What You Need to Know About Editing Wikipedia

Written by Courtney Hobson, Coordinator in the Dresher Center for the Humanities.

When you need to look up information on the internet, Google is the number one site we typically go to. If you type in “Indigenous Peoples’ Day,” or “Aretha Franklin,” the first result will likely be an article on Wikipedia.

For those of you not in the know, Wikipedia is a free open-source encyclopedia which means that anyone can edit it. Most of the editors consist of academics or hobbyists who, with time, a computer and a steady internet connection, are generating informative articles that are viewed by millions all over the world.

Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon 2015, The Museum of Modern Art, New York/Wikimedia Commons

As one of the top ten visited internet sites in the world, Wikipedia is not merely a tool to record facts; it is helping to shape our collective knowledge. Winston Churchill once remarked that, “history is written by the victors.” Knowing our history is important, but knowing the authors is even moreso. This brings us to editing articles on Wikipedia.

Less than 10% of Wikipedia’s editors identify as cis or trans women and the editors that do identify as women are more likely than men to have their edits reverted.

What does this mean? This means that women are not seen or valued as notable contributors to our society. The statistics are similarly dismal for POC.

Editing Wikipedia is a step towards challenging systemic structures that tell us what information is important enough to know. It is a step that I realized that anyone could take when I attended my first edit-a-thon in 2016 at the Baltimore Museum of Art. The edit-a-thon focused on expanding or creating articles about Black artists. With just 30 minutes of writing and research, I was able to create an short article or stub. I am now one of those hobbyists who edit articles for fun, but I focus on adding content about people from Baltimore, especially Black women.

2016 AfroCROWD Elected Officials Wikipedia editathon/Wikimedia Commons

For the CSJ: Ignite Wikipedia edit-a-thon, we will have a chance to discuss these issues in greater depth, as well as explore resources available through our library. But most importantly, we will inject Wikipedia with a bit of Baltimore and shine a light on figures and events who have shaped our city.

Today is International Coming Out Day!

As part of LGBTQ+ History Month, National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is an annual LGBTQ+ awareness day observed on October 11 (October 12 in some parts of the world). The initial idea was grounded in the feminist and queer liberation spirit of the personal being political, and the emphasis on the most basic form of activism being coming out to family, friends and colleagues, and living life as an openly LGBTQ+-identified person.

Thirty years ago, on the anniversary of the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) first observed National Coming Out Day as a reminder that one of our most basic tools is the power of coming out. One out of every two Americans has someone close to them who identifies gay or lesbian. For transgender people, that number is only one in ten.

Coming out - whether it is as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning - STILL MATTERS. When people know someone who is LGBTQ, they are far more likely to support equality under the law. Beyond that, our stories can be powerful to each other. (Adapted from the Human Rights Campaign, 2018).

Check out this video to understand the coming out process and what you can do as an ally.
Update on Campus Sexual Assault Response/Prevention

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

We are writing to update you on the specific actions our university community is taking to better prevent and respond to sexual assault and keep our campus safe, through the collaborative work of the accountability team, student organizations, academic colleges, and faculty and staff groups. We have already received quite a bit of feedback and recommendations and we will continue to meet with students, faculty, and staff.

We invite you to continue to support this work by sharing your thoughts and ideas. The input and expertise of our community, along with external resources, will help us move forward.

We have developed a scope of work for an outside expert or firm to review all aspects of our sexual misconduct prevention and response policies and training and awareness programs to help determine where we can learn from other institutions’ best practices and evidence-based research. We are also reaching out to national experts to identify potential consultants. Student, faculty, and staff advisory committees will guide this work.

Student leaders led a two-hour tour through UMBC’s main campus with President Hrabowski, members of the accountability team, and representatives from Facilities Management and UMBC Police to see where lighting needs to be improved. The Facilities Management team and police have repaired over 50 fixtures in areas of concern to students. Facilities Management will also add lighting around the Performing Arts and Humanities Building (PAHB), and from the PAHB to the main campus entrance circle, with construction due to begin in January and completion expected by June.

UMBC will issue new campus ID cards that include emergency contact information for quick access by students, faculty, and staff. We anticipate the new cards will be available in the spring.

Mandatory Title IX and sexual misconduct training and education will be required of all faculty, staff, and students, to expand on training efforts already underway. The resources required have been allocated for face-to-face training to complement online education, and we are working with faculty, staff and students to ensure that the training focuses not only on Title IX, but also more broadly on how each of us can support and appropriately care for our fellow community members.

UMBC Police are working with the Division of Information Technology to develop a safety feature on myUMBC that will allow students, faculty, and staff to quickly access emergency contacts and alert Facilities Management about campus lighting or building security problems.

New student resource guides are now posted in residence halls, and we are working with the community to develop additional posters, signs, and other resources for all areas of campus.

Like all U.S. universities, we are also waiting to hear what changes the Department of Education Office for Civil Rights will make concerning how institutions address Title IX issues. We want to be clear that we will continue to take active measures to prevent and address all forms of sex- and gender-related discrimination and violence. We will update the community as more information becomes available.

