. A previous or current boss always looks great as a reference, provided they have good things to say about you (this is one of many many reasons you should be a team player and avoid alienating bosses during the job or after you leave it). They can speak to your professional ethic and quality of work. But Emily, you might ask, how am I supposed to get a reference from my boss if I’ve never had a boss before? No problem! Just keep reading.


Academic

Most (if not all) professors on campus are happy to write letters of recommendations for students they have worked with. This means that in class, you should be participating. After class, go to office hours with meaningful questions. And of course, do well on their assignments and exams. If you’re working with a professor on their research project, they are also a great person to ask to be a reference. Don’t just think of professors as talking heads standing at the front of a lecture hall and reciting a 100 slide powerpoint. They are professionals in your field of interest with years and years of experience. Take advantage of the opportunity to get to know them and expand your network.


Personal

Ideally, your references would come from a person who knows you in an academic or professional setting. However, sometimes that’s not possible. After you exhaust those two options, turn to personal references. These can be from an organization you volunteered with (if it relates to your major, that is even better) or a mentor you’ve worked with through extracurricular activities. Just be sure they can speak about your work ethic and your professional capabilities and growth.


When listing someone as a reference, always make sure to ask them first! It's never a good thing when your recommender is blindsided by a phone call or email. Check out our new 2018-2019 Career Guide for more information (page 36 will be especially helpful).

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

Following recent press reports of a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) proposal to narrow the federal definition of gender used to enforce equality in education under Title IX, we write to affirm that UMBC remains dedicated to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment for all students and employees.

If implemented, the revised definition could substantially erode protected status under federal civil rights law for approximately 1.4 million people who identify as transgender. We strongly oppose this divisive proposal. Guided by our own institutional values and policies, UMBC will continue to take active measures to prevent and combat all forms of gender- and gender identity-based discrimination. 

The diversity of UMBC’s community and our commitment to inclusive excellence are among our greatest strengths. While we recognize that achieving inclusion is an ongoing process, we will continue to strive to make our campus a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, including transgender people and other members of the LGBTQ community.

We will continue to monitor the status of the HHS proposal and will keep you updated on this and other proposed changes to Title IX that the Administration may release in the coming months.

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

Following recent press reports of a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) proposal to narrow the federal definition of gender used to enforce equality in education under Title IX, we write to affirm that UMBC remains dedicated to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment for all students and employees.

If implemented, the revised definition could substantially erode protected status under federal civil rights law for approximately 1.4 million people who identify as transgender. We strongly oppose this divisive proposal. Guided by our own institutional values and policies, UMBC will continue to take active measures to prevent and combat all forms of gender- and gender identity-based discrimination. 

The diversity of UMBC’s community and our commitment to inclusive excellence are among our greatest strengths. While we recognize that achieving inclusion is an ongoing process, we will continue to strive to make our campus a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, including transgender people and other members of the LGBTQ community.

We will continue to monitor the status of the HHS proposal and will keep you updated on this and other proposed changes to Title IX that the Administration may release in the coming months.

We are also committed to providing information and other supportive resources for members of the UMBC community with particular concerns about civil rights related to gender identity. Resources are available at the following sites:

The University of Chicago Booth School of Business is offering current UMBC undergraduates with an opportunity to apply for a deep immersive experience in research activities in economics.  The program is designed for top undergraduate students with strong quantitative and analytical backgrounds of all majors.  These positions offer a $10,000 Stipend plus Housing.  The program has a rolling admission with an absolute deadline of Friday, December 7th.
