  <Title>Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland Seeks Interns</Title>

    <p><span>The
    Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland is looking for college interns interested
    in learning more and contributing to raising awareness about issues affecting
    Maryland’s African-American communities. </span></p>
    <p><span><br>
    </span><span>The
    interns
     will help by researching current issues, attending and preparing
    summaries of legislative hearings, and supporting Caucus activities. 
    Communications interns will be instrumental in telling the story 
    Maryland's African-American communities. </span></p>
    <p><span><br>
    </span><span>Interns
    will also be exposed to the work of a legislative caucus. They will gain
    experience to be more competitive in the job market. Interns will have
    opportunities to attend hearings, meetings centered on education, policy, and
    related subjects.<br>
    <br>
    The internship is ideal for students who are interested in public policy, HBCU
    funding, education reform, and family and community outreach. Interns should
    have excellent writing skills, research capabilities, be detail oriented, and
    the ability to work on a team and individually.<br>
    <br>
    Interns will be expected to work 12-20 hours a week. Ideally, an intern will be
    available, at minimum, three days per week including Thursdays 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.,
    January–May 2013. The internship is located in the Lowe House Office Building,
    Annapolis, MD. Interviews will be conducted December 10-14, 2012. </span></p>

    <li><div><span>Malaria is endemic in more than 90 countries. <br>  </span></div></li>
    <li><div><span>Forty percent of the world population is at risk for malaria. <br>  </span></div></li>
    <li><div><span>Ten percent of world population gets sick each year with malaria.</span></div></li>
    </ul>
    <p><span><strong>DEATH BY MALARIA</strong></span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><div><span>Number of fatal cases of malaria each year: over 1 million<br>  </span></div></li>

    <Title>Paid Summer Research with Amgen Scholars</Title>

          <div class="html-content">The Amgen Scholars U.S. Program provides hundreds of selected undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in a hands-on research experience at some of the nation’s leading educational institutions. Currently, 10 universities in the U.S. host the summer research program.<br><br>Inspiring the Scientists of Tomorrow<br>As Amgen Scholars, students will have the opportunity to:<br>• Take part in important university research projects, gain hands-on lab<br>experience and contribute to the advancement of science;<br>• Interact with and receive guidance from faculty mentors, including some of the nation’s top academic scientists; and<br>• Attend scientific seminars, workshops and other networking events.<br><br>The Amgen Scholars U.S. Symposium<br>A signature component of the summer program is a mid-summer, three-day symposium where students hear firsthand from leading scientists working in industry and academia. The U.S. symposium is held in California and provides students with a valuable opportunity to network with other Amgen Scholars from across the U.S.<br><br>Financial Support<br>Financial support is a critical component of the Amgen Scholars Program. Please note that details vary by host university. See each university’s summer research program website for more information.<br><br>Eligibility<br>Amgen Scholars U.S. Program applicants must be:<br>• U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents;<br>• Undergraduate students enrolled in accredited four-year colleges or<br>universities in the United States, Puerto Rico or other U.S. territories; and<br>• Sophomores (with four quarters or three semesters of college experience), juniors or non-graduating seniors (who are returning in the fall to continue undergraduate studies).<br><br>U.S. program applicants must also have:<br>• A cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or above; and<br>• An interest in pursuing a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D.<br><br>Each U.S. host university has its own application process. The participating intern will work at the Chesapeake Bay Trust during the winter semester at a rate of $10 per hour, with a minimum of four hours per week and a maximum of 10 hours per week; an opportunity to transition into a full-time intern for ten weeks during the months of June, July, and August may also be available.  Duties at the Trust during the winter semester include administrative, grant project related, communications/development tasks; duties at the Trust during the summer months includes the description above as well as field work to assess the success of small-scale community-based projects funded by the Trust, grant work, and an independent project of the student’s choosing.  <br><br>Eligible applicants must be graduate or undergraduate students attending a two- or four-year college or university in Maryland with a GPA of 3.00 or higher.
