UMBC SGA's Legislative Branch has vacancies!!
UMBC SGA's Senate & Finance Board have vacancies for the Spring 2017 semester!
We are currently seeking motivated students interested in working on initiatives with the UMBC campus to make positive change.
Senate meets every Monday evening at 5:30pm, meetings are held in Commons 318. You will be required to stay for the duration of the meeting, which have no end time and have been know to run as late as 11:00pm. In addition to attending meetings, Senators are required to be a member of at least two Shared Governance Committees on campus that meet at various times, and work on initiatives around campus.
Finance Board meets every Tuesday evening at 5:30pm, also in Commons 318. The Finance Board has openings for both Finance Board Members and First Year Ambassadors. All members of the board are expected to attend the meetings in their entirety, which have been know to run past 11:00pm at times.
Applications will be available until Wednesday, February 1st at 11:59 pm.

Election Night Extravaganza Needs Volunteers!

Every four years, the Student Government Association proudly holds the non-partisan Election Night Extravaganza as we await the announcement of our newly elected President, and to celebrate American democracy. The night will be filled with conversations and debates, games, music, prizes, pizza, and lots of balloons! Our goal is to make this election season an experience shared by our UMBC community where we all get involved and excited about political elections, and celebrate our democracy.
Election Night Extravaganza is designed by, the SGA, in collaboration with (seb), Resident Student Association, College Democrats, and College Republicans - and we need your help!
We are looking for volunteers throughout the night of Election Night Extravaganza in a variety of positions. Volunteers must attend the Mandatory Volunteer Meeting on 10/26/16 in ITE 102 from 12pm - 1pm, and be available from 4:30pm - 1:30am (there will be ample breaks, and you will not work the entire time!) at the event on 11/8/16.

Join us as we prepare for the 2016 Election Season!
Every four years, the Student Government Association proudly holds the non-partisan Election Night Extravaganza as we await the announcement of our newly elected President, and to celebrate American democracy. The night will be filled with conversations and debates, games, music, prizes, pizza, and lots of balloons! Our goal is to make this election season an experience shared by our UMBC community where we all get involved and excited about political elections, and celebrate our democracy.
In the weeks leading up the night of Election Night Extravaganza, the SGA, in collaboration with (seb), Resident Student Association, College Democrats, and College Republicans, will be holding events to build hype around Election Day. sga@umbc.edu SGA is pleased to announce the new "General Meetings." Various departments and branches of the organization meet weekly - however, SGA rarely meets as a large group in a meeting. While we will continue to hold these weekly meetings, there might be a perception that those meetings are intimidating and don’t foster a welcoming environment for students interested in getting involved as well as they should. SGA wants to create a space for meaningful conversations about problems, challenges, and issues faced by our UMBC community. General Meetings are designed to address just that.
Each month, the SGA will facilitate conversations around topics that are “hot button” issues in our campus community. The meeting will begin with updates from SGA’s Executive Branch (including Department Directors) and Legislative Branch (Senate and Finance Board). These updates will help our UMBC community understand what exactly our SGA has been working on. Afterwards, we will begin our themed discussion in small groups. At the end of the night, we will determine next steps to make real change on campus.
The goal of the General Meetings is to do the following:
Provide a venue for SGA officials to share updates with the UMBC community
Increase SGA’s commitment of transparency
Networking opportunity for students to meet a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff for projects and initiatives
Discuss real problems on campus, and determine actionable initiatives
Get every person in our campus involved with SGA!

Government is to join a department that interests you. The SGA has eight
departments: Academic Affairs, Communications, Community & Service, Diversity & Multicultural Affairs, Environmental Affairs, Institutional Affairs & Student Advocacy, Health & Wellness, and Leadership Development. Each department focuses on a different
area of policy and is organized under a Director and Assistant Director. To be
placed in a department of your choice, just fill out the form below!

The SGA is looking for experienced, motivated
students to take on leadership positions in the Executive Branch Departments,
Student Organization Support Team, and Financial Support Team. These positions
come with significant responsibilities and are valuable opportunities to work
on issues that matter to you while cultivating relationships with UMBC
students, staff, and faculty. Please see below for a listing of open positions.

Open Positions in the Executive Branch:
Department Director and Assistant Director - Will be responsible for organizing department projects and
initiatives, holding regular departmental meetings, cultivating relationships
with students, staff, and faculty, and generally managing the day-to-day
administration of the department. The Assistant Director is expected to support
the Director in all of the above expectations and to take responsibility in the
absence of the Department Director. Here is a description of all of the Departments of SGA.

Chief of Staff -
Will serve as a point of contact for all Executive Cabinet positions and advise
them in the absence of the President and Executive Vice President. Additional
responsibilities of the position include collecting and consolidating bi-weekly
reports from all coordinators and department directors, enforcing office hours
of all paid members of SGA, organizing regular executive branch meetings, and
maintaining communication between the branches of SGA.

Coordinator of Internal Affairs - Will be expected to organize the official SGA calendar, respond
to students who enter the office with questions about SGA, enforce office hours
of all paid members of SGA, ensure that office supplies are in stock, perform
basic computer maintenance, and generally take responsibility for the
day-to-day administration of the SGA office.

Executive Aide to the President - Will work closely with the SGA President (Bentley Corbett) and
be expected to manage the President’s official tasks such as, calendar, social
media, and other organizational tools. It is expected that the Executive Aide
possess excellent organizational skills and be ready to take on all related
responsibilities as necessary.

