Meet Meagan Barrett, Writing Center Tutor

<Tagline>"an extra set of eyes can make a huge difference"</Tagline>

Get to know our amazing Writing Center Tutors, who can help you improve any writing assignment for any class.

Meagan Barrett

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm currently an English major who loves to write fiction, and draw my ideas! I have two cats,
and spend most of my time reading and/or binge watching Criminal Minds on
    Netflix.

Tell us about how you are involved on campus.

On top of tutoring,
I'm a copy editor on both the Retriever Weekly and the Bartleby staff. Most
semesters I also work as a Writing Fellow for English 100 classes. So there are
quite a few places you might see me around campus!

How and why did you get involved in being a tutor?

Funnily enough, I
found out about tutoring on campus when I was tutoring my
mathematically-inclined boyfriend in English 100. I did such a good job,
apparently, that he was recommended to be a Writing Tutor! Before then, I
didn't know the Writing Center even existed. He declined, but I decided to
follow the instructions on the email myself, and I emailed the Writing Center
director to see if I she would consider hiring me instead.

During my internship in the Writing Center, I
discovered that I really enjoy working with and helping others understand
    writing.

What is your favorite thing about being a tutor?

My favorite thing
about tutoring is that it gives me the opportunity to talk about my
biggest passion all the time! Writing is kind of my life's mission, so being
able to work with it directly is pretty exciting for me.

Why should students utilize the tutoring?

I definitely think all
students should utilize the Learning Resources Center, and not just if you're
on the verge of failing your classes. I think it's hard sometimes, because our
culture tends to put a stigma on the idea of "tutoring," so it can be
hard to ask for help when you need it.

But the fact of the
matter is that it's normal to need help! And the Writing Center is a place
that allows students to get that extra help in a low-pressure, nonjudgmental
environment. All of us writing tutors know that writing is
hard, and even the best writers make mistakes. So getting an extra set of eyes
can make a huge difference to your grade, because they'll probably notice
    something you didn't!

This is especially
true of writing, but can also be true of other subjects as well — getting a
    second opinion never hurts!

What advice would you give students about how to
    prepare for a tutoring session?

I think the most important way a student can
prepare for a session is by making sure you know what you want to focus on! If
you bring a seven page paper to a 30-minute session, I likely won't be able to
look at the whole thing. So it's important to prioritize what you need help
with, so we can spend our limited time on things that matter to you! (But also
    — bring two paper copies with you!)

When and where can someone work with you through
    the Learning Resources Center?

I'm available in the
Writing Center, located on the first floor of the AOK Library, on Mondays from
12:30-3:30pm this summer. I'm also available for online tutoring on
Sunday nights from 6-9pm. And I'm always happy to help!

FY19 UMBC Bookstore Department Charge Authorization Sheet

It is the end of another
fiscal year. The current Bookstore authorization sheets will expire at the end
of June. Please submit a form for the
new fiscal year by the first week of July.

Please fill out the UMBC
Bookstore Department Charge Authorization Sheet found on our webpage (http://bookstore.umbc.edu/SiteText.aspx?id=22144)
to establish an account for the new fiscal year. On the authorization sheets,
please write authorized individual chart strings in their entirety (fund, prog
fin, dept, project, activity ID, resource type and analysis type). Limit one chart string per PS chart string
line. Remember to have appropriate individuals sign the space provided.
When you have completed your sheet(s), please return them to the Bookstore.

Any deletions or additions to
the sheet over the course of the fiscal year must be sent in writing. Phone authorizations are not accepted.
On all grant accounts, the Principal Investigator and Department Chair must
sign the UMBC Bookstore Department Charge Authorization Sheet.

Also, please inform your
department that they should know the chart string they would like to use for
their purchase upon entering the Bookstore, as many departments have multiple
    chart strings.

One Time Authorization forms
can also be found on our webpage, for occasions when someone other than the
authorized individual needs to make a purchase. Remember, someone authorized
must sign the form to make it effective.

As a reminder, the UMBC
Bookstore staff is required to ask for a picture ID when faculty and staff are
signing for department charges. This is a state mandated auditing procedure
utilized to protect the UMBC community and to prevent illegal use of
departmental accounts. It is mandatory that members of your department show
    their ID when making purchases.

Please return this to the Bookstore as soon as
possible so we may continue to provide uninterrupted service.

Thank you for your support
    throughout the year.

Evan Avila Receives Prestigious iOme Challenge Award

<Tagline>Raising awareness about financial security in retirement</Tagline>

The iOme (I OWE ME) Challenge is a national competition operated by The Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER) to raise awareness
among college students about the impact of financial security in retirement on the social and economic
well being of our society. Students from across the country respond to the annual iOme Challenge
question in the form of a policy and research paper and a promotional video. A blue ribbon panel judges
the submissions and selects the winning team.

This year, students were asked to imagine that they have been invited by Congress to join a Special
Bipartisan Task Force to address the nation's growing retirement crisis. Their task was to develop ideas
and solutions for increasing retirement savings opportunities for millennials.

Evan’s essay, Rethinking Millennial Retirement: Policy Recommendations for a Gig Economy,
“demonstrated great policy depth, a keen understanding of the challenges millennials face, and creativity
in devising solutions that are achievable for this age cohort” said David Wegge, Interim Dean of Schneider School of Business and Economics, St. Norbert College, one of the founders of the competition, and a member of the judging panel.

Cindy Hounsell, President of Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement, sponsor of the competition said,
“We are impressed by Mr. Avila’s response to the more complicated challenges and deterrents millennials
face in preparing for their future retirement. We look forward to his presentation and policy discussion at
    our upcoming symposium.”

As the winner, Mr. Avila will present his paper at a symposium on Capitol Hill and have an opportunity to discuss it with public policymakers. The faculty advisor for the project, Professor Douglas J. Lamdin, department of Economics at UMBC, will also attend and participate in the panel. The symposium, "The
Millennial Perspective: An Intergenerational Discussion on Retirement Solutions" will be held on June 20, 2018 and is sponsored by WISER. A keynote speaker, panels of experts and congressional staff
leaders will also discuss current issues and legislative proposals. A reception will follow honoring the
    iOme Challenge winner.

Congratulations, Evan!
