Black queer dance floors have always served something else — a vibrant and vibrating antidote to the here and now. The most important clubs in Black queer nightlife history, from The Warehouse (Chicago) to Paradise Garage (New York) were known for serving ovah beats, guiding clubbers eager to ride waveforms to other dimensions. What do these frequencies of Black queerness make possible? The performance will include a conversation with artist and DJ Kristy la rAt and lighting by Artemis.

madison moore is an artist-scholar, DJ, and Assistant Professor of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. madison (any pronouns) holds a PhD in American Studies from Yale and has previously held positions in the Roski School of Art and Design at the University of Southern California, Virginia Commonwealth University, The New School, the University of Richmond and King’s College London, and has also been a visiting guest artist in the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale. Barbie is an easily digestible media that portrays basic feminist principles for the general public. But if Barbie is a feminist film, is it also intersectional? This study examines the limitations of the Barbie movie’s portrayal of feminism and its failings in regard to intersectionality. We aim to inspire critical thinking around media and intersectionality and shed light on the prevalence of White feminism in popular media. Using content analysis informed by intersectional feminist theory, we analyzed instances in the film that demonstrated (pseudo-)feminist principles and themes in order to determine how intersectional Barbie’s brand of feminism is. We also explored avenues by which Barbie could better depict intersectionality and contemporary feminist thought.

Olivia took this selfie before the start of the poster session and sent it to her mom, who asked, "Are you nervous?" Her reply: "I don't know, do I look nervous??"

Early-life adversity and psychosis can alter sensitivity to stimuli. We used images from the International Affective Pictures Set (IAPS) to examine how diagnosis and abuse history influence picture ratings under stress. We hypothesized that stress would heighten reactivity to unpleasant stimuli and reduce reactivity to pleasant ones.

52 people with schizophrenia (PSZ) and 32 healthy volunteers (HVs) performed the Emotional Experience Task (EET) – requiring subjects to view and rate the “positivity” and “negativity” of emotions evoked by pictures twice – once after experiencing an acute stressor and once after a neutral event. We assess abuse history with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire.

PSZ exhibited reduced rating range, relative to HVs. PSZ rated positive pictures as less positive (t = 1.958; p = 0.05) and negative pictures as less negative (t = 2.711; p = 0.008) than HVs. Physical abuse (PA) scores correlated with aversive image ratings (r = 0.309; p = 0.035) and the acute stressor’s impact on positive (r = 0.333; p = 0.022) and neutral stimuli (r = 0.300; p = 0.040). Higher PA was associated with greater stressor impact on IAPS ratings.

Diagnosis and abuse history impacted affective picture ratings. These factors did not interact in influencing picture ratings.

Ways to Gain Experience

<Tagline>Learn how to build out your resume using these tips</Tagline>

Here at the Career Center, we meet with students whose work experiences run the gamut. If you are finding yourself lacking this area, here are some suggestions to build out your resume.

Entrepreneurship. Have a good idea and want to see what you can do with it? Consider starting a small business. By becoming an entrepreneur, you can demonstrate you’re motivated, passionate, innovative, and have good decision-making skills. You can also tie your business to your industry of interest as well. Need guidance in this area? The Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is another UMBC resource that you could turn to for mentorship and ideas.

Micro-internships. These are short-term professional assignments that allow you to work on a real project in a limited amount of time. Micro-internships are a great option if you’re still searching for semester-long work and need more experience. Go to parkerdewey.com to find available projects. You can also look into theforage.com to gain experience through their job simulations.

On-campus leadership. If you are already active with a student organization on campus you can add relevant experiences to your resume by stepping into a leadership role. You can even try to find something tied to your major depending on the organization’s needs. For example, if you’re a finance major you could be the treasurer of a student organization.

Research. As a research institution, UMBC is home to many research projects being conducted by faculty members across the university. If you are interested in learning more about research and obtaining research experience, you could inquire with faculty members to see if there’s an opening in their labs and/or research teams. If you’re especially interested in pursuing graduate school, conducting research with a faculty mentor is a great way to determine if you want to go down that path, while building experience for your resume.

Volunteer. Connect with a local non-profit or community organization that works for a cause you feel passionate about and see if they need volunteers. You can find out if they need help in your area of study to make it even more relevant for your resume. For example, if you’re a Media & Communication Studies major you could help with the organization’s social media. Another great way to get involved in service-learning and community engagement opportunities is through The Shriver Center.

As you can see, there are a number of different ways you can add work experiences to your resume outside of the more traditional internship positions. Want to hear more about how others do it? Join us at our Inside Scoop: Entrepreneurs Panel Discussion on April 15th at University Center 312 from 12-1 PM.

URCAD Sneak Peek: Is Gerwig's Barbie Intersectional???

 <Tagline>White Feminism and Pop Media</Tagline>
