VOLUNTEER INTERN - OIL AND GAS ANALYSIS

<Tagline>Fall Opportunity with the Congressional Budget Office (CBO)</Tagline>

VOLUNTEER INTERN - OIL AND GAS ANALYSIS
Microeconomic Studies Division

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) is a small nonpartisan agency that
provides economic and budgetary analysis to the Congress. The
Microeconomic Studies Division seeks a volunteer intern to work at least
16-20 hours per week at CBO during the fall semester to conduct an
analysis of federal oil and gas fiscal regimes. This division has
primary responsibility for analyzing a broad range of policy issues,
with an emphasis on the microeconomic foundations of the economy and on
the federal government's role as a regulator, manager of resources, and
provider of public goods. Its analytical areas include: agriculture,
commerce and trade, energy and natural resources, infrastructure,
including both transportation and telecommunications, and climate and
the environment. The division also examines the effects of prospective
legislation on the private sector and estimates the costs of mandates
    imposed on the private sector.

The intern will help in the collection and processing of data related to
the leasing, exploration, development, and production of oil and gas in
the United States. This and other available data will be used to
estimate the effect of differing royalty rates, regulations, and
permitting requirements on the probabilities that firms lease, develop,
or produce oil and gas. Under the guidance of a CBO analyst, the intern
will work with appropriate agencies to collect the necessary data and
    assist with data analysis.

Qualifications
Candidates should be working towards a graduate degree in economics,
public policy, or a related field, although current undergraduate
seniors with excellent quantitative skills and prior research experience
may be considered. Candidates must be detail oriented and proficient in
Excel and/or MS Access; proficiency with STATA is preferred but not
required. Prior experience working with large data sets and familiarity
with oil and gas development is a plus. This position also requires a
person with strong communication and organizational skills who can work
independently and as a part of a team. Although this is a fall
internship, it may be possible to extend through the spring semester.

Unpaid internships can only be offered to students whose universities
sponsor internships with federal agencies. Such sponsorship does not
require the student to receive compensation from the university, nor
does it require the university to offer class credit for the internship.
The university must be willing to complete CBO’s sponsorship form
stating that it is sponsoring the student for an unpaid internship at
CBO which will be of educational benefit to the participant. Students
must verify for themselves that their university is willing to sponsor
the internship before applying but will only be required to submit the
sponsorship form if the student is offered an internship.

How to Apply
Please submit a cover letter, résumé, unofficial transcripts, and
contact information for two references online at
https://www.cbo.gov/careers. This position is not covered by the
    Veterans Employment Opportunities Act.
Use of this tool had reached the point where the once somewhat useful status updates section had become nothing more than a TweetDeck column where your LinkedIn contacts tweets could be found.

Now that the LinkedIn site is back to what it was intended to be, a powerful networking site where the benefits of social meet the needs of the professional, we can refocus our effort on how to maximize this platform.

There still seems to be some confusion on how to use LinkedIn, however; and while filling your contacts world up with Tweets is no longer a LinkedIn option, there are still several basic tenets of using LinkedIn that seem to go ignored.

More than anything, LinkedIn isn’t Facebook, it isn’t Twitter or any other Social Network for that matter. It is the most useful network on the planet for professionals and companies looking to hire the best talent, find key customer contacts, or network for strategic partners or groups. And if you want the other pros on LinkedIn to take you seriously, you need to avoid certain behaviors; some of which are perfectly acceptable on other social networks.

So for best results, here are 6 social networking practices you should not to do on LinkedIn…

Frequent Status Updates

People don’t check LinkedIn nearly as often as Facebook or most other Social Networks for that matter. So I recommend that statuses are updated no more than once or twice a day. This is more for your benefit than for your network. If you change too frequently few members of your network will see your updates. So oversimplify here and focus on sharing much less frequently, but try to find highly interesting content that your connections will benefit from.

Connection Spamming

I know you may want to be a first level connection with Mark Zuckerberg or Tim Cook, however random connection requests here are generally not looked upon fondly. If you are looking to grow connections and you don’t care who they are I have two quick pieces of advice. 1. join a LinkedIn Open Network Group (LION) and 2. you are doing it wrong.

