SOCY 396 Info Session ~ Monday,September 19th ~ 12pm: https://umbc.webex.com/meet/elgrose1

Are you interested in learning more about the application of social science to service learning and community engagement? Would you like the opportunity to build your resume via an internship with social science connections and reflections?

If so, SOCY 396 will appeal to you! This is our optional sociology internship credit. This is a wonderful resume builder and a unique opportunity to combine community work with social science reflections. We have a new instructor for the course, Eloise Grose, who has her BA in Anthropology and her Master's in International Training and Education. She's worked in non-profits and service learning for over 2 decades and is a wonderful resource. Students will work with a non-profit organization, while earning UMBC credit and meeting with an instructor to discuss the experience, reflect on the social science themes and service learning leadership skills obtained, etc. All of this is wonderful preparation for the job market and for job interviews, as well as a chance to meet other students and people working in the community who are dedicated to improving the world through effective service to the community. For example, one service learning site is Soccer Without Borders. It's 3.6 miles from campus (carpools available) and students participate in 1 hour of soccer (no experience needed), then provide 1 hour of TESOL and tutoring under the training and direction of the organization leaders. Or, in the words of UMBC's Shriver Center, "These collaborative experiences create opportunities to pursue passion with purpose and connect curiosity with compassion."

Want to learn more?

The instructor (Eloise Grose) will be holding a Q&A session 1 week from today on Monday, September 19th (12pm, free hour) at her WebEx: https://umbc.webex.com/meet/elgrose1

If you cannot make the webinar or would like to go ahead and enroll in SOCY 396, then contact Eloise Grose directly (CC:ed here) at: elgrose1@umbc.edu She can send you the information for 3 credits of SOCY 396. These credits count toward your upper level general education credits at UMBC (but not toward minor or major electives, unfortunately). Students have until October 5th to sign up for SOCY 396.

This is a great opportunity for Public Health Minors to receive internship opportunities and notations on their transcripts. Majors can take advantage of this opportunity regardless of their year at UMBC, and with fewer hours-per-week commitment than their required internship (PBHL 470).

Below is some additional information about Service-Learning and Community Engagement at UMBC, which reflect the values and goals of the SOCY 396 credits:

    SERVICE-LEARNING & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT VISION
The Shriver Center’s Service-Learning & Community Engagement (SLCE) program seeks to create space and pathways in which students, faculty, and staff deepen understanding of community needs and assets and develop relations with community partners to bring about positive, systemic change. UMBC’s academic excellence and inclusive culture encourages thoughtfulness about one’s role in this global community. Authentic partnerships have the capacity to address community needs through structured involvement and discourse with a social justice lens. The SLCE program collaborates with UMBC students, faculty, and staff to engage with the community. These collaborative experiences create opportunities to pursue passion with purpose and connect curiosity with compassion.

The Student Learning Outcomes for Community Service & Learning are:

The RA will be directly supervised by Professor Nayak. Responsibilities will include conducting literature reviews, abstracting information for a systematic review, developing presentations, assisting with editing and writing scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication, and

In a nutshell

Contract Specialists are responsible for writing, negotiating, awarding, and monitoring contracts between CMS and external contractors. The Contract Specialist position encompasses the administration of contracts for services, materials, and equipment associated with health administration, health research, regulatory compliance, human services administration, test evaluation, health operations, and or production activities of one or more HHS organizations. They interpret and comply with Federal laws and regulations, but use their creativity and innovation to develop flexible contracting approaches to assist some of the most vulnerable populations.
