University of Florida, College of Medicine

  <Tagline>Summary of This Week's Meeting</Tagline>

The University of Florida College of Medicine (UFCOM) presented to the Pre-Medical Society this week information about their medical school.

Their school receives about 5000 applications per cycle. They offer about 300 interviews and they accept about 150 students. Their average GPA is 3.8 for science classes. They have an average MCAT score of 515. In terms of diversity, their accepted students from the last cycle come from 56 different undergraduate institutions, they have a 53:47 ratio in terms of female to male accepted students, 26 percent of their students were population minorities and 13 percent were first-generation college students.

Like many medical schools, UFCOM performs a holistic review on an application. They look for an applicant’s medical experience with patients and physicians. They look for letters of recommendations that must add value beyond what the admissions committee already knows through other parts of the application. UFCOM values students who are “other-centered”, those who put the comfort and convenience of others first before themselves.

UFCOM offers an MD-PhD program.

The UFCOM admissions committee prefers some committee letters over others. For example, Ms. Juliet Hill, the spokesperson for the UFCOM admissions committee, states that some universities provide “narrative” committee letters that do not add more information to the application about the applicant. Ms. Hill says such letters are unhelpful. However, she does mention that some committees offer helpful letters. Ultimately, it depends on how your university’s admissions committee writes its letters.

Presentation by Dr. Kim Joseph

  <Tagline>Summary of October 19th Meeting</Tagline>

On November 19, 2021, Dr. Kimberly Joseph, a surgeon who attended UMBC as an undergraduate, gave us a presentation about her journey through medicine.

Dr. Joseph describes how she double-majored in social work and biological sciences at UMBC. She did undergraduate research in botany with Dr. Thomas Marsho. Furthermore, she was heavily involved in the Ambassador’s Club and she obtained medical experience by working in Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.

Upon applying to medical school, she was accepted into many institutions, but she ultimately chose Columbia University. At Columbia, she received great support from the Black and Latin Student Organization, had great mentors and worked in pediatrics, the medical ICU and the breast surgery department.

Upon applying to residency, she matched at University of Illinois, Cook County Hospital. It was there that she decided that she wanted to focus her career around trauma. Also, during residency, she performed research during her second and third year. After her residency, Dr. Joseph did a fellowship at the Cook County Trauma Unit. During this time, she became heavily involved in ICU work.

As her career progressed, Dr. Joseph returned to her “social work roots”. She conducted violence prevention programs in Chicago public schools. She started a trauma unit for child abuse/neglect, intimate partner violence and substance use disorder. She also helped recruit a social worker and a chaplain to start a hospital-based violence intervention program. Furthermore, she formed a partnership with ceasefire, a hospital-linked violence interrupter program. She emphasized during her presentation that she could not have easily done all of this without a medical degree because she believed that more people were inclined to do what she told them because of her status as a medical doctor.

Dr. Joseph retired in 2017 but she still holds roles in the medical community. She is the national chair of the Advanced Trauma Life Support Course for the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons. She is also still active in the surgical section of the National Medical Association.

Her full presentation can be viewed in the recording link below:

  <Tagline>Summary of October 29th Meeting</Tagline>

On October 29th
Noah Gold and Nicholas Grice, our club officers, gave information about the
MCAT's content and what they experienced when they took the lengthy and
    demanding exam.

The exam is approximately eight
hours with intermittent breaks. Noah emphasized the clever the use of these
breaks throughout his presentation so that the test-taker stays energized and
    does not waste test-taking time.

The first section of the MCAT asks
about the “Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems”. This part
deals with biochemistry, general chemistry, organic chemistry and physics. The
section has 59 questions and is 95 minutes long. It is recommended that a
test-taker spends eight minutes per passage and one minute per discrete question.

The second section is called the “Critical
Analysis and Reasoning Skills” section. The content in this section asks the
test-taker about “reasoning within the text”, “reasoning beyond the text” and “foundations
of comprehension”. It features 53 questions for 90 minutes. It is recommended that
you spend 10 minutes per passage for the 9 passages in the section. Both Noah
and Nicholas did not fail to mention that these passages can be about anything,
like history, culture, geography or even farming.

“Biological and Biochemical Foundations
of Living Systems” is the third section. The content features biochemistry,
introductory biology and a small amount of general and organic chemistry. The
section features 59 questions for 95 minutes. It is recommended that you spend
eight minutes per passage with one minute per discrete question.

Lastly, the “Psychological, Social
and Biological Foundations of Behavior” is the final section of the MCAT. This
features content about psychology, sociology and a small amount of introductory
biology. This section has 59 questions that you must complete in 95 minutes. It
is recommended you spend eight minutes per passage and one minute per discrete
    question.

Also, when studying for the MCAT, both Noah and Nicholas used the Kaplan book sets.
