Duke University School of Medicine

  <Tagline>Summary of October 22nd Meeting</Tagline>

On October 22nd, the associate dean of admissions for Duke University School of Medicine (DukeMed), Dr. Linton Yee, presented information about the application process of DukeMed and what is expected of
    applicants.

Dr. Yee emphasized the mental requirements DukeMed has for its applicants; they are expected to be compassionate, resilient, critical thinkers,
emotionally intelligent, optimistic, etc. DukeMed is looking for students who
are future leaders in medicine, committed to caring for others, well-rounded and tolerant. Applicants need to show clinical experience on their
application, which can include working in EMS, scribing, working in a crisis
center hotline, hospice or hospital and shadowing. Students are also encouraged
to take part in research before applying to DukeMed. For the MD/PhD program,
applicants typically have amassed at least two years of research.

During the application process, DukeMed is known to have a vast
amount of essay questions on their secondary application. These questions can ask
about how COVID-19 has affected the applicant, the applicant’s leadership,
resilience, critical thinking, advocacy and more.

Furthermore, during the interview process, DukeMed conducts
multiple “mini-interviews” instead of the traditional one-on-one interview.
This involves the use of multiple “stations” where the applicant is asked about
    their ethics, morals, teamwork, etc.

All of this information and more can be found on
the PowerPoint slides used by Dr. Yee during the meeting. Those slides are attached to
    this post.

NIH OxCam Program

  <Tagline>Summary of November 11th's Meeting</Tagline>

November 11th's meeting had a presentation by Neha Wali, a UMBC alumnus currently in an MD/PhD program in the South Texas Medical Scientist Training Program. She is in the NIH OxCam Program, which allows her to pursue a joint PhD between the National Cancer Institute and Oxford University. Here are some of the highlights of the presentation:

This is a good program for students who are independent and don't need a structured experience, and those who are problem-solvers not easily discouraged. Students should be able to work well across two continents, labs, and PIs. They should also enjoy traveling, meeting new people, and having new experiences.

Basic program outline:

Participants generally finish their PhD in 4 years. There is no official coursework. Students usually apply as a graduate student, where you don't have a connection to medical school. Otherwise students currently applying to medical schools can also apply, then apply later to UK schools or students currently in MD/PhD programs can apply (easiest path).

While there is no application fee for OxCam, there are UK application fees associated with Oxford for accepted students.

The application opened on August 3rd this year, and the deadline is December 1st. Applicants are notified in January, and interviews take place in February. The interview is only 25 minutes, and with longer time periods to talk to current program members and PIs, and attend info sessions.

Applications are viewed holistically. You don't have to already have a PI when applying to OxCam, but it is helpful to be in conversations with potential PIs.

When applying to medical school in general, a high MCAT and mediocre GPA is preferable to a mediocre MCAT and a high GPA. Students should apply to about 30 schools, but have a backup plan. For MD/PhD, you should generally have at least a thousand research hours. Having a published work is not required, but is recommended.

The slides presented are attached to this post. You can also find a recording of the meeting at the following WebEx link: https://umbc.webex.com/umbc/ldr.php?RCID=3dc33ab12a8e4277981e1d4a4465c443

Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine

  <Tagline>Summary of November 4th's Meeting</Tagline>

During our last general body meeting a representative of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, Dr. Prusakowski, talked about the school's medical program.

VTC is a four-year allopathic medical school with a strong base in research and inquiry. The school is in Roanoke, VA in the southwestern part of the state. It is in a mountainous area, providing students a variety of outdoor activities.

They have a class size of 49 students. Relationship-building and collaborative work are a major part of school culture. Classes use a problem-based approach. Mentorship is also prioritized by staff members, and there are programs and resources to guide students through medical school. There is a pass/fail grading system, to encourage student collaboration. Additionally, research is required for all students who attend.

Year one consists of four eight-week blocks with breaks for studying, research, and then winter break. Interactions with patients begin as early as the second week during the first year. Fourth year is rotations in clinical care, clerkships, electives, etc.

The Carilion clinic system consists of over 730 physicians in over 80 specialties. They have a 1.7 million patient population, and are very diverse.

When applying, talk about your passions. In terms of experience, VTC is looking for medical volunteering, community volunteering, research, leadership, and teamwork.

A MCAT 504 minimum is needed for the secondary application. For the secondary application, you should assume that admissions has already looked at the primary application. Enrich your record and include new perspectives and further details. Submit materials on time. CASPer test is also required for those who qualify for the secondary application.

Interviews are two-fold: a traditional interview with a member of admissions and structured scenario questions with community members. About 4.5 to 6.5% of applicants are being interviewed this year. Prior to the interview, make sure you know a few important things: information about the school, "why medicine", and "why this school"? Be confident and make sure to show why you are unique.

Applications are looked at holistically: even if you have a low MCAT score, you can still get admission if you show enough commitment to medicine.

Tuition is the same for in-state versus out-of-state students.

During October 28th's GBM a representative of Mount Sinai attended the meeting to give a brief presentation.

Medical schools are looking for applicants who posses the traits of a physician: a team player, a lifelong learner, a leader for change, an advocate, and so forth. Mt. Sinai is specifically looking for students with academic excellence, research experience, service activities, and commitment to clinical medicine.

During the application process, students should make sure to stress the highlights of their experiences. Explain and describe these experiences in detail, and avoid making them just one or two sentences. Applicants should also only consider applying to schools with have culture and mission statements that correspond with their personal values. This makes the application process far more meaningful.

It is important to focus on the social determinants of health and their impact. While the MCAT and GPA are important, they are not the only things that matter--extracurriculars and community service go a long way to describe an applicant and their personality.

For letters of recommendation, students should make sure to ask people that know more about them and who they are as a person rather than those who can talk about testing and grades.

Mt. Sinai has early assurance programs and connections with a few universities. Their flex MD program allows sophomores to apply and get into medical school after their undergrad career.
Brian Milsted came into October 21st's meeting to talk about the Drexel University College of Medicine.

Drexel UCOM is in Philadelphia. The city is somewhat similar to Baltimore, and there are areas of poverty that Drexel students work to serve and improve conditions for. There are also clinics and medical centers for different causes and interests within the city (such as women's health). There is a new campus being established in Reding, PA which is a more suburban/rural community.

Admissions is looking for well-rounded applicants who show commitment to medicine. More experiences expose students to more experiences and make them a better applicant. However quality is more valuable than quantity. Community involvement is especially valuable, both as an applicant and as a physician. Applicants whose values align with Drexel's mission are more likely to get accepted. They suggest students to show their interests continuously.

Find a way to get involved virtually, especially for students who are applying in upcoming cycles. This might be a way to learn more about how medicine is evolving during the pandemic, for example.

Gap years are a great way to get more experience. Students can also re-apply during a gap year.

There is a research scholar track, similar to a minor, that students interested in research can pursue. However Drexel is not a research-heavy school. There is also an MD/PhD program.

For students interested in practicing overseas, the Global Health Program can be helpful.

Last year there were 12,000 applications, and the average GPA of the incoming class was a 3.64
