Or perhaps been diagnosed with an eye condition such as macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy? If the answer is yes, you’re not alone: vision problems affect 25 million Americans, and are on the rise.

To support this growing community, the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) and Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight Foundation have launched VisionAware.org<http://www.VisionAware.org”>, a free, easy-to-use informational website for adults with vision loss, their families, caregivers, healthcare providers, and social service professionals.

The new VisionAware combines two stand-alone resources from AFB and Partners for Sight (Senior Site and the former VisionAware, respectively) into a single, comprehensive website offering dynamic social networking and customized guidance for adults of all ages with rich content and practical tips on living with vision loss.

“Of the services available today that help people newly diagnosed with vision loss, we anticipate that VisionAware will be a superlative resource for finding help and support on living fully and independently,” said Carl R. Augusto, AFB president and CEO. “By combining our efforts with the Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight Foundation, we can better serve the millions of adults coping with vision loss.”

“This partnership will strengthen our goal of serving adults who are losing their sight,” said Susan Olivo, Executive Director, Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight Foundation. “For this growing community, it’s paramount for them to know that help is available.”

She's a contestant — who’s blind — on MasterChef, the FOX Network Primetime reality television cooking competition starring Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich, and Graham Elliot. These star chefs and food critic judge aspiring cooks from around the country on their culinary skills. Christine is a University of Houston graduate student and a food blogger who shows off her skills in many ways.

"You have an excellent palate!" said Chef Gordon Ramsay about Christine Ha. Ms. Ha is coming straight from MasterChef to answering some questions for AFB CareerConnect about her life and experiences on the popular television show. New ADA Rules Leave Some Scrambling

As a new round of accessibility requirements take effect this week, some businesses are struggling to comply.

The new regulations are part of a 2010 update to the Americans with Disabilities Act. Businesses were given until this year to adhere to many of the added requirements.

Starting Thursday, rules will be in place for the first time ever mandating that public swimming pools, parks, golf courses, exercise clubs and other recreational facilities be accessible. Hotel reservation systems also must meet new standards.

However, some businesses appear to be having difficulty meeting the requirements in time. USA Today reports that a number of hotels are considering closing their swimming pools and whirlpools because they don’t yet include lifts.

In response a hospitality industry trade group — the American Hotel & Lodging Association — has asked the Justice Department to delay implementation of the new rules arguing that they are vague, but federal officials have not budged thus far.

In addition to the new regulations regarding recreational facilities, the ADA update also included changes to building requirements, new standards for wheelchairs and clarified what qualifies as a service animal. Many of these rules took effect last year.

The updates mark the first major overhaul of the ADA since it was enacted more than two decades ago.
