How I Celebrate Chinese New Year!

    <Tagline>Guess who's excited?? Me!</Tagline>

Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, is coming up quite rapidly!! It has been celebrated for thousands of years, but I won’t bore you with the history. In my family, it is tradition to get together and celebrate with each other, honor our ancestors, and eat plenty of homemade food! We actually celebrate it the day or night before the actual day of the new year, so this year we are celebrating on the 15th of February. Since it is based off of the lunar calendar, the dates always differ each year which gets super confusing. Everyone may celebrate it differently, but for me, the main focus is to relax and eat everything my grandma puts in front of me. This year’s celebration is extra special to me because it falls on my birthday: February 15th!! I hope everyone who chooses to celebrate receives plenty of red envelopes (traditionally filled with money!) and enjoys a variety of yummy food.

But enough about me, I want to also mention what our students are doing to celebrate Chinese New Year. The Chinese Student Association (CSA) is hosting a Lunar New Year Gala on February 15th, from 7:30 to 9:30pm in the UC Ballroom, open and free for anyone to attend so definitely check it out if you want. Furthermore, Mosaic is hosting an event titled “So...What is ‘Good’ English?” discussing the origins of the variety of American English dialects and the superiority of what is considered “standard English” on the same day, 2/15, from 5:30-7pm in Commons 329. If you find yourself with a some free time tomorrow, please come by to either OR BOTH of these events!

-Laura Huang:)

Spring Over to the Career Center

<Tagline>NEW ways to help you get Career Fair ready!</Tagline>

So that title is cheesy, but really the spring semester is a great time to take advantage of all the resources the Career Center has to offer you! I KNOW you’re looking for a summer job or internship, because I myself am still on the search. New jobs and internships are being posted on UMBCworks every day, so keep checking to find an opportunity that’s perfect for you.

NEWSFLASH: The Spring Internship and Career fair is THIS FRIDAY! This is THE place to get your name (and your resume) out there to potential employers. Whether you’re looking for a summer job, an internship next fall, or a full-time job for after graduation, this is the best place to start. Over 130 employers are registered to be there, and you can find a full list here. This semester, there are NEW resources available to you before the big day! Here’s the run-down:

1: Spice up your resume! Tomorrow is Resume Rescue+, which is more than it has ever been before! In the past, Resume Rescue was a day where drop-in resume review hours were extended to 10am-4pm the Tuesday before the fair. This is still the case! February 13th is the day you have NO EXCUSES to get your resume in top condition, so come in anytime during those hours. Drop-in hours are still every Monday-Thursday from 2pm-4pm, except on the day of the Career Fair, as all staff will be at the fair. Now here’s where the “+” comes in….

2: Create a Professional Pitch! In addition to resume reviews, Resume Rescue+ will have two additional services, the first of which is developing your 30-second commercial. You can get tips and have your questions answered on how to look the part. The link above gives you the basics on professional dress, but it also doesn’t hurt to stand out! You still want to be tasteful, but it’s always important to let your personal style shine through.

And finally, try to relax. Employers can smell fear.

Just kidding, there’s nothing to worry about!
Charlene Uhl Announces Retirement

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

We are writing to inform
you that Charlene Uhl, Director of Budget and Resource Analysis, has
announced her retirement effective March 1, 2018. Her last day in the office will be Friday,
    February 23.

Charlene has served
as the Director of the Office of Budget and Resource Analysis at the University
for almost six years. She has been a
great resource for all of us in a highly visible role. Her impressive understanding of the budget
process at the State level and her ability to discuss strategy and budget at a
detailed campus level have provided valuable input to the legislative processes
influencing our budget as well as policy issues. She has improved and documented many of our campus
budget procedures with the assistance of her excellent staff. Additionally, she has served on many campus
committees and task forces over those years including Strategic Planning and
Middle States Work Groups. We are deeply grateful for all of the great work she
has done for Financial Services and UMBC.

A search committee to find a replacement has already been established. We
hope to fill the vacancy as quickly as possible and will inform the campus as
soon as the position is filled.

On
behalf of Financial Services and the entire UMBC community, we would like to
thank Charlene for her exceptional contributions to UMBC over the years.

Please join us
in congratulating Charlene as she enters this new and exciting stage of life on Thursday,
    February 22, 3 - 5 p.m., in The Commons, Fireside Lounge. Light
refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to Desiree Stonesifer,
