From the RAP-EMCC program director:
It has been another productive year for our new Research Associate Program in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care at the School of medicine.
For those who are not familiar with our program, we started the program in the Spring of 2016 with a small group as a pilot program. By the Summer of 2017, there are almost 30 undergraduate students participating with the program, with support from the Department of Emergency Medicine. Our students have been participating in both prospective projects to enroll and evaluate critically ill patients' cognitive functions. As option, they also participate in retrospective studies and lectures about research methodologies.
As a result of their hard work, we are continuing to screen and enroll patients with traumatic brain injury, patients who need Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) every day. Additionally, we are also productive.
In the spring 2017, we presented 3 abstracts at the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) with 6 students, from the original small group, as co-authors. By August 2017, 2 students from our first small group were accepted and matriculated in medical schools.
Five of our students presented our findings at regional conferences in the Fall of 2016 (Safar Critical Care Symposium) and Spring 2017 (Mid-Atlantic Society of Academic Emergency Medicine)
Furthermore, with the students' help in retrospective studies, three (3) abstracts have been accepted for publications at the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) in October 2017.
Our group also assisted in the submission of additional 6 abstracts to the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) in August 2017, their official results are still pending. If these abstracts are accepted for publications, everyone in our program will have at least one published abstract for the applications. We will update you when their results are available.
We will plan to invite a few more students to join our group in the Spring 2018 as current students will leave the program to pursue other priorities. Our program will continue to strive to provide undergraduate students with research experience, publications, with the goal to make their professional applications more competitive.
