So, what’s a typical day like for a White House Intern?

It’s a question I’m often asked, and the honest answer is that there’s no such thing. The White House departments  where they conduct research, manage incoming inquiries, attend meetings, write memos and staff events. Some of the offices where they work include the Office of the First Lady, the Office of Scheduling and Advance, the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, the Office of the White House Counsel, the National Economic Council, the Office of Communications, the Domestic Policy Council and the Office of Digital Strategy.

In addition to their regular duties, each week, White House Interns hear from senior members of the Administration including the First Lady, the Chief of Staff and the White House Counsel. They meet in small groups to discuss policy issues and take off-site field trips to learn more about Washington, D.C. They participate in service projects at non-profits and schools. Not to mention, they spend three months alongside other Interns who are devoted to public service and with whom they build long-lasting friendships.

Today we open the application for the Summer 2012 White House Internship Program. The summer program runs from May 29, 2012 through August 10, 2012, and the application deadline is January 22, 2012.

Start date: Immediately

Completion date: There is no completion date. Successful applicants will work special events throughout the year!

Hours: Part Time. Some evenings and weekends.

Rate of pay: Hourly - exact hourly wage TBD

Primary Responsibilities:

• Guerilla Marketing - hitting the streets, passing out promo items (pens, flyers, door hangers, etc) around Baltimore (mainly focused in Canton, Fed Hill, Fells Pt, Little Italy, Harbor East, Inner Harbor, & Mount Vernon)
• Attending EatBmore.com events to create/collect leads (may require transport of materials (ie: banners, flyers, stickers, etc)
• Inform people about EatBmore via social media
• Take photos of your efforts

Requirements:

Must be available to assist in the pressroom, Room 336 of the Baltimore Convention Center, from Friday, December 2, to Tuesday afternoon, December 6.

Competency in Word and PowerPoint

Good oral communication skills

Desired but not necessary: Some knowledge of epilepsy, Good writing skills, Some experience in public relations or the media, Experience in pitching stories to the media

Responsibilities:

Assists in management of the press room, Assists with media briefings, Checks reporters in, Responds to reporters requests, Answers telephone, Prepares Word documents (of which there will be very few), Prepares PowerPoint slides for LCD rolling in-house news feed, Checks Internet for copies of news reports coming out of the meeting, Maintains binder with hard copies of news reports, Maintains a computer listing of news reports, Updates bulletin board announcements as needed, Helps maintain general appearance of press room, Other tasks as assigned        

Remuneration:

VOLUNTEER INTERN DESCRIPTION:  The State of Maryland, Office of the Public Defender has 12 District offices and 7 Divisions throughout the State of Maryland and is seeking college students and recent graduates to work as interns assisting in the defense of criminal cases in the various county Circuit, District and Juvenile Courts.  The OPD is interested in recruiting volunteer interns, interns for school credit or students who have obtained public interest grants.  Interns assist with support staff duties and may also assist with the attorneys' criminal cases, which range in seriousness from misdemeanor theft to homicide.  The OPD accepts volunteer applications for all semesters and for the summer. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Intern responsibilities include:  answering telephones; data entry; conducting intake; filing motions and legal memoranda; participating in case planning and preparation for trial, hearings, and/or sentencing; and witness coordination.  Interns may also assist attorneys at court hearings and trial in their assigned cases.
