Fall 2018 Convocation
Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
We look forward to your participation in our Fall 2018 Convocation on Tuesday, August 28 at 3:30 p.m. in the UMBC Event Center.
Convocation is a special opportunity for faculty and staff to welcome new students to the UMBC community. If you are interested in participating this year, please take a moment to RSVP through our Online Convocation Form. The information you provide will assist us in event planning logistics and appropriate seating arrangements.
Marching in the procession requires academic regalia, which UMBC will subsidize the rental of for faculty and staff if needed. Regalia can be ordered now through August 10, 2018. Regalia ordered after August 3, however, will incur an expedited shipping fee to ensure timely delivery.
Following the Convocation ceremony, we will host a community-wide picnic on The Commons North Lawn. This is an excellent opportunity for faculty and staff to meet our incoming class, and I welcome everyone on campus to attend.

Sarah Shin Appointed Associate Provost for Academic Affairs
Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Sarah J. Shin as Associate Provost for Academic Affairs effective August 1, 2018.
As Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, Dr. Shin will advance UMBC’s mission by working with the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs in matters related to academic program reviews and new program development. To carry out these responsibilities, Dr. Shin will work collaboratively with academic units and colleges across UMBC. Reporting to the Provost, Dr. Shin will work with the Council of Vice Presidents and Deans to support project management and communications related to the implementation of UMBC’s strategic plan. She will also strengthen the close partnerships between UMBC and University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), focusing on developing effective research collaborations.
For the past two years, Dr. Shin has served as Special Assistant to the Provost for Academic Initiatives. In this role she oversaw a number of special projects (including UMBC’s new faculty awards initiative) and served as co-chair of UMBC’s Advising Task Force. Last year, Dr. Shin was awarded the prestigious American Council on Education Fellowship and served as a fellow in the President’s Office at UMB, where she furthered the development of inter-institutional partnerships between UMBC and UMB, work that she will continue as Associate Provost.
Dr. Shin brings to her new role extensive experience in leadership and shared governance. She has served as president of Faculty Senate and played a significant role in institutional planning and assessment as a member of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee and the Middle States Accreditation Steering Committee. Dr. Shin has served as a member of the Provost’s Executive Committee for the Recruitment and Retention of Under-Represented Minority Faculty since its inception in 2010.
Dr. Shin joined UMBC in 1999 and is a professor of education and the 2017-2020 Presidential Research Professor. She received her Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Michigan and has established an international reputation for scholarship related to bilingualism, heritage language education, and TESOL teacher preparation.
UMBC is very fortunate to have someone of Dr. Sarah Shin’s impressive experience and talent to serve as Associate Provost for Academic Affairs. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Shin on her new appointment and supporting her in this important endeavor.

How to Make Course Materials Accessible

how to make your course materials accessible now and save time later!
The objective of this hands-on training will focus on providing faculty
with the basic skills to assess if their course materials are accessible
and to learn how to easily make them accessible in order to support
access and inclusion of students with disabilities and universal design
for all learners.
Trainees
should bring their laptop with Adobe Acrobat Pro or DC installed and at
least one PDF document from their course materials to review. Direct
instruction will be provided for both creation of an accessible document
and remediation of inaccessible content using common authoring tools
including Microsoft and Adobe products. For questions or to RSVP,