Webmaster -
Will be expected to maintain the status and update the content of the SGA website. Requires regular communication with many members of both the
Executive and Legislative Branches. This position requires a background in web
development and/or programming, and will be responsible for some social media.

Support Team:
Director of SOS - Will partner with the VPSO (Sanjum Singh) to develop initiatives
and help advise clubs and organizations on campus. Responsibilities include
managing SOS members and developing new strategies to increase student
involvement in various areas on campus.

Director of Athletic Relations - Will oversee relations between the athletic department, SGA,
and other related clubs and organizations on campus. Responsibilities include
increasing athletic participation on campus and maximizing resources available

SOS Events Coordinator - Will help plan, organize, and execute any events to support

The easiest way to get involved in Student
Government is to join a department that interests you. The SGA has eight
departments: Academic Affairs, Communications, Community & Service, Diversity & Multicultural Affairs, Environmental Affairs, Institutional Affairs & Student Advocacy, Health & Wellness, and Leadership Development. Each department focuses on a different
area of policy and is organized under a Director and Assistant Director. To be
placed in a department of your choice, just fill out the form below!

The SGA is looking for experienced, motivated
students to take on leadership positions in the Executive Branch Departments,
Student Organization Support Team, and Financial Support Team. These positions
come with significant responsibilities and are valuable opportunities to work
on issues that matter to you while cultivating relationships with UMBC
students, staff, and faculty. Please see below for a listing of open positions.
You may apply for more than one position. The deadline for the following

Open Positions in the Executive Branch:
Department Director and Assistant Director - Will be responsible for organizing department projects and
initiatives, holding regular departmental meetings, cultivating relationships
with students, staff, and faculty, and generally managing the day-to-day
administration of the department. The Assistant Director is expected to support
the Director in all of the above expectations and to take responsibility in the
absence of the Department Director. Here is a description of all of the Departments of SGA.

Chief of Staff -
Will serve as a point of contact for all Executive Cabinet positions and advise
them in the absence of the President and Executive Vice President. Additional
responsibilities of the position include collecting and consolidating bi-weekly
reports from all coordinators and department directors, enforcing office hours
of all paid members of SGA, organizing regular executive branch meetings, and
maintaining communication between the branches of SGA.

Coordinator of Internal Affairs - Will be expected to organize the official SGA calendar, respond
to students who enter the office with questions about SGA, enforce office hours
of all paid members of SGA, ensure that office supplies are in stock, perform
basic computer maintenance, and generally take responsibility for the
day-to-day administration of the SGA office.

Executive Aide to the President - Will work closely with the SGA President (Bentley Corbett) and
be expected to manage the President’s official tasks such as, calendar, social
media, and other organizational tools. It is expected that the Executive Aide
possess excellent organizational skills and be ready to take on all related
responsibilities as necessary.

Webmaster -
Will be expected to maintain the status and update the content of the SGA website. Requires regular communication with many members of both the
Executive and Legislative Branches. This position requires a background in web
development and/or programming, and will be responsible for some social media.

Support Team:
Director of SOS - Will partner with the VPSO (Sanjum Singh) to develop initiatives
and help advise clubs and organizations on campus. Responsibilities include
managing SOS members and developing new strategies to increase student
involvement in various areas on campus.

Director of Athletic Relations - Will oversee relations between the athletic department, SGA,
and other related clubs and organizations on campus. Responsibilities include
increasing athletic participation on campus and maximizing resources available
to athletics to further collaboration between other clubs and organizations.
They will also share a seat on the Athletic Policy Committee.

SGA Senate Passes Just Food Resolution
On Monday, April 18th, 2016, the UMBC SGA Senate passed the Just Food resolution that supports the Real Food Campus commitment. Just Food has been working the past two years to establish Real food on campus and is looking to establish a relationship with student government in order to reflect the student voice at UMBC.
Real food is defined as local, organic, humane, and fair. Just Food UMBC stances are:
Purpose: To promote a sustainable and just food system at UMBC by connecting our campus dining to the local agricultural community.
Goal: By 2020, reallocate 20% of our University food budget to food that is organically grown without harmful chemicals, located within 250 miles of our campus, operate on fair trade agreements, and/or raise and kill animals humanely. Provide students with the agency to work with UMBC dining services to maintain these new standards.
The national average for campuses for Real food is 3-7%. 20% is negotiable and hinges on the results of the invoice audit. While the earliest the audit could be concluded is the end of Fall 2016, we will also have a helpful estimate through Towson’s team at the end of Spring 2016. Towson is also a Chartwells school. We are hoping with our efforts along with this resolution of student support to aid us in acquiring the dining audit in order to move forward in our goal of 20% Real Food on campus.
The resolution shows support to Just Food’s initiative and creates solidarity among student body. This resolution along with survey responses from Just Food and building relationships with Dining Services will enable us to move forward and urge President Freeman Hrabowski to sign the Real Food Campus commitment.

SGA Stipend Review Committee Proposal - Call for Feedback
A new accountability system being considered for next year
SGA is looking to implement a new accountability system beginning next academic year - the Stipend Review Committee (SRC). Proposed by Senators Josh Massey and Collin Sullivan, the SRC will ensure each SGA officer who receives a stipend is completing the job you, the students, hired them for. The SRC will not act as a grounds for impeachment if a member does not receive their stipend - however, it may prompt for further investigation from other members in the SGA. All decisions made by the SRC will be made publicly available via
the new SGA website and the
SGA group on myUMBC.
After a few weeks of discussions with the SGA Senate and Finance Board, we are opening this up to the student body for review. We would love to hear feedback from you regarding this new system. Please review
