Kinetic Potential (KP) Leadership Development Program Part-time Educator Positions in Area Schools
Whether you’re a senior, graduate, or alumni this fellowship may be right for you.  The Kinetic Potential (KP) Leadership Development Program program is designed to mentor and train professional educators for positions with our K-12 employer partners (e.g., PGCPS, BCPS, etc).  The KP Leadership Development Program was launched to create a formal pipeline for educators into the K-12 system and to increase these individuals readiness to hit the ground running upon placement. A stipend (up to $4,000) is provided and will be based upon academic and professional experience. A typical course is 1-2 hours in duration, delivered 2-3 times / week and occurs between the hours of 2pm –9pm.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court released a 5-to-4 decision upholding the Trump administration’s entry restrictions on nationals of Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen. The travel ban has been in effect since December 4, 2017, and this new ruling rejects any legal challenges. The decision allows for indefinite restrictions on entry of nationals from designated countries.

We at UMBC remain committed to inclusive excellence and global engagement. Specific travel restrictions vary by country and are subject to categorical exceptions and case-by-case waivers. If you, a friend, or family member is a national of one of the countries subject to the travel ban, I encourage you to learn more about the listed restrictions, exceptions, and waivers by reading the Presidential Proclamation of September 24, 2017 and reviewing the resources listed at the end of this message.

It is important to note that the decision of the Court does not reflect the recommendations of higher education leaders. The American Council on Education and 32 other higher education associations filed an amicus brief with the Court that outlines how this policy will negatively affect the ability of U.S. colleges and universities to compete for global talent. The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities has stated, “While the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the president has the authority to implement the existing travel ban, the Court did not rule on whether such a policy is wise.”

Responsibilities:
The incumbent will join a team of six faculty librarians and one support staff to provide reference assistance (in person and online) and outreach to a diverse community of UMBC students, faculty, staff and community members. Specific duties include: develop, implement and maintain departmental training and library-wide cross training materials and activities; provide exceptional customer service to faculty and students; provide administrative support for the Reference department, including departmental scheduling and analytics; supervise student employees; and perform other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Note:  Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills and abilities required may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Closing Date: July 18, 2018

Salary: Pay Range 10 (starting at $28,653) based on the University System of Maryland Pay Program

Hours: Part-time (30 hours per week). Hours for this position are: Tuesday - Saturday 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. (with one weekday 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m). Hours are subject to change to reflect changes in library hours and staffing needs.

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

Please join me in welcoming Candace Dodson-Reed as chief of staff in UMBC’s Office of the President. 

Ms. Dodson-Reed has deep connections to our UMBC community, and currently serves as assistant vice president of communications and public affairs. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from UMBC and master’s degree in executive leadership from Georgetown University- McDonough School of Business.

Prior to returning to UMBC in 2016 to serve in our Office of Institutional Advancement, Ms. Dodson-Reed served as vice president of the Greater Baltimore Committee (2015 – 16) and in key leadership roles in the Howard County government (2007 – 14), including as deputy chief of staff to the county executive. She has been recognized throughout the region for her leadership and service.

As we look forward to welcoming Ms. Dodson-Reed to her new role on July 2, I also want to thank Elyse Ashburn for a phenomenal five years of service as chief of staff. 

Ms. Ashburn came to UMBC in 2011 from a career in journalism, and she served in the Office of Institutional Advancement before transitioning to the president’s office. We are so appreciative of her dedication and expertise, through both challenging and exciting moments for our university. UMBC has benefited greatly from her leadership, and we wish her all the best.
