Computing for the Social Sciences

The Computer Science & Electrical Engineering Department

is offering a section of

CMSC 201 Computer Science I

exclusively for majors in the social sciences.

•No programming experience is necessary.

•You do **not** need to be a Computer Science major.

•Course assignments and projects will emphasize skills such as statistical analysis, working with large data sets, and data visualization.

CMSC 201 Computer Science I, 4 credits

Lecture: 6572, Section 18-LEC, Tues/Thur 2:30-3:45

Lab: 6573, Section 19-DIS, Tues 11:30-12:20 OR

6575, Section 20-DIS, Tues 4:00-4:50

Prerequisite:

•Completed MATH 150 or MATH 151 or MATH 152 with a C or better, OR

•Have MATH test placement into MATH 151, OR

•Completed MATH 155 with a C or better, OR

•Concurrent enrollment in CMSC 201 and MATH 155

Course Description: An introduction to computer science through problem solving and computer programming. Programming techniques covered by this course include modularity, abstraction, top-down design, specifications documentation, debugging and testing. The core material for this course includes control structures, functions, lists, strings, abstract data types, file I/O, and recursion.
