SWEet Summer 2016 Presents: Varapapa Thodpanich Varapapa Thodpanich, Chemical Engineering '17: is working in Dr. Ghosh's lab evaluating quality of the sediment and fish. She finds how much PCB, PAHs and/or PE by extracting it from the fish and sediment, and running the samples in gas chromatography chamber. For her upcoming project, she will have to do material balances on seven tributaries that is in the Anacostia river to determine how much PCB, PAHs, and PE are in the river and to improve quality of the water. Her favorite part of the research lab is the people around her and being able to apply my wet chemistry techniques that she has learned in labs. She also gets to travel to different lakes and rivers around Maryland to collect the fish and water samples.

Do you want to make a difference and impact the community? Being a REACH mentor is a great opportunity to do so. The program runs during the academic year (Fall/Spring).

Other ways to get involved that don't involve as much of a weekly commitment are based on joining one of the committees of organizers that basically create the curriculum. These committees might meet once every couple of weeks. They are: 

STEM Committee-- Helping to plan workshops that expose students to various STEM fields. Example: Last year, they took the students to the Physics building observatory to expose them to Astronomy. Also, evaluating students' project proposals in the Spring Semester (a large portion of the program is introducing the students to research). Contact: Robyn Jasper <rjasper1@umbc.edu>

Gender Empowerment Committee-- Helping to plan workshops focused on issues like mental health, communication, relationships, public speaking, and more. Contact: Nitya Kumaran <nkumar4@umbc.edu>

Research Committee-- Assisting in evaluating the statistical success of a program like this by looking at last year's results, comparing them to the results of other similar programs, and drawing conclusions.

There is some fantastic opportunity, especially for our MechE's, from our assistant director, Lori Hardesty. The application closes tomorrow so apply today!! Below is the detailed information regarding it:

"I hope this email finds you all well!  I realize that schools have let out for the summer, but wanted to share this great experience with you in the event that you know of some viable participants.

I just heard from folks administering the The Future Engineers in Dynamics Systems (FEDS) Program (cc'ed" to this email).  There are still openings for this program, which begins in a few weeks.  

FEDS is a great opportunity for rising high school juniors and seniors interested in mechanical engineering to participate in a FREE two-week program in partnership with UMBC's Department of Mechanical Engineering.  FEDS participants explore dynamics, vibrations, acoustics, and system control.  There may also be an opportunity for a teacher or two to participate.

The program runs from July 13th-July 26th, Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm. I attached the brochure, as well as applications for both students and teachers.  The deadline to apply is Friday, June 24th, but I am not sure many applications have been received.

The application is pretty basic and not too difficult to complete.  In past years, I sat in on various activities and observed great learning and teamwork.  For more information, you can contact Dr. Weidong Zhu at wzhu@umbc.edu or via phone at (410) 455-3394.  Submit your completed applications to Dr. Zhu as directed on the application form."

We were able to see the manufacturing site of how ice creams are made in a large-scale and the different quality that are taken into considerations.

We also had an ice cream tasting of the fresh batches that were just made and take them home! Some of the ice creams included in the Häagen-Dazs, Drumstick cones, and more.
