The Scialog: Early Science with LSST Fellowship is a selective program supported by the RCSA that brings together early-career scientists to advance the foundational science needed to maximize the potential of upcoming LSST observations. Over the three-year initiative, fellows participate in annual multi-day workshops designed to foster collaboration and inspire innovative research proposals using LSST data.

Following the first Scialog Fellows workshop in Fall 2024, Dr. Foord’s proposal was one of only eight selected for funding. Her research focuses on building and utilizing a “Dual Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) Finder” to analyze year-1 LSST data, aiming to enhance our understanding of galaxy mergers and supermassive black hole evolution.

UMBC launches new Quantum Science Institute!

UMBC recently launched the Quantum Science Institute (QSI) -- an interdisciplinary research and teaching facility composed of faculty and students from 4 academic departments at UMBC (Physics, CSEE, Math/Stats, and IS). "UMBC has a decades-long history of pioneering research in quantum information science - with people like Yanhua Shih, Mort Rubin, and Jim Franson in the Physics Department, and Sam Lomonoco in CSEE. QSI builds on this foundation with a new generation of fantastic quantum faculty across the campus. It's a great day for quantum at UMBC - we are all very excited by the interdisciplinary nature of QSI" says Dr. Todd Pittman, Professor of Physics and inaugural Director of QSI. The full story on the launch can be found here.
