Summer research opportunities
I'm sharing two summer opportunities that might be of interest to students in your network: the PREDOC x Opportunity Insights Summer Course in Big Data and the PRE Workshop. Taught in collaboration with Opportunity Insight, this Summer Course in Big Data will provide students with six weeks of instruction that will hone their coding skills and further their ability to utilize large data set to answer questions in the social sciences. The PRE Workshop allows students to learn more about and prepare for pre-doctoral opportunities. More information on both opportunities is below.
PREDOC x Opportunity Insights Summer Course in Big Data
This course will have two tracks, one for students who are considering a transition to the social sciences and want to learn more about a variety of fields in Economics, and one for students who are ready to engage in more advanced analysis and want to produce a capstone project. This tuition-free course begins July 5 and will run to August 12. Participants will receive a $2,000 stipend and STATA license as part of the course. Interested students should apply here by May 20. The course will give students an opportunity to:
· Develop their ability to pose and answer meaningful questions in the social sciences using a rigorous research methodology
· Gain experience with large, real-world data sets
· Prepare, present, and get feedback on a research project from discipline experts
· Sharpen their professional and communication skills through a series of weekly workshops
· Network with fellow students interested in a similar career
· Further understand the pathway to a career in research
PRE Workshop
The PRE Workshop will take place June 12 and 13, 2022 with all sessions occurring remotely. PREDOC hosts this annual conference for prospective pre-docs to learn more about and prepare for pre-doctoral opportunities. Current pre-docs, researchers, and students host panels that focus on applying for pre-doc roles, preparing to succeed as a pre-doc, and best practices in research. The conference is also an opportunity for students to participate in a coding exercise, where participants will work through a data task that resembles what one might see when applying to pre-docs. PREDOC is able to supply six-month STATA licenses to workshop participants who need them. Interested students can apply here. All applications are due by May 29, 2022 at 11:59 p.m.Additional questions can be sent to info@predoc.org.

Full-time research positions at the University of Chicago
I’m excited to announce the Winter 2022 hiring cycle for Research Professionals at the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics at the University of Chicago. We’re currently hiring full-time research assistants to start July 1, 2022, though other start dates will be considered. The program is intended to serve as a bridge between college and graduate school for students interested in empirical economics. These research assistants will work closely on faculty research, with faculty across all areas of economics hiring during this Winter hiring cycle. Available positions can be viewed at our website, and applications for the Winter cycle should be submitted by January 31, 2022. Please consider sharing with students across your network who may be interested in these opportunities.
Research Professionals and similar pre-doctoral positions at other universities are relatively new to the academic pipeline, but they are quickly becoming an integral part of the pipeline in the quantitative social sciences. Such positions are an excellent option for anyone considering a PhD program who is still uncertain, or as an alternative for anyone considering a master’s degree as a step toward a PhD. My name is Sarah Wheaton and I’m a Research Assistant at President Biden’s Council of Economic Advisers. As you may know, we are a team of economists who provide objective, empirical economic advice on the formulation of the President’s domestic and international economic policies.

2021 Virtual Diverse Economics Conference for undergraduate students - November 16-18 - Register Now!
The Richmond Fed is proud to host the 2021 virtual Diverse Economics Conference 11/16-18, in partnership with the undergraduate Women in Economics and the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond. The first two days will take place in the evenings (5-730 p.m. EST to better accommodate a student’s schedule).
They will
- Hear from seasoned professionals about their career path and experience Economics in Practice as economist share some of the cool projects they have worked on and its impact.
- Hear from early career professionals and see where they are today, utilizing their economics degree.
- Hear from Research Assistants about their roles working with economist and how it has impacted their next steps within their career journey.

Apply to the Duke University Pre-Graduate Fellows Program
The goal of the program is to help advanced undergraduates or recent college graduates with graduate applications to research-oriented Master's or Ph.D. programs in economics or a related field.
The program aims to increase diversity in economics by helping students who --- by their background, life experience and scholarship --- bring an underrepresented voice to the profession. We especially encourage applications from historically disadvantaged and underrepresented groups.
Selected applicants will:
- be named Duke Economics Pre-Graduate Fellows,
- receive a $1,500 financial award to assist with the costs of applying to graduate school
- have access to faculty mentoring designed to assist with graduate school preparation and applications
Duke faculty mentors include Bocar Ba, Arjada Bardhi, Jason Baron, Patrick Bayer, Charles Becker, David Berger, Marjorie McElroy, Modibo Sidibe, Juan Carlos Suarez Serrato, and Quitze Valenzuela-Stookey.
External faculty mentors will also include Marcus Casey, Associate Professor at University of Illinois-Chicago, and Erika Martinez, Senior Instructor at University of South Florida.
