Meet Blake Hipsley, McNair Scholar, Physicist and Tutor

  <Tagline>Happy National Tutor Appreciation Week!</Tagline>

Tell us a little about
    yourself…

I am a senior
undergraduate at UMBC pursuing two degrees: a B.S. in Physics and B.S. in
Mathematics. I am physics and mathematics tutor for the Learning Resources
Center (LRC) at UMBC, as well as an undergraduate researcher with the Physics
Department in Dr. Hayden’s lab investigating the use of electro-optic polymers
in terahertz detection systems. After graduating from UMBC, I plan go to
graduate school to earn a Ph.D. in Physics and become a professor at a research
    university.

Tell us about
how you are involved on campus.

Besides tutoring and
research, I am also a McNair Scholar as well as a teaching fellow through the
McNair Scholars Program at UMBC, where I’ve had the chance to connect with
other first-generation college students that are from a low income or minority
household that wish to pursue a Ph.D. I have also been a learning assistant
(LA) for the PHYS 121 and am currently a lab technician helping set up the labs
for PHYS 111L, 112L, and 122L. I am also a member of the honors society Sigma
Pi Sigma as well as the Society of Physics Students. Finally, I spend my
remaining free time participating in club lacrosse and club ultimate frisbee
    here at UMBC.

How and why
did you get involved in being a tutor?

I have always had a
passion for helping my friends and other students learn and understand a
subject they find difficult. I became an official tutor during the summer after
my first year at UMBC. I enjoyed being an LA for PHYS 121 and wanted to
continue helping students, but I could no longer give the time to it once I
started doing research in Dr. Hayden’s lab. The LRC provided the opportunity
for me to continue assisting students while not requiring too much of my time.

What is your favorite
    thing about being a tutor?

My favorite thing is
watching what I call the “ah-ha” moment in students. After a student struggling
for some time on a particular problem or concept, I enjoy watching the
expression on their face when the material finally clicks in their brain and
they finally understand how to either solve the problem or utilize a concept.
Knowing that I helped them grasp the idea they had trouble with makes all the
    time and effort worth it.

Why should students
    utilize the tutoring?

Tutoring is a place to
meet students who have succeeded where you be struggling. Tutors are a great
source of not only knowing the material for a course, but great studying
strategies and time management skills that a professor may not take the time to
cover. Students should utilize this free service to become the best student
they can be and become an efficient learner.

What advice
would you give students about how to prepare for a tutoring session?

Best advice I can give
is to come prepared. What I mean by that is to come with your notes from
lecture or discussion section and be ready to ask questions. A tutor can only
help if a student is willing to put in the effort to be helped. Please come
with questions other than homework you haven’t done. If you are struggling with
a particular problem, a tutor can help narrow in on what part of the problem
you need help on, but a tutor isn’t there to do your homework for you, but
assist you so that when you are alone doing homework late at night or in the
middle of an exam, you are able to solve the problem yourself.

When and where can
someone work with you through the Learning Resources Center?

For anyone in need of
    PHYS 111, 112, 121, or 122 and MATH 150, 151, I am available for tutoring
appointments from 10 am to 1 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays (if I am not already
booked for an appointment). You can set up a time to meet me through the LRC website
at lrc.umbc.edu or through the StudyTree app if you have it downloaded. You can
also stop by the LRC front office at Sherman 345 during those times for a
drop-in time if I am available. I am happy to help and hope to see you in one
    of my tutoring sessions!

Intern of the Week: Zack DeThomasis for Media & Com. Studies

<Tagline>Check out his position with Greenfield Partners, Inc!</Tagline>

Name:Zack DeThomasis

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Greenfield Partners, Inc.

Position Title:Social Media Operations Coordinator

Major(s)/Minor(s):Media and Communications Studies

Work Term:Summer 2018

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I worked for a small, private IT staffing and recruiting company called Greenfield Partners, Inc located in Irvine, California.. My responsibilities included establishing the social media pages, connecting the content through all of the platforms to ensure that there was transparency across all pages. Additionally, I was able to learn the day-to-day operations of a small business and what it takes to establish and maintain it. I was able to sit in on phone calls and interviews between employers and potential candidates.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

My mentor was a personal connection and because he works within the staffing industry, he has many connections to various companies. Over the Winter break into the Spring semester of this past year is when I started looking and applying to different internship positions for this Summer. It wasn't until midway through the Spring semester that everything was then set. I had asked him if he had any knowledge of any companies looking to hire interns in any marketing positions. Upon this, he then countered and asked me if I would like to work with him to get his company's social media pages started and functioning.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