Collecting connections is kind of like collecting twitter followers. If they aren’t interested in you, your product, or your service then the connection may not hold much value. (Disclaimer: I know not everyone agrees with this, but unless you are in MLM or something like that, open networking may do nothing more than increase your connection stats) However, with LinkedIn’s ability to show you your 2nd and 3rd level connections, the best way to connect out of the blue is a referral using the introduction request.

And if you really want to give it a go and connect to those you have no relationship with, at the very least include a little note saying why you want to connect and how it may be mutually beneficial.

Profile Picture Faux Pas

First of all, there is no excuse anymore for not having a profile picture. That in itself is a faux pas. However, worse than no pic are those that put their Friday night bender pics at the bar up as their profile pic. Worse yet, the kissing the girlfriend pictures or the can’t find my shirt picture. Nevertheless, this is a “Professional” networking site so while I can’t shame the start up CEO for taking a picture in his favorite T-shirt, I may recommend just for this one picture that you put on a collar, and a quality smile.

Personal Updates

Facebook is a great place to talk about your weekend adventures or great meals out. On Pinterest you can pin the picture of your dinner and you can tweet about it to your followers. On LinkedIn the updates should be professional in nature. So unless it personally has to do with a career change, a published article, or perhaps some good news about your company, LinkedIn isn’t the place for it.

Spammy Selling

There is no better way to annoy your network than to spam your groups and/or connections with an un-targeted sales promotion. I have connections offering promotional products, mobile web development, and financial services on a daily basis. I find these to be incredibly annoying. I do think that using in-mail and very targeted communications can be extremely effective on LinkedIn and that is a much better way to leverage the platform.

Inaccurate Information

Just like Spammy Selling, I don’t recommend this on any platform. I always suggest that people treat LinkedIn just like a resume. While it may or may not be official, you can assume that others view it that way. So if you put it on LinkedIn you should try and make sure it is accurate and can be verified.

Just like Facebook, Twitter, and now Pinterest, LinkedIn is a great Social Network. However, we have to remember it is a “Professional” network and to achieve best results we must use it that way.

How do you maximize your results with LinkedIn? Are there other irritating behaviors on LinkedIn that you often see? Continue the conversation in the Comments section below.

For this post, YouTern Thanks our friends at Millennial CEO!

About the Author: Daniel Newman is the CEO of United Visual Inc; parent company to United Visual Systems, United Visual Productions, and United GlobalComm.
Intern for the US Department of State

<Tagline>Open to Undergraduates and Graduate Students</Tagline>

Announcing the U.S. Department of State Student Experience
Program (formerly known as the U.S. Department of State Internship
    Program).

This program offers U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students
the opportunity to participate in 10-week, unpaid internships that
provide intensive educational and professional experience within the
environment of America’s principle foreign affairs agency.

The unpaid internships are available at many of the over 265 U.S.
embassies, consulates and missions to international organizations around
the world, as well as at the Department of State in Washington, D.C.
and other locations throughout the U.S. Participants gain first-hand,
hands-on experience, and learn the realities of working in – and with –
Foreign and Civil Service professionals who are at the forefront of
    America’s diplomatic efforts.

As a Student Experience intern, you may have the opportunity to:

Participate in meetings with senior level U.S. government or foreign government officials;

Draft, edit, or contribute to cables, reports, communications,
talking points, or other materials used by policy makers in furthering
    U.S. foreign policy objectives;

Help organize and support events, including international and/or
    multi-lateral meetings and conferences on critical global issues;

Contribute to the management and administration of the Department of State and America’s foreign policy; and

Engage directly with U.S. or foreign audiences to promote U.S.
foreign policy and improve understanding of U.S. culture and society.

So consider spending your summer 2013 with the U.S. Department of
State, witnessing and participating in the formulation and
implementation of U.S. foreign policy, working closely with the U.S.
diplomats and civil servants who carry out America’s foreign policy
initiatives. You’ll not only have an experience of a lifetime, you may
    even earn educational credit.*

* Applicants
who are selected for a U.S. Department of State Student Experience can
contact the selecting bureau, or the central Student Programs office, if
they require further details about the program to support their request
     for academic credit.
