HAPP Grading Choices for Spring 2020

<Tagline>Make sure you select your options carefully</Tagline>

The University has allowed for all students to change their grading method to P/F, or to take a late withdrawal for spring 2020 classes. Remember, there are several conditions you need to consider before changing from graded to P/F.

HAPP core and track classes will only count towards your graduation requirements if you have a C or better in graded method. Classes will not count if you change the method to P/F. If you change your method to P/F and have a Pass you will still need to retake that class in order to graduate as a HAPP major or minor.

The HAPP internship (HAPP 470) will count towards graduation requirements in either graded (C or better) or as a pass in P/F. You CAN change to P/F for 470 for spring 2020 and graduate with a P in that class.

HAPP elective classes will count towards the graduation requirements in either graded or as a pass in P/F. This includes all classes in HAPP, as well as other departments. If you are taking a HAPP class as an elective, even if it is a core requirement in another track, you can elect to change from graded to P/F and count the class with a pass.

Keep graduate school admission requirements in mind when switching to P/F if your grade is still a C or better. Selective programs may assume the original grade was a D in graded method, and it may make you less competitive. Check with your prospective programs if this applies to you.

If you have any questions about the best option for your circumstances you should contact your advisor!

I am sure most of you have received the news that our department is changing it's name! We are now the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Public Health. I also know that many of you have questions about what that means for you, as a HAPP student. We are still the Health Administration and Policy Program. For some time now we have been exploring the best way to represent our students and faculty. We will still offer the same program, curriculum, and courses to our current and future students, regardless of the name of the major.

Highlighting public health in our department is not only representative of the impact public health has on health administration and health policy, but on other disciplines within and outside our department. The current pandemic illustrates the wide reach of public health in a very tangible way! If and when the program name changes, you will be among the first to know. In the meantime, we are HAPPy to be HAPP!

HAPP and UMBC Distance Learning

<Tagline>We are ready for online learning!</Tagline>

Hello HAPP majors! I am sure you have gotten word that we will not be returning to campus for the remainder of the semester. This is a big adjustment for everyone, but we are looking forward to seeing you, virtually, next week in our online classrooms. UMBC has been working to transition to all online learning for the remainder of the semester, and your HAPP instructors have been working to move their material to some type of online platform.

Most of your instructors will probably be using Blackboard to deliver content. Make sure you are familiar with Blackboard, and are able to access it regularly to complete your assignments. Most instructors have contacted their classes to let them know what to expect moving forward. If you haven't received a notice from you instructor yet, look at the announcements page in Blackboard for that class. If you still don't see something, please be patient. This is a big change for everyone, and some instructors may still be deciding how to approach their material online.

Advising will be conducted remotely as well. The original timeline is still in place, so make sure you set up a virtual appointment with your advisor if you have not yet done so.

UMBC is still open, even though campus is not widely in use. If you need any kind of UMBC services look for a way to contact that office through email. Some offices on campus will remain accessible, such as University Health Services, The Counseling Center (video chat appointments), and Retriever Essentials. Please do not come to campus though unless you need these few resources, and always make an appointment ahead of time. Most buildings will be locked, and only a few essential employees will be there. Almost all employees will be working from home for the rest of the semester. If you need assistance with anything feel free to contact your advisor or me. We can either help you or send you to someone who can help you.

It is possible that some of you will become ill or will be taking care of family members that are ill. Please let your instructor know as soon as possible if this is the case. You also may have other things, like family or work take your attention. This is to be expected. Again, just let your instructor know. We will be adding back-up instructors to each class. This should help to minimize disruptions if one of us gets ill. We also realize that the internet and Blackboard will cause problems. Don't stress about this, it won't be perfect, but we will all do our best.

If you do not have adequate equipment to participate in online learning, please let us know ASAP! I do think the University is currently trying to address this issue. This could include hardware, like a laptop, or a reliable internet connection. This could also be because the whole family is home sharing limited electronic resources.

Our interns should be in contact with Professor Cozart. We are working to find ways for you to complete your internship remotely, or to complete your hours when restrictions are lifted. Please keep in mind that we do not know when restrictions will be lifted. Summer internships are pending at this point.

Lastly, I expect you have heard that the previously scheduled graduation ceremony will not be happening in May. I don't yet know if the University is making plans for some other type of ceremony. HAPP is so very proud of you and all your accomplishments! We will figure out some way to recognize your graduation. I don't yet know what this will look like, but you will have a unique graduation experience!

Enjoy your last few days of break (with social distance). Let us know if we can help in any way. Wash your hands!