It allowed me to be creative and rely on my own knowledge of social media. Additionally, I did a lot of research to see how other companies started and use their social media pages so that I could create something similar for Greenfield Partners, Inc. it was also very challenging because Greenfield isn't a company that produces material goods, but rather it is a service that companies can use to come into contact with potential job candidates. The group at Greenfield really acts as more of the "in-between" for companies to candidates. Being a former athlete at UMBC, I have really only been familiar to things that were sports related. This internship was the first thing that I had done that wasn't sports related so I enjoyed that it was something new to me and maybe out of my comfort zone.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I was able to help out a personal connection with getting his business established on social media fronts. Social Media is a prominent platform for companies in our current time, so to help someone out meant a lot.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

There is always a market for hiring interns. Unfortunately, that's what makes getting an internship position so competitive. Before I got my internship at Greenfield Partners, I had applied to 4 different companies for their internship positions and had gotten denied to all 4 of them. It really did force me to look back at my network and connections and then take it upon myself to reach out. Additionally, teamwork is KEY. Being able to communicate with your coworkers on ideas is a necessity. Like I said, there is always a market for interns and make sure to check base with any of your personal connections.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
Meet Erin Chambers, Writing Center Tutor

<Tagline>still brainstorming or just working on finishing touches?</Tagline>

Celebrate National Tutor Appreciation Week and get to know Erin Chambers, Writing Center Tutor

Hey, Erin, tell us a little about yourself.

My name is
Erin Chambers. I'm from Frederick County, Maryland, and I'm a senior majoring
in Psychology. I'm not sure yet whether I want to go into research or practice,
but I'd like to work with adolescents.

Tell us about how you are involved on campus.

My main
campus involvement is tutoring in the Writing Center. I love my job!

How and why did you get involved in being a tutor?

I've always loved writing, and I enjoyed playing editor for some
of my friends in high school. As a freshman at UMBC, my English 100 professor
recommended me as a Writing Center tutor. I thought that it sounded
interesting, so I applied and entered the training course.

What is your favorite thing about being a tutor?

I love
being able to work with other students as a peer and help them understand, not
just what they can do to make their writing better, but what they've already done
well. My favorite sessions are ones where the student leaves with more
confidence in themselves and their abilities. So many people have learned to
hate writing because they "don't know how" or they think that they're
not skilled enough, when in reality they are more than capable.

Why should students utilize the tutoring?

Writing
Center tutoring can be beneficial for anyone, because everyone can use someone
to talk with or to bounce ideas off of in their writing process. Whether you're
still brainstorming or just working on finishing touches, another trained eye
can always be a big help. I've had many students tell me that just being able
to talk about their writing out loud helped them to understand their own
    thoughts and ideas better.

What advice would you give students about how to prepare for a tutoring session?

The most helpful thing that students can do to prepare for a
tutoring session is to come prepared to be engaged and participate. It also
helps to have some idea of what you'd like to work on or to have a few
questions ready to ask. However, the most important thing is just to be present
    and ready to learn!

When and where can someone work with you through the Learning Resources
    Center?

In the Fall
semester, I tutor Tues, 3-4; Wed, 12-2; Fri, 10:30-12:30. Come stop by the first floor of the Library at the Writing Center to register for an appointment

September Knowledge Exchange Roundup: A Voter Resource Guide

Student staff member Hannah Wilcove provides a recap of the semester’s first Knowledge Exchange

Last week, we had our first Knowledge Exchange of the Fall 2018 semester. With the midterm elections coming up in November, our overarching theme for these Knowledge Exchanges is political and civic engagement. The topic for this Knowledge Exchange was knowing your voting rights, and over the course of the event, we talked about the history of the fight for the right to vote, some of the reasons people don’t vote (such as gerrymandering and voter suppression), and issues of accessing information. We also did an activity to demonstrate the overly-strict matching standards some states use to maintain their voter rolls, and discussed the accessibility of political engagement in the United States as well as stories of feeling encouraged or discouraged from voting. For people with family and friends that are active in politics, it can be hard to think that there are people who don’t know how to vote, but the truth is, seeking out that information can be difficult and time-consuming. From this conversation, the need for a voter resource guide was born.

Side note: This blog is meant to be a general resource, and election laws vary by state, which means it’s hard to cover all the complexities and variations. Because so many people at UMBC are from Maryland, that’s what my examples will cover, but if you want more detailed information about a specific state, I encourage you to look up your state’s name and the information you’re looking for (ex: “Virginia voter registration deadline”).