The safety and wellbeing of our students and our entire community must remain our priority in the long term. This is just the beginning. We will continue to challenge ourselves to do better, and broader and far-reaching improvements must be made. We are deeply humbled to hear the stories and experiences of survivors on our campus and those who care about them. Through your stories and concerns we are learning how we can be better as a campus, which has helped us begin to move forward.

October is Relationship Violence Awareness Month, and we ask members of our university community to consider attending one or more of the trainings and informative workshops available.

We encourage those who have observed or experienced sexual misconduct to seek support as needed at any time. There are many resources available on campus and in the community that offer confidential medical support, confidential psychological/emotional support, and interim protective measures (e.g., no-contact orders, housing adjustments, academic concerns). For emergency situations, contact campus police via 410-455-5555 or local police via 911.

Thank you for your commitment to this work. We will continue to share updates, progress, and ways to stay engaged.

UMBC Accountability Team
We Believe You
Student Government Association
Graduate Student Association

Exams, Homework, and Lectures, Oh my!

    <Tagline>Time Management is a Joke...Or is it?</Tagline>

Written by OAPA Peer Advisor, Malaysia McGinnis, '19

You’ve been warned not to leave the 15-page
research paper for the night before, or to start your homework two hours before
it’s due. Yet, these scenarios often seem like a creative challenge for your
procrastination skills, and it can be tempting to test how well you can
complete assignments at the last minute, despite a professor’s warning.

Though it may be possible to skate by, time
management has the ability to make your life a lot more enjoyable and less
          stressful.

Below are some helpful time management tips to
ensure that you don’t have to skip class, miss assignments and
          meals, or sleep!

1. Build a schedule and
leave time for obstacles (including procrastination)

Create a schedule
so you can tackle each task throughout the week to meet deadlines on time,
          if not early.

Give yourself incentives
for finishing work and make sure these incentives are balanced. Do not
allow yourself to play six hours of Fortnite for completing a small
          homework assignment.

Try to achieve a good
amount of balance. Do not allow one class to take up the majority of your
          time.

2. Keep a consistent
          eating/sleeping schedule

Self-care is very
important. Rest is needed in order to function properly, and
eating the right foods (at the right time) is a part of that equation.

The academic,
social, and other demands should be added around the “self-care”
          parts of your schedule.

3. Keep a consistent
work schedule (If you have a job on or off campus)

Many students are caught
in the cyclical trap of “I need to work to pay tuition, but if I fail my
classes what’s the point in working?” At the end of the day, if you work to pay
for school, school must still be the top priority.

It is tempting to take
extra hours at work to make extra money, but do not let it interfere with
academia; if possible, make your availability clear and upfront to your
employer to ensure you won’t be overworked. Typically 10-20 hours
per week is reasonable for full-time students. You should work on the
lower part of the scale if you have a challenging course schedule.

4. Learn When to Say “No”

Know your priorities and
only take on what you absolutely have time for. This will also give you the
chance to devote a significant amount of time to the things that matter most,
instead of only being able to give a little time to a multitude of commitments
          you’ve made.

In sum, the most important point to remember
when it comes to time management is that it really will make your life easier.
Plan out what you can, leave room for mishaps you cannot plan for, and do your
best to get through your college career in one piece.

Helpful Links:

Intern of the Week: Amina Maswadeh for HAPP!

<Tagline>Check out her internship with Wellness Corporate Solutions</Tagline>

Name:Amina Maswadeh

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Wellness Corporate Solutions

Position Title: Healthy at Hopkins Wellness Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s):Health Administration and Policy Program

Work Term:Spring 2018

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

My internship is focused on promoting health and well-being within the Johns Hopkins employees. There are multiple avenues that the Healthy at Hopkins teams use including webinars, on-site activities, and a Champion program (a team of Hopkins employees who work with the Healthy at Hopkins team to spread well-being within their individual departments). However, one of the key programs instituted is called the Quarterly Rewards Program where an individual receives points for pursuing healthy actions throughout a three month period which then results in a bonus in their paycheck. My project is gathering multiple resources and coming up with ideas that can be included within the program. Alongside this project, I also am in charge of enrolling and welcoming any new Champions that we receive along with creating resources and activities that can be used during on-site booths and events.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I contacted the support team via the email linked on the Healthy at Hopkins page. I was then transferred to the program manager who asked me to send her a copy of my resume and cover letter. Afterwards, I had a phone interview followed by an in-person interview before receiving an email saying that I was selected as the intern.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I have enjoyed being able to see the way in which teamwork truly pays off. By working alongside my teammates, I have learned the importance of communication and work ethic. In addition, it is always rewarding to hear and read about successes within the Hopkins employees.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe that by completing this internship, I will have not only assisted in the creation of a program that will be utilized by hundreds, if not thousands. But rather, I will also help inspire someone to take their life, their health into their own hands.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Search for an internship that resonates with you! It truly makes you motivated to work harder and push yourself to accomplish all your goals. At the same time, do not be discouraged if something doesn't happen the way you wanted, it is very possible that something better is waiting for you. So patience and passion is the key!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
