We have watched with grave concern as children have been forcibly separated from their parents at the southern border as part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s new “zero tolerance” immigration policy. In the past six weeks, officials have removed thousands of children from their parents and sent them to shelters as their parents (including many asylum seekers) await potential prosecution for illegal entry.

We join educators across the nation in strongly condemning this new policy and the resulting separation of families. The American Psychological Association, citing empirical evidence, has voiced strong concern that forced family separation can lead to emotional trauma in children and can threaten their mental and physical health. The National Association of Social Workers calls the policy “harmful” and “unconscionable,” and writes that it “directly imperils the health and safety of immigrants.”

As we have said before, UMBC is and always will be a community that values inclusion, diversity, and respect for all people. We must affirm these values through both our words and our actions.

We urge the Department of Justice to reverse this policy immediately, and all government agencies involved to work toward reuniting families as quickly as possible.

Please join us in commemorating June 19th, the day the last slaves in America were freed. This occurred in Galveston, Texas in 1865, or two and a half years after former President Lincoln's executive order, the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863. 

Juneteenth was named by former slaves and celebrated a year after freedom and equality per the Emancipation Proclamation was enforced by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger and Union soldiers. 

Today, at least 45 states and the District of Columbia celebrate Juneteenth after 2014 when former President Obama proclaimed today as a National Day of Observance.

The Maryland Department of Human Services (DHS), the State of Maryland's social services agency, is looking for people interested joining them in their mission to pursue opportunities to assist people in economic need, provide prevention services, and protect vulnerable children and adults.

They have several introductory level job classifications for which we are currently conducting statewide recruitments and accepting applications, including the Family Services Caseworker Trainee (work providing direct social services to troubled individuals or families in Maryland and requires no experience, just a bachelor’s degree with a major in an appropriate behavioral science such as Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Family Studies, etc. to apply), Family Investment Specialist I (work assisting State residents in determining the State assistance programs for which they qualify), Child Support Specialist Trainee and Child Support Specialist I (work involving investigating and analyzing child support cases and initiating appropriate actions to establish, maintain and enforce support payments for dependent children).

These recruitments will remain open through July 2, 2018, allowing everyone, including students nearing graduation with their bachelor's degrees, ample time to submit an application. (Anyone, including students within six months of graduating with an appropriate bachelor's degree towards meeting minimum qualifications may apply.) The resulting lists of eligible candidates will be used to fill vacancies in our Local Departments of Social Services and regional Offices of Child Support Enforcement throughout the state.

We can not believe that we are at the end of another academic year!  Good luck to all on your finals and best wishes to our May graduates.  We hope you have an incredible summer!

Please note that our hours will be changing starting the day after Study Day (Thursday, May 17, 2018). 

The Mosaic lounge space will continue to be available to students, staff, faculty and their visitors on a "first come, first seated" basis.  Free coffee, tea, cold beverages and periodic snacks will be available during this time. We're trying to be more sustainable!  Please bring your own travel mug or cup with you. Our Interfaith Center will continue to serve as a meeting place for prayer or to socialize and our Queer Student Lounge will remain closed. Our spaces are NON-RESERVABLE over finals week and summer session hours. 

Spring Semester Finals Week for our spaces are effective Thursday, May 17 - Friday, May 25

Mosaic: 10AM-5PM

Interfaith Center (IFC) (located in the Student Development and Success Center, Center Rd): Regular Operating Hours

Queer Student Lounge (QSL): Regular Operating Hours (May 17- May 23) Closed (May 24-25)

Summer Break/Term hours for our spaces are from Tuesday, May 29 - Tuesday, August 28 and are as follows:

Mosaic: 10AM-2PM
*Please note that the Mosaic will be closed May 26- June 3.

IFC: 8AM-8PM

QSL: Closed

Important FYIs:
We will have limited staffing again this summer. Therefore, The Mosaic will be closed periodically throughout the summer to accommodate holidays, staff meetings, leave schedules and student staff training dates.  

Lisa Gray, Associate Director for Diversity and Inclusion and Carlos Turcios, Coordinator for Diversity and Inclusion will be available to meet with community members 9:30am-5:30pm, Monday - Friday.
