Sustainability Outreach and Communications Intern
Sustainability Outreach and Communications Intern:
Intern will report to Sustainability Coordinator. The position will be 8 hours per week. Hours may vary to accommodate meetings, events, and interviews. Additional tasks may be assigned. Intern must demonstrate evidence of interest and background in sustainability and must feel comfortable reaching out to professionals, peers, and faculty. Intern must be a current UMBC student. Please submit a cover letter detailing: 1) why this position interests you 2) what related skills and experiences you possess 3) any other groups, activities, jobs or time commitments you are currently engaged in by September 26th.
The sustainability outreach and communications intern will assist in developing communication outreach around the following topics in coordination with staff, groups, and committees on campus:

Energy Conservation Efforts
Transportation
Research and Education
Recycling, Waste, and Compost

Joining a corporate office for the first time is often intimidating. You may be regarded as the “new kid” for months (or until another new employee is hired).
This is no reason to lose your confidence, however. Your employer hired you because they felt you would add value to the company – and you will!
Succeeding in the corporate world is a game, and you can win with these 5 strategies (and by avoiding some common mistakes):
1. Be Mindful of Your Actions
Always show people your most confident side and never discount your ideas. While always maintaining a collaborative and willing-to-learn attitude, stand up for yourself.
Mistakes to avoid:
- Polling before making a decision
- Sharing too much personal information
- Needing to be liked
- Being overly concerned with offending others
2. Keep a Success-oriented Mindset
Being new to a company can be overwhelming, but never lose your confidence in yourself. You are great at what you do, that is why you are there. Take advantage of the possibilities your company can offer.
Mistakes to avoid:
- Setting high, unrealistic standards for yourself
- Limiting your possibilities
- Talking yourself out of a promotion you know you deserve
- Abandoning your career goals
3. Brand and Market Yourself As if You Are the Boss
After all, their position is the one you ultimately want to have, right? This goes beyond the over-used “dress for the job you want” advice, however. You must consistently exhibit the drive and professionalism of a higher level than your current position… emphasis on “consistently”.
Mistakes to avoid:
- Minimizing your work or position
- Waiting to be noticed
- Being modest
- Staying in your comfort zone
4. Show You’ve Moved from a College Graduate to a Young Professional
Always be mindful of your tone. When speaking among your colleagues and peers, always be confident that what you are saying holds value, and it will.
Mistakes to avoid:
- Second guessing yourself
- Asking for permission
- Apologizing for your beliefs
- Failing to pause or reflect before answering questions
5. Control How Your Character and Work Ethic Are Perceived
Your response to actions occurring around the office and feedback received from colleagues shows a lot about your character and work ethic. Although negative feedback is criticism, taking it constructively can only help you grow.
Mistakes to avoid:
- Internalizing messages
- Tolerating inappropriate behavior
- Biding your time instead of taking action
- Putting the needs of others before your own
The keys to corporate success mostly revolve around knowing your worth and the value you deliver to your employer. Recognizing this power statement can only bring you great success and happiness.

Spring and Summer Opportunities Available for Engineers
GE Appliances based in Louisville, KY and GE Aviation based in
Cincinnati, OH (co-op housing provided at both locations) are seeking
talented UMBC students to join their staff through co-ops.
Why co-op?
Co-ops
are a special type of internship where you would alternate full-time
work and study with one company for at least 2 full semesters of work.
So for example, you would work full-time with GE for a salary during
Spring 2014. Fall 2014 you could come back to UMBC to take classes and
then Spring 2015 return to your employer. Or you could return for
Summer 2015 to fulfill your commitment.
In addition to the
salary and terrific experience, the best thing about co-ops is that they
are often the pool of students where companies recruit for their
full-time, post-graduate leadership programs. So, if you're interested
in getting a foot in the door with one of the country's top companies, a
co-op is a great way to do it!
If you have additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Workforce Recruitment Program for Students w/Disabilities

The
Workforce Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities
(WRP) is a recruitment and referral program that connects public and
private sector employers nationwide with students and recent graduates
with disabilities who are qualified and interview through the program.
This year they have decided to conduct phone interviews.The deadline to initiate the registration online is September 25, 2013. Deadline to complete the application is September 30, 2013. Phone interviews will be scheduled sometime between October 1st and October 18th.
To
qualify for the program students must have 1) a disability, 2) be a
U.S. Citizen, 3) be a current full-time student or have not graduated
prior to December 2012 (unless the severity of the disability precludes
the student from taking a full-time course load).
To be eligible to interview the student must follow the steps on the attached flyer.
The possible opportunities are for both full-time and internships for all majors.
The
program is run on an annual basis (fall semester). Students who
interviewed with the WRP last semester will need to reapply this
semester.

U.S. Department of State 2014 Summer Student Internship Program (unpaid) is now accepting applications.

This program offers U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in 10-week, unpaid internships that provide intensive educational and professional experience within the environment of America’s principle foreign affairs agency.
The unpaid internships are available at many of the over 265 U.S. embassies, consulates and missions to international organizations around the world, as well as at the Department of State in Washington, D.C. and other locations throughout the U.S. Participants gain first-hand, hands-on experience, and learn the realities of working in – and with – Foreign and Civil Service professionals who are at the forefront of America’s diplomatic efforts.
As an unpaid intern, you may have the opportunity to:
- Participate in meetings with senior level U.S. government or foreign government officials;
- Draft, edit, or contribute to cables, reports, communications, talking points, or other materials used by policy makers in furthering U.S. foreign policy objectives;
- Help organize and support events, including international and/or multi-lateral meetings and conferences on critical global issues;
- Contribute to the management and administration of the Department of State and America’s foreign policy; and
- Engage directly with U.S. or foreign audiences to promote U.S. foreign policy and improve understanding of U.S. culture and society.
So consider spending your Summer 2014 with the U.S. Department of State, witnessing and participating in the formulation and implementation of U.S. foreign policy, working closely with the U.S. diplomats and civil servants who carry out America’s foreign policy initiatives. You’ll not only have an experience of a lifetime, you may even earn educational credit.*

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is responsible for preservation of the permanently valuable records of the federal government. With the advent of an electronic government, the records that are created are being transferred to NARA in a variety of complex and challenging formats. NARA is looking for assistance in developing a practical set of software tools, created through the use of best practices and agile and rapid development methods, which can be used by them and by all federal agencies to prepare such records for transfer, further processing, and preservation.
Well-defined requirements will be developed by NARA IT specialists, and the resulting software written by students will be tested by experienced NARA users. The course will encompass translating these user requirements into practical, production-ready code. The applications that will be developed include a wide variety of interesting projects, including searching through massive volumes of textual and binary file formats for personally identifiable information (PII), automated extraction of metadata from complex formats, positive identification of file formats and verification of file integrity, and many more. In addition, the course will offer the ability to gain experience in various aspects of the software development lifecycle, including source code management and adjudicating user feedback in version releases, all in a real-world, production environment.
