Presidential Proclamation Irish-American Heritage Month, 2014

Every year the President of the United States of America creates presidential proclamation to officially announce March as Irish-American Heritage Month. In the proclamation the President calls upon Americans to "observe this month with appropriate ceremonies, activities and programs." On February 28, 2014, President Barack Obama released the presidential proclamation for Irish-American Month, 2014. In it, he touched on the shared heritage and ideals of Ireland and America shown through the "many threads of green woven into red, white and blue." Irish-American Heritage month coincides with the well-known Irish national holiday, St. Patrick's Day, which is on March 17.

The images featured are studio portraits, glamour shots, press photographs, advertising images and amateur snapshots paired with short, informative biographies of some of twentieth-century America's most famous and influential women. 

The website has an introduction that begins with, "Of all the landmark changes in twentieth-century America, one of the most significant was the changing role of women and their growing importance in all branches of endeavor." In 1975, the United Nations began sponsoring International Women's Day to honor women everywhere but they deserved recognition before 1975. Women were devoted to the cause of labor, being part of the Revolution in the early 1900's and organizing against militarism and war and many other things.  

In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month and March was declared Women's History Month. "As one such example followed another in ever quicker succession, the broadening range of opportunity for women has become an irreversible fact of American life and a reflection of women's achievement."

"In July of 2009, the Delhi High Court "read down" Section 377, the 153-year old sodomy laws instituted by the British, making sex between two consenting adults, regardless of their gender, legal. This was a monumental victory for the LGBTQH (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Hijra) communities in India, and their struggle for equal rights. Indians living abroad like myself, who have been working to promote visibility and acceptance of sexual minorities in South Asian communities in diaspora, welcomed and cheered the news. We felt an incredible sense of pride in our nation, and its judicial system that privileged human dignity and equal rights over political campaigns based on religious bigotry, intolerance, policing public morality and using fear to drum up support. Now the nation's highest court is trying to make us into criminals -- again..."

As described in this article, the term "microaggression" refers to specific interactions between people of different races, cultures, or genders that, while not physically violent, are nonetheless aggressive and demeaning.  They can present themselves in the form of both verbal and nonverbal exchanges, and are frequently not recognized as offensive in casual conversation.  Despite the apparent innocence or good intentions of some of these questions/comments, it is important to recognize the implications of what you say to people and the effects your words can have (even if unintended).

Following the Indian Removal Act of 1830, forced relocation of Native Americans was imposed on tribes residing in the southeastern portion of the United States to the West; an act that amounted to the ethnic cleansing of the native peoples of this land.  The Seminole tribe was known for its resistance to this movement. This story from NPR chronicles the bravery of Polly Parker, a Seminole Indian who organized and executed an escape from federal troops over 150 years ago.
