Alternative Ways to Gain Experience

<Tagline>Believe it or not, internships aren't the only answer.</Tagline>

In a job market that feels inundated with candidates, you
may feel completely overwhelmed trying to find ways to stand out among your
competitors. This can be especially true if you’re starting out in your career
and are trying to find ways to add experiences to your resume.

It feels like an endless cycle. You need experiences...to add
experiences to your resume...but without experiences...it’s difficult to get
experiences in the first place. Internship opportunities fill up quickly within
a seemingly narrow window of time.

In other words, how in the world do you get the visibility
you need to land that first internship?

Here’s the truth: pursuing and securing an internship can
feel like chasing a purple unicorn.

But here’s a secret: there are actually other ways to
          acquire career-related experience.

Here are a few to help you get started:

Course Projects – Students are often surprised to find that their
course projects count as experience, but they most certainly do! By listing out
the class and details of what you did to complete an assignment, as well as the
impact of your work, this demonstrates a level of knowledge and expertise that
could be considered just as valuable as an internship experience.

On-Campus Employment – If
you find yourself on campus often, getting a job with a campus department could
be a viable option. You get bonus points if it’s relevant to your major or
career of interest. For more information on how to snag an on-campus position, check out our post
          here.

Volunteer – Helping out a
local non-profit, community organization, or student organization is another great way to gain
experience. You could even tie the work to something related to your major, for
example, running social media if you're a Media & Communication Studies major. For even
          more tips, check
          out our post here.

Professional Associations – By connecting with professionals in your
industry of interest through professional associations, you’ll not only build
your network but also open yourself up to potential opportunities through their
organizations or even the association itself. This option does require
networking, which can be a source of anxiety for students, but it helps
exercise that muscle that will absolutely be needed for the actual job market.

Micro-internships – Micro-internships are a final great option if you’re
still searching for semester-long work and need more experience. Go to parkerdewey.com to find available
projects. You can also look into theforage.com
to gain experience through their job simulations.

Want to know more ways you can stand out as a leading
candidate outside of internships? Join us for a Keys to Success
workshop on Monday, October 7 at 12 PM at The Commons 331 to learn
          how.

I acquired knowledge in Agile Project Management by assisting the Product Owner in leading a team of Software Developers, Quality Assurance Testers, and Analysts. Additionally, I had the opportunity to lead stakeholder meetings with international members (from London, Budapest, Mumbai, etc.) to guide the team in redesigning and documenting an improved workflow for the global scenario analysis program.

Some of the skills I gained include backlog management, UI/UX design, process management, data management, stakeholder management, and requirements gathering. I also conducted more than 20 interviews and created a SharePoint database for a program-long non-financial risk technology inventory project, which was shared firm-wide. We presented our findings to Executive Directors and senior management.

My day-to-day responsibilities involved joining meetings (both virtual and in-person) and networking with employees. I used a variety of tools, including Excel for writing user stories, PowerPoint for creating presentations and creating new workshop workflows, and JIRA for project management tasks. I also used ServiceNow to grant employee entitlements.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?:

I obtained my position by applying to the program online through Morgan Stanley's website. I applied on July 25, 2023. I sent my resume, and soon afterward, I was contacted through email for the next steps. The first step involved a phone call where I was asked questions. This call was intended to make sure I was prepared to move on to the next stage. Then, the next step was an in-person interview day, which was called "Superday." During this day, I had multiple interviews, each one with a different person, and a group project with other interviewees.

About two weeks after this process, I received a phone call from the recruiter in the morning, and they told me that I had been accepted for the position. I was officially extended an offer on November 15, 2023, and this was when I logged onto the online portal and accepted it there.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?:

Handshake

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?:

I enjoyed having the opportunity to get in-depth experience working at a large financial company. I enjoyed making connections with other employees the most. The process of networking and working with my manager and team was an exciting aspect.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?:

I believe I made an impact by contributing significantly to the team. I helped my manager redesign the entire new workflow for the scenario analysis program we were working on, and the team will continue to use my work. Additionally, the NFR Technology Inventory project I made with a group of other interns was shared with the Legal and Compliance Division in Baltimore, so employees will continue to use that.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?:

I would advise another student to focus on developing skills that show they are taking initiative. Creating your own projects, your own club, or another original idea will greatly enhance your resume. Focus on diversifying your skills while maintaining high grades and other commitments.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.:

I enjoyed working with my team the most and establishing a connection with my manager and mentors. The Career Center helped me prepare and adjust my resume before applying to the position.

Researcher of the Week: Caly Ferguson

  <Tagline>Using engineering to help amputees</Tagline>

After successfully creating the software foundation, we plan to apply it to a 3D-printed prosthetic arm as a proof of concept to show how the system works in a real-life application.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project?

My project mentor is Dr. Ramana Kumar Vinjamuri from the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. I found my mentor through the Meyerhoff HHMI Scholars program, which allowed me to start rotating in different research labs on campus during my freshman year of college.

How did you become interested in this project?

Going into college, I set a goal for myself to build a working prosthetic before I graduate, due to my long-time interest in enhancing technology in the medical field. To do this I looked for a specific lab that would help me achieve this goal, and Dr. Vinjamuri’s lab was the best environment for me to pursue my goal. Even though my idea for a project when first starting was a bit different from the larger theme of the lab, he helped direct my project to fuse elements of the work that was being done in the lab with my personal goals so that I could further the knowledge in my field of work while achieving my four-year plan.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

The hardest part about my research is learning all of the computer science skills that go into creating a machine learning algorithm that aims to apply that as a base software for a device. Since I am a Mechanical Engineering major, I do not take a lot of coding classes, so over the years I have built those skills from the ground up through my experience working on this project.

What has been the most rewarding part?

The most rewarding part of my research has been sharing my results with others at big conferences, where I can walk people through the progression of my learning and progress on my project. As time goes on and I attend more conferences, I can see the end goal that I set for myself in freshman year becoming more and more of a reality!

How will you disseminate your research?

This academic year I have planned to attend the Biomedical Engineering Society Annual Meeting in October and the Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day at UMBC in the Spring.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

My advice is for students to try different research experiences while they are in undergrad, whether it be through sustained research or summer research experiences so that they have a better understanding of what they do and don't like about lab environments, project development, and other things that are helpful to know before applying to graduate school.

What are your career goals?

My career goal is to earn a PhD in Biomedical Engineering so that I can start and run a Biotechnology company that manufactures advanced and affordable medical devices. I also have aspirations of running a research lab as a principal investigator.