Registration: The first step in voting in the United States is registration. Unlike some other countries, voter registration in the U.S. is not automatic. So if you’re not registered to vote and you would like to be, take 2 minutes to register here. Make sure to do that before your state’s voter registration deadline, and if it’s passed, check whether or not they have same-day registration (you can do all of that here). In case you didn’t know, Maryland’s voter registration deadline is October 16th, 2018 at 9:00 pm. One thing we focused on in our conversation was voter suppression and the fact that many people–including active voters–have been purged from the voter rolls in recent elections. If that’s something you’re concerned about, you can take 30 seconds to double check your registration status here.

Voting Method: So you’ve got your registration all worked out; now it’s time to figure out how you’re going to vote. Depending on your situation, you have a few different options. If you have some time on Election Day (Tuesday, November 6th), then you can go the traditional route: go to the polls, wait in line, and vote. However, that option won’t work for everyone. If that’s the case, fear not. Maybe you have some time before Election Day, but not on that Tuesday. If that’s the case, you should look into early voting. The details vary by state, but here is a link where you can look into which states have early voting (Maryland does), and here is a calendar that tells you when the early voting period for each state is. If that still doesn’t work, you can look into absentee ballot. With absentee ballots, you don’t have to go to the polls because you just mail in your ballot. This is a great option for people who don’t have reliable transportation, but note that there are two downsides to doing this. The first is that absentee ballots aren’t counted unless the difference in other votes is close enough to warrant it (i.e. if Candidate A is 100 votes ahead of Candidate B, and there are only 20 absentee ballots, those 20 votes won’t be counted because they won’t change the outcome), and the second is that you don’t get a sticker. Still, you shouldn’t assume that your vote won’t be counted, so if absentee voting looks like the best option for you, then check out your state’s rules for it here. Just like early voting, the deadlines around absentee ballots vary by state, so take a look here at what your state’s deadlines are.

Action Plan: Once you’ve figured out how you’re going to vote, the next step is making an action plan. This might seem like overkill, but given the craziness that is life, an action plan can help you make sure that you don’t forget to vote or run out of time on election day. So what do you need to know? If you’re voting via absentee ballot, then you just need to make sure that you apply for your ballot and send it in by your state’s deadlines (links are in the above section). If you’re going to the polls, either during early voting or on Election Day, then there’s a little bit more to it. First, you need to figure out where your polling place is, so you can actually go there. You can use this link to find your polling place, but the most reliable method is to use your state’s board of elections website (a list of those is provided on the linked page). For early voting, there may be fewer polling locations open, but you can use this website to find out the specifics for your state and county (you just click on “early voting” under topics and your state, and voila). With these sites, you should also be able to find the specific hours that your polling place is open. Lastly, once you figure out where and when you’re voting, you just need to figure out how to get there. If you have access to a car, then that’s taken care of, but if not, have no fear. If you can’t get a ride from someone, check if your polling place is accessible by public transportation. If so, look up the schedule and make sure that there’s a time you can get there. Not the case? Not a problem. The rideshare company Lyft is offering 50% off rides to the polls on Election Day. For UMBC students, SGA is providing free transportation to early voting in six counties across the state, which you can learn more about here.

Research: You’re all set; you know how you’re going to vote and when, and you’re ready to head to your polling place and vote for…oh, right, you actually need to know who’s on the ballot and what they’re running for. At our Knowledge Exchange, we talked about how hard it can be to figure out all the details because, frankly, not everyone has the time to do that kind of extensive research. The good news is that there are people who have already done some of the work for you. If you need to know what district you’re in, you can use this website if you live in Maryland (just click on the button that says “who represents me” at the top right), and this one if you don’t. The League of Women Voters also has a great tool on their website where you can enter your address and see all the races on your ballot, learn about candidates’ backgrounds, and compare their answers to various questions. For all you Maryland folk reading this, The Baltimore Sun has a voter guide just for you, with comprehensive bios, questionnaires, and articles about each candidate running for elected office in our state.

Tell your friends! Now you’re really all set. If you want to increase the voter rate in the U.S., then one of the best ways to do so is word of mouth! As I’ve said before, it can be difficult and time-consuming to figure all this out, but now that you’re basically an expert, you can help your friends work through it. Plus, with all the links right in front of you, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel; just share this guide with your friends to make voting a little more accessible.
