The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) runs a unique summer program for undergraduate students. The students in your math classes may be interested!

The Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS) Program provides an opportunity for students to work in teams on real-world research projects proposed by a sponsor from industry or a government research lab. Sponsors have included Google, Symantec, Los Alamos National Lab, The Aerospace Corporation, AMD, IBM, and many others.  IPAM covers the students’ travel, housing and most meals, and offers a generous stipend. 

In addition to RIPS in Los Angeles, IPAM will offer RIPS-Singapore in 2019 in partnership with the National University of Singapore.  U.S. undergrads will work with students from South-East Asia on projects sponsored by companies based in the region.  The format is the same as RIPS-LA, but the programs have different dates.  English is the only language required for participation. 

Please encourage your students, especially women and underrepresented minorities, to apply.  Past successful applicants came from quantitative majors, such as mathematics, statistics, computer science or theoretical physics and had a strong mathematics background and some programming skills.    The RIPS web site at http://www.ipam.ucla.edu/rips/ provides detailed information and a link to the online application. The deadline for applications is February 12, 2019.  (Note: graduating seniors are eligible for both programs; international students may apply for RIPS-LA only).
