Meet Danny-- he has important research to present but he's not sure what venue would be best to reveal his work.
Well, Danny-- have you considered URCAD (Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day)?
"No, I hadn't," Danny averred. "Actually, such an event would probably be perfect to reveal my new video game creation-- Fire Quasars".
Well, Danny, it probably would!
Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits, performances, and film. Over 300 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects. They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated.This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

Mark your calendar, "How to Win at Interviewing" Feb 2nd
The Residential Life Selection Committee will be partnering with The Career Center to host a "How to Win at Interviewing" session, Friday, February 2, 2018 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm Community Center Multipurpose Room. This event is for all paraprofessional candidates for the 2018-2019 academic year.
They will be sharing interview tips, stress management strategies, and some questions that will be used during the interview process. The Committee will also be sending out a comprehensive information sheet to candidates after the event so highlights can be shared with those who may be unable to attend. Snacks will be provided.

Free Shuttle Bus
There will be a free shuttle bus to transport
students to and from the career fair on Saturday. If you will need
transportation, be sure to complete the shuttle bus registration form at the
bottom of the BEYA registration page: http://careers2.umbc.edu/calendar/fairs/beyabus.php.
Please note that the free shuttle bus is available on a first-come, first-serve
basis. The free shuttle will run only on Saturday between 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Transportation to and from other conference events (such as the BEYA Gala held
Saturday evening) is on your own.

Farewell reception for Associate Provost Nico Washington
Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
I am writing to inform you that, after 17 years of outstanding service to our community, Associate Provost Nico Washington will be leaving UMBC on February 16 to take up a new position as Chief Operating Officer at the Universities at Shady Grove. While her outstanding service and leadership at UMBC will be greatly missed, her new position represents an incredible and well-deserved professional opportunity, and I know you will join me in wishing her well in her new endeavor.
Ms. Washington began her career with the UMBC in the Division of Professional Studies in 2001 and joined the Office of the Provost in 2008. As UMBC's Associate Provost for Financial Management, Ms. Washington was responsible for directing all budgetary and financial planning of the provost's office, as well as providing oversight, administrative, and financial leadership for the Division of Academic Affairs. Ms. Washington was instrumental in UMBC's Shared Services Centers planning and implementation, where she served as co-chair of the initiative from 2012 to present. Ms. Washington developed, designed, and planned and implemented, as well as directed, the Academic Affairs Shared Services Center in the Office of the Provost.
We will begin a search for Ms. Washington's replacement as associate provost for financial management shortly and will update the university community as soon as more information becomes available.
On behalf of the entire UMBC community, I would like to thank Ms. Washington for her exceptional contributions to UMBC over the years. I would also like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to her for all the support she has provided to me personally as provost over the past six years.
A farewell reception for Nico Washington will be held on Monday, February 12, 3 - 5 p.m., in the University Center, room 312. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to Karen Roberts, karenrob@umbc.edu, by February 5 if you can join us for this occasion.

The Mosaic Spring 2018 Hours, Staff Updates & Resources
January - May 2018
Welcome to a new semester UMBC! We hope that you all had a restful winter break!
Spring hours for all our spaces begin this week (Jan. 29) and run through undergraduate commencement (May 24).
Our spring hours are:
The Mosaic
Monday-Thursday 10am-7pm
Friday: 10am-5pm
Saturday-Sunday: Closed
*Located on the second floor of the Commons building, down the hall from the Gameroom room 2B23
The Interfaith Center
Sunday-Saturday 7am-11pm
*Located in the Student Development and Success Center next to Student Judicial Programs
The Queer Student Lounge
Monday-Friday 7am-11pm
Saturday-Sunday
*Located on the second floor of the University Center at the end of hallway ELI classrooms
Our spaces are available to all students, staff, faculty and their visitors on a "first come, first seated" basis. The Mosaic offers free coffee, tea, and snacks are available as well!

Our work takes us out of the Mosaic quite frequently. As a result, the Mosaic may be closed periodically to accommodate Campus Life and/or Division of Student Affairs meetings and events. Appropriate signage or myUMBC post will be posted as early as possible in the event of a closure.

Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects. They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated.This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

Study a solar eclipse. Take photographs in Brazil. Develop a better cancer drug. Become a URA scholar and research your passion!
Undergraduate Research Awards provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate students to support their research or creative work with a UMBC faculty mentor on an original project. UMBC students of all years and disciplines are invited to apply, as long as they will remain enrolled at UMBC long enough to complete the proposed work.
