Sustainability in Collegiate Athletics Online Community

This new online community is geared toward those who want to collaborate and share resources around sustainability in athletics. The community provides an outlet for dialogue and collaboration with others who have faced challenges in similar capacities. The community is open for anyone to join, although an AASHE account is required.


All UMBC community members have FREE access to AASHE and can create an account with their UMBC email.

When & Where

Starting Friday, September 9 old sneakers can be dropped off in the Equipment Room (114) at the Cheaspeake Employer's Insurance Areana ( formerly the UMBC Events Center). 

Acceptable shoes include:

Athletic sneakers
Cleats (rubber bottoms ONLY)
Basketball shoes
Sneakers of any variety


Why is this a thing?

Most people throw away their used sneakers every 125-200 days without ever thinking about recycling. Since sneakers are manufactured with materials that are not biodegradable, they remain in landfills or are incinerated, which leads to toxic chemicals in our air and soil.

The process of manufacturing sneakers produces large amounts of CO2 which contributes to the serious effects of climate change and global warming. Recycling and reusing sneakers keeps sneakers out of landfills, reduces the need for manufacturing new shoes and sneakers, and supports a growing circular economy.

What happens to them?

All reusable sneakers are recirculated to secondhand markets so people can access quality, pre-owned footwear at affordable prices. All heavily used and damaged footwear is disassembled and recycled to maximize material reuse.

Every year, UMBC competes in RecycleMania from February through April!

"Game Day: Basketball" is a new series of special categories for the 2013 competition which will compare schools based on recycling and waste minimization efforts made 
during a single home basketball game during the February and March timeframe of RecycleMania.

If you are a fan or athlete, consider this leadership opportunity to get involved with outreach, with the support and assistance from the friendly team of recycling and event planning staff! This would be a great opportunity to have a major positive impact on campus, while having fun (plus developing your skills and connections)!
