    <div class="html-content"><h4><strong>National Native American/American Indian Heritage Month: </strong></h4><div><strong>November</strong></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span> </span><span>The term "American Indian" incorporates hundreds of different tribes and approximately 250 languages. Starting in 1976 as Native American Awareness Week, the period was expanded by Congress and approved by President George H. W. Bush in August 1990 by designating the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month. In his proclamation for 1996, President William J. Clinton noted, "Throughout our history, American Indian and Alaska Native peoples have been an integral part of the American character. Against all odds, America's first peoples have endured, and they remain a vital cultural, political, social, and moral presence." You know, the part where men and women often get paid differently for doing the same job? The gap is even bigger for people of color and people with disabilities.     <div class="html-content"><h2>Second Generation Scholarship Form DEADLINE: Oct 17,2014</h2><h4>Second Generation Scholarship Form</h4><hr><div><div><h3>Statement of Purpose</h3><p>The purpose of the Second Generation Scholarship Award is to provide support to outstanding UMBC undergraduates who have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of minorities. The amount of the scholarship varies from year to year.</p><p>For the 2014-2015 academic year, two $1,000 scholarship will be given. The recipients will be notified in early November and the awards will be formally presented at the W.E.B. Dubois Lecture on November 12, 2014. <strong>Attendance at the lecture is mandatory</strong>. </p><h3>Criteria</h3><p>The student selected to receive this award should:</p><ul><li>Be a full-time, undergraduate, degree-seeking student in good standing at UMBC.</li><li>Have a minimum 2.75 GPA.</li><li>Submit two letters of recommendation, one of which should be from a UMBC faculty from whom the applicant has taken a course.</li><li>Have completed or enrolled in an Africana Studies Course.</li><li>Submit a transcript (unofficial transcripts are accepted).</li><li>Demonstrate a commitment to the advancement of minorities that is reflected by a pattern of service to the community, extracurricular activities, or other community involvement.</li></ul><p>* Please note that your application will be given to the scholarship selection committee just as you have submitted it.  It will not be edited and spelling errors will not be corrected.*  </p><p><strong>See website for application form and details.  </strong></p><p><strong>APPLICATION DEADLINE:</strong><strong>October 17, 2014</strong></p></div></div></div>

We provide the</span><br><span>training to get a certificate in being a diversity presenter. As our schools</span><br><span>and society become increasingly diverse, many of us need to increase our</span><br><span>cultural competencies-the skills and awareness related to communication and</span><br><span>interaction across all social identities. Let us show you how! For students</span><br><span>there is a two part training with part 1 Friday, October 24, 2014 from 2-5 pm</span><br><span>or Saturday, October 25 from 9-12.The second part is Saturday, October 25 from</span><br><span>1- 4. PROMISE is one of the co-sponsors for this event that will take place next <span><span>Saturday, September 20</span></span>. </div><div><br></div><div>See the link to registration can be found </div><div><br></div><div>In partnership with the Meyerhoff Scholars Program, UMBC will sponsor a bus to the event for all registered undergraduate students from any school in the region. Graduate student mentors, postdocs, staff, and faculty are also welcome to take the bus that will make a round trip between UMBC's campus and College Park. All riders should plan to come to UMBC to ride the bus to and from College Park. These are not intended to be open discussions or debates. This year we want to hear from the people who know colleges best. Students, faculty and alumni are invited to share photos, fun facts, traditions and quirks that truly happen <em>only at </em>their school for a chance to be featured in FORBES magazine and online as a 'Students’ Favorite Top College.'"<br><br></div><div>Here's an example offered by Forbes: "The Mesa is the place to be.
