November IS National Native American Heritage Month

<Tagline>Recognizing the culture and contributions of Indigenous folk</Tagline>

President George H.W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month”. Similar proclamations, under various names, have been issued each year since 1994. Long before that 1990 proclamation, Indigenous people of various backgrounds had struggled to get the history and culture of their people recognized and celebrated on a national sale.

Dr. Arthur C. Park, of Seneca descent, was the director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester, N.Y. He was an archaeologist, anthropologist, folklorist, and journalist among other designations who devoted a significant part of his life advocating for Native rights. He lived out these values by convincing the Boy Scouts of America to set aside a day for the “First Americans”. They adopted this day for three years.

On September 28, 1915, Rev. Sherman Coolidge, of Arapahoe descent and Congress of the American Indian Association president, called upon the country to observe the second Saturday of each May as American Indian Day. This proclamation also contained the first formal appeal for recognition of Indians as citizens.

Red Fox James, of Blackfoot descent, rode over 4,000 miles on horseback from state to state seeking approval for a day to honor Native Americans. On December 14, 1915, he presented the endorsements of 24 state governments to the White House. Unfortunately, there is no record of such a national day being proclaimed.

Over the years, several states have independently declared days in May or September to observe such a day. More recently, several states have designated Columbus Day as Native American Recognition Day, but it continues to be a day observed without any recognition as a national legal holiday.

Despite attempts to minimize and erase Indigenous voices, we must continue to raise awareness of the culture, history, and contributions of Indigenous people. Below are highlighted events happening on UMBC’s campus that you can attend in the spirit of education and celebration of this month.

Friday, November 8 | 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Mapping the Historic Lumbee Community in Baltimore

Wednesday, November 13 | 3:00pm - 4:30pm

Bagels & Banter Pop-Up #2: Indigenous Erasure and "National American History and Founders Month"

Wednesday, November 13 | 5:30pm - 7:30pm

Film Screening: The Thick Dark Fog

Monday, November 18 | 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Performing Relationships with Archived Objects

Thursday, December 5 | 4:00pm - 5:30pm

How to Be A Better Ally: Local Indigenous Communities

Check out the attached document for a list of events happening in Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

It's All Hallows' Eve! What sorts of “popular”
magic and witchcraft will you be participating in?

The terms “magic” and “witchcraft” have multiple meanings in popular usage, in scholarship generally, and even in anthropology. These behavioral and symbolic forms exist or have existed in virtually all human societies and cultures and often carry value laden connotations. For example, in the West, “magic” may denote occult practices that exist in a separate domain from everyday life and refer to an unseen world. In contrast, in indigenous societies, witchcraft, magic and sorcery may permeate life and interpersonal relations in distinctive ways. Understood as two components within the greater anthropological domain of religion, we will explore witchcraft and magic as aspects of the supernatural that shed light on the cultures that produce them, including how people thought about themselves and others, and how they reacted to changes in their society. Throughout, our goal will be, not to promote or debunk belief and practice, but rather to understand them using approaches from anthropology and history, seeing them in social and political contexts and considering their place in people's lives.

Roughly half the semester will be devoted to exploring magic and witchcraft cross-culturally with ethnographic readings from Western and non-Western societies. The other half of the semester will focus on practices of healing that are rooted in spirituality. We will consider how these practices reflect patterns of belief and overlap with magic and witchcraft more broadly.

The class will comprise of a combination of lecture, film, ethnographic literature, and assessments based on essays and exams. In anthropology, to understand a topic holistically, reading widely on the topic is required.

Dr. Dori

Today is the 2nd annual International Pronouns Day!

<Tagline>recognizing the dignity of another human being</Tagline>

The International Pronoun Day campaign encourages everyone of any gender to share their pronouns on social media as a way to celebrate and support the day.

Pronouns are terms we use to describe ourselves in the third person in place of our name. These can include:

• he/him/his

• she/her/hers

• they/them/theirs

• gender-neutral pronouns, such as ze/hir/hirs

Everyone has the right to be addressed by the name and pronouns that correspond to their gender identity. For many - though not all - people who are trans, a shift in pronouns is an affirming part of the transition process and can have positive health outcomes. It can help a trans person and the people in their lives start to see them as their affirmed gender. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns, otherwise known as misgendering, particularly affects trans & gender nonconforming people and can be devastating. Using the right pronouns is a critical step in acknowledging the humanity of trans and gender nonconforming individuals.

Sadly, anti-trans violence is on the rise and disproportionately affects trans women and femmes of color. It is our shared responsibility to make sure that the most vulnerable members of our communities are respected, supported and feel safe. Sharing your pronouns, regardless of your gender, normalizes the practice so it’s not just on transgender and non-binary people to do it. In solidarity, you can also add your pronouns to your email signature and social media profiles year-round. Sharing pronouns might seem like such a small thing to do if your pronouns align with the gender identity you were assigned at birth, but it can be life-changing to someone who constantly has to deal with being misgendered.

Respecting people’s pronouns is an important part of making UMBC a safer, more inclusive and supportive community. International Pronouns Day seeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace. It’s really just about recognizing the dignity of another human being.

For more information or to pick up your own pronoun buttons come visit us at The Mosaic or join us later today for Bagels and Banter Pop-Up #1.

For more information on Mosaic LGBTQA+ centered events, please email Heidy George, Program Associate for Student Diversity and Inclusion at hmg@umbc.edu, or mosaic@umbc.edu.
