Capture and Caption: Captioning Tools Available for UMBC Use
This webinar will provide an overview of the options that UMBC users have to caption video content. Captioning is now a legal requirement for public universities as Section 504 and Title II of the American with Disabilities Act require captioned video content. In general, however, all students benefit from the availability of captioned content which increases accessibility and increases student retention and comprehension.
This session will provide an overview of common accessibility accommodation needs that require a live or recorded transcript or captions. Then available captioning tools available for UMBC faculty will be demonstrated These include how automatic captions are accessed in UMBC’s screen capture and video hosting platforms Panopto and Voicethread as well as captioning options for live sessions on Blackboard Collaborate and Webex. In addition, the session will review captioning options using Google Slides and PowerPoint. Finally the session will review the procedures for submitting RT requests for specialized transcription needs.
This session will be facilitated by Dr. Peter Ariev, Instructional Design Specialist, and Josh Abrams, Instructional Design Specialist. Michael Canale, Assistant Director in the Office of Student Disability Services.
